"Shrek: Fairy Tale Freakdown" is an episode of the Angry Video Game Nerd web series, it was uploaded to YouTube on March 15, 2021.

YouTube Description

The Nerd just wants to watch Shrek... but he ends up reviewing one of the worst fighting games on the Game Boy Color based on Shrek... until he's eventually captured by some creepy Shrek cultists. There's a lot going on. Shrek is love, Shrek is life after all.

Why It Should Get Out Of The Swamp

  1. The Nerd spends way too much time talking about the movie Shrek and trying to get it on his Game Boy Advance rather than actually reviewing the game.
  2. The episode is 15 minutes long, yet the actual review starts at minute 7, and only lasts 2 minutes.
  3. There are very unfunny jokes, such as:
    • The Nerd roaring and getting close to the screen.
    • The Nerd doing dirty jokes about the opponents of the game.
    • "That ass looks like ass!"
    • "Playtime is ogre. (over)"
      • In addition, this joke is done twice.
  4. At one point, a guy appears with a Shrek costume. Said costume looks absolutely ridiculous and he has a weird deep voice that doesn't sound anything like Shrek.
  5. The Nerd passes out because he got an onion thrown to him, which is just non-sensical.
  6. In the next scene, the guy with a Shrek costume has kidnapped The Nerd and strapped him to a chair, but he doesn't do anything, just gets close, trips over an onion and dies (?), a lot of buildup for nothing.
  7. Plot hole: the nerd gets out of the chair by just taking out the rope, wouldn't be easier to do that since the beginning?
  8. The Nerd then tries to go to a ceremony, disguised as the guy in the Shrek costume. In the ceremony, everyone in a so-called fairy tale cult wears stupid looking costumes.
  9. In said ceremony, the cult members beat up The Nerd just because he doesn't dance well, and the Nerd doesn’t even try to fight back against them.
  10. At the end, the cult sacrifices The Nerd by burning him to death in a wooden ogre statue just because he doesn't like Shrek.
  11. What does Shrek have to do with ceremonies and sacrifices anyway? If anything it feels more like a poor man’s parody of The Wicker Man.
  12. The episode also feels like it was made to associate with many of the memes about Shrek and to pander to the massive online fandom around the series. But even in attempting that, it fails miserably.

Qualities That Have Layers

  1. There is still some jokes that are funny, such as:
    • The Nerd confusing Toy Story with Shrek and singing “You Got a Friend In Me”.
    • "I'm gonna squash your head like a grape, motherfucker!"
  2. The editing is good, like most other AVGN episodes.
  3. At least the game being reviewed is bad. Click for this page.
