Sessão da Tarde is a Brazilian television program on TV Globo that shows movies on Monday through Friday afternoons since March 4, 1974, it is one of the most enduring film sessions on Brazilian television, replacing the extinct Sessão das Duas. As it is aired every day of the week, the session is less likely to not be aired by sports competitions such as football and volleyball and other events. But a few times by year its airing is replaced by other events, whether sports or journalistic or by double chapters of Vale a Pena Ver de Novo.
Por Que Vive as Altas Aventuras dos Filmes nas Tardes da Globo (Why It Lives the High Adventures of the Movies in the Afternoons of Globo)
- It's one of the long-running television film sessions on Brazilian television and also in the history of Globo for 50 years, mainly is a program that is aired in the afternoon, which lives up to the name of the program.
- The program airs films from well-known studios such as Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., Disney, 20th Century Studios, Sony (Columbia Pictures/TriStar Pictures), Universal Pictures and as well from other countries like the country where the program is aired, Brazil, either live-action or animated. The majority of the films they aired became classics by the generations who watched the program for many years, most notably in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s.
- It also aired two programs of Globo Repórter as a tribute to the late Glória Maria on February 3, 2023, when unfortunately, she passed away a day before.
- One of the known characteristics of the program what makes the program good before its current phase since 2013, it was the use of phrases that described the films in the promos for the films that would be shown on the program in the 2000s, such as "a bunch of tough guys get ready in high confusions/high adventures", "make things that God doubt" and "dark weather", that these phrases are said by Globo voice-overs such as Carlos Duarte, David Roque and Dirceu Rabelo, where they record most of the promos.
- Great openings, such as the 1981-1989 where the program's iconic theme song was first used and also for featuring photos of famous Hollywood actresses and actors like Woody Allen, 1990-2004 and 2004-2013 with the classic rainbow logo of the program was used for 23 years, although they were slightly altered in 2000 to the former and in 2005 to the latter, and even the current opening used since 2013, except the choir part of the current opening. (see BQ#2)
- In July through early August 2021, the program aired classic films on Thursdays that marked generations for those who have watched these films for years on Sessão da Tarde, such as Matilda, The Goonies, The Karate Kid Part II, Gremlins and Space Jam (the latter to promote the Brazilian release of Space Jam: A New Legacy and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics), although it was short lived due to Sessão de Sábado definitely returning in September, would handle the airing of classic films on Globo instead.
Qualidades Negativas Que Causam Sérias Altas Confusões (Bad Qualities That Cause Serious High Confusions)
- In recent years, the program has been showing many modern romance and drama movies, which led to a lot of criticism of long-time viewers who had followed and watched the program for years. To be fair, it was due to the change in the indicative classification on Brazilian TV in 2016, which caused some reclassifications of some films that were shown in the session and the inclusion of films for those aged 12 and 14 in the session as well.
- The chorus of the current opening shown since 2013 is very annoying since they are just singing "Nananana" and especially ruins the instrumental and even the current opening itself.
- They repeat some movies, even with the difference of a few months, but according to the blog Pipoqueira there's a historical explanation of why they repeat some movies on the program. With the explosion in the sale of VCRs in the early 1990s, the home video market experienced its peak in the following years and helped the Brazilian viewer to know the bulk of Hollywood's production cling to the stars and make productions like Home Alone, Pretty Woman and Ghost as great blockbusters. Therefore, every TV airing, even after of numerous reruns, it has satisfying ratings. Due to the number of movies that were rerun a lot on the program, down below this page's list of the movies with the most airings on Sessão da Tarde.
