Sonic Jam is a video game compilation developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega. It was famously known for allowing American and European Sonic fans to access many Japanese content from the Sonic series and contains ports of the first 4 Sonic games and their Lock-On versions. It was released for the Sega Saturn in June 20, 1997 in Japan, July 31, 1997 in North America, and August 28, 1997 in Europe.

Why It's Your Jam

  1. It consists of 3 (4 if you count Sonic & Knuckles as its own game) awesome Sonic games that can keep you occupied for a while.
  2. It has a large amount of content for many American and European Sonic fans back in the 90s and even content where most of the time usually can be found by importing the Japanese versions and watching TV in Japan for the commercials if you're lucky to see them early back then.
    • You can watch the original Japanese Sonic CD opening, endings, and commercials.
    • You can watch a short anime of Sonic though it's more American styled and also a PV for the OVA movie.
    • You can view the art gallery and listen to the OST of the games and the collection.
    • You can also view the info of the important characters of the franchise.
  3. The games are not emulated instead they're ports with different codes and are also given 3 difficulty options which either makes the levels easier or harder and have a save feature.
    • It also has an "original" difficulty mode if you prefer playing the original versions of the games.
  4. You can play the special stages anytime without having to access any of the games and they can be good to practice them to achieve the good endings and Super Sonic (2, 3 and Knuckles only as 1 didn't have Super Sonic) easier.
  5. You can even view the Japanese manuals though it does require a lot of Japanese still the Japanese manuals have more detailed info and longer than the English manuals.
  6. Sonic World is very fun to explore and is close you can get to a 3D platform Sonic game on the Sega Saturn even though you'll only be allowed to do small challenges and view extra content.
  7. The collection's own music is very catchy and fun to listen to which gives that adventure and cool feel for the Sonic franchise.
  8. Well-done intro sequence which first shows a logo of Sonic Team forming and then shows Sonic running in a desert, jumping and does his usual title logo pose with a Japanese accent saying the collection's title.

Bad Qualities

  1. In Sonic World you can't fight enemies nor bosses and you can't even use spin dash which you can only view content and do some challenges such as getting rings.
  2. Some frame rate issues, graphical issues and sound issues if too many sound effects are going on at once and there's a bug that if the game crashes in debug mode, the entire CD will freeze.
  3. The Game.com port is horrendously bad.

Trivia

  • The Sonic World portion is a leftover beta version of Sonic Adventure which would be released for the Dreamcast in 1998 in Japan and 1999 internationally.
  • Scott The Woz owns this game, and it's the rarest of his collection.
