Sonic.EXE (2011 Creepypasta)
Genre: Horror
Written by: JC the Hyena
Release date: August 2011
Sequel: Sonic.exe/Round 2

Sonic.EXE is a creepypasta story about a demonic version of Sonic the Hedgehog who tortures and kills the characters within a cursed video game, ultimately breaking the fourth wall to threaten the player.

Why It's Not God

  1. Overused Plot Device: The story uses the clichéd concept of a cursed or haunted video game, which has been done many times in other creepypastas.
  2. The plot follows a predictable pattern where the protagonist ignores warnings and ends up facing dire consequences, making it less engaging.
  3. The characters, including the protagonist and "Kyle," lack depth and development, making it hard for readers to care about them.
  4. The writing quality fluctuates, with some parts feeling amateurish and poorly edited.
  5. The protagonist’s reactions to horrifying events are often unrealistic and lack genuine fear or urgency.
  6. The story relies heavily on detailed descriptions of gore and violence, which can come across as gratuitous and sensationalist.
  7. The creepypasta lacks subtlety, with horror elements being overly explicit rather than building a sense of dread.
  8. The depiction of Sonic as a demonic entity with hyper-realistic features is a tired trope in horror fiction.
  9. Some plot points, like the CD being impossible to remove from the computer, strain believability and detract from the story.
  10. The story often repeats information, such as the protagonist’s love for Sonic games, which feels redundant and unnecessary.
  11. The pacing is uneven, with some sections dragging on while others rush through critical moments.
  12. Attempts to break the fourth wall, such as characters looking at the player, feel forced and lack the intended impact.
  13. The antagonist’s motivations are not well-explained, making the horror feel random and less impactful.
  14. The dialogue, especially in the letter from Kyle, feels unnatural and unconvincing.
  15. The title character can make people think that ".exe" is some diabolical iconography, while it's just the file type for Windows executables. The writer could choose an non-existent file prefix and this damage wouldn't even be done, and we wouldn't be even complaining about this!
  16. Overall, the story feels derivative, borrowing heavily from existing horror tropes without adding anything new or innovative.

The Only Redeeming Quality

  1. The idea of a corrupted video game that becomes dangerous in real life is an interesting concept that can be engaging for readers who enjoy horror and supernatural themes.
