Slide Whistle Stooges is an episode of the sixth season of SpongeBob SquarePants.

Plot

SpongeBob and Patrick enjoy their slide whistles, but the sounds annoy Squidward. Actually, Squidward will enjoy too to the whistle, but his antics soon unleash a serious revolt.

Why It Swallows the Whistle and Chokes

  1. Like the most of the episodes of these seasons, this is a generic Squidward torture episode.
  2. This episode heavily abuses obnoxious slide whistle sound effects, which can easily get on your nerves and turn off the TV. The main characters never stop playing them, so much so that there are not even 5 minutes of silence in the episode.
  3. There are various problems with the characters:
    • SpongeBob and Patrick are dreadful, and in this episode, they constantly play with their slide whistles to annoy Squidward to get him to play without stopping. They are also very stupid, because they don't realize Squidward's attitude and even though he told them to stop, they continue and throughout the episode they act like stalkers.
    • It's impossible to sympathize with Squidward even though it should be one of his torture episode because he eventually joins up with SpongeBob and Patrick, only to become a selfish and self-righteous neighbor who does nothing but torture innocent people literally for no reason, to the point of being able to be easily the antagonist of the episode.
      • This is also very out of character for Squidward as he’s shown to be intelligent and mature in other episodes.
    • Bikini Bottomies can be sympathetic, but this does not mean that they are extremely hypocritical, because they declare revenge to Squidward, despite the main problem being the slide whistles, so they do not also threaten Patrick and SpongeBob, who should be the cause of Squidward's bad habit. This becomes more glaring when Squidward, while he drives a truck, falls in a pit and both SpongeBob and Patrick play a funeral tune with the slide whistles, in that moment, everybody cheered (except Spongebob and Patrick).
      • Instead of calling out Squidward for his actions, they want to kill him, showing a rather dark side of the people of Bikini Bottom.
  4. Simply unlistenable soundtrack, no reason to say why. Maybe except the theme of the episode without the slide whistles.
  5. Indeed, seeing Squidward suffer from the duo and then unite and become the antagonist of the aforementioned episode shows how hypocritical the show can be. By the way, Squidward himself has the problem of being oblivious to the risk he takes every time he annoys people, only to finally realize the damage he has done.
  6. The humor is not funny at all in this episode, not only because it is repetitive, but also because it practically does not exist any other form of fun that is not annoying whistles and Squidward turning into a lady’s baby was creepy. They managed to make a disrespectful joke at the end of the episode (See WIS#9)
  7. It's a rip-off of "The Paper" of the first season and "Pranks a Lot" of the third which are much better than this episode, all without any of the charm and cleverness of both SpongeBob episodes.
  8. The infamous scene where SpongeBob and Patrick are running towards Squidward, whichever is enough to give you the last nerve.
  9. Horrific ending:
    • While the final scene, where everyone plays slide whistles, it should be hilarious and comical, bad it feels not only stupid and irritating; but also a big kick in the balls; since they keep playing the whistles and harassing everyone in the hospital, except Squidward, but they make everyone happy.
    • Seeing Squidward with his slide whistle stuck in his throat and only capable of making squeaky sounds is disturbing, especially on a children's show.
    • Also, SpongeBob and Patrick insult the sick and people probably dying by harassing everyone with whistles and it’s also disrespectful to play whistles in a hospital as they were sick or some were about to be killed, and the people (ex. Squidward) have no problem with them insulting sick and almost died people.
    • And top it off, SpongeBob and Patrick never punished for their actions.
  10. Bad moral: This episode teaches that torturing or annoying a person can be hilarious for both you and her, when in reality it could get you in serious troubles.
    • Moreover, this episode had the opportunity to teach the problem of the addiction, a very useful topic especially among gamers and smokers, since the protagonists continue to play the whistles non-stop as if they were their drug, which would have led to the two to face Squidward and the rest of the people who hate their behavior, but instead, the writers chose the wrong path and did this.
  11. This episode tries to be a parody and love letter to The Three Stooges, but instead turns out to be very offensive to the original trio.
  12. A fish can be heard saying "assault your own baby!" to Squidward, which could count as child cruelty.
  13. The logic is pretty stupid because when Squidward played with the whistle, it’s wrong, but when SpongeBob and Patrick do it, it’s cool.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Squidward at least gets his punishment in the end of the episode.
  2. Voice acting and animation are still good.
  3. There is a slightly funny scene in which Squidward with the truck destroys the Chum Bucket, which leads Mr. Krabs to cheer, only for the first to destroys the Krusty Krab.
  4. Mr. Krabs is the only likable character in this episode.
    • The Bikini Bottomies can be sympathetic, despite having a dark side.
  5. The plot had potential but if it was just a 5 minute short instead of a long episode.
  6. The main production music (Slide Whistle Stooges No Whistle) of the episode sounds good without whistles.
    • It was later used in later episodes.

Reception

This episode, like the previous episode, received overwhelmingly negative reviews by critics and fans. It has a 4.1 on IMDb.

Trivia

  • This is the first episode where "Slide Whistle Stooges" and "Slide Whistle Stooges 2" play. Their titles are based on this episode.
    • This is also the first episode where "12th St Rag" with bass plays.
  • Only three production tracks are played due to the heavy usage of "Slide Whistle Stooges" and other original music playing throughout.
