Ported over from the Awful Movies Wiki

Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. (commonly known as Sony Pictures or SPE, and formerly known as Columbia Pictures Entertainment, Inc.) is an American diversified

multinational mass media and entertainment studio conglomerate that produces, acquires, and distributes filmed entertainment (theatrical motion pictures, television programs, and recorded videos) through multiple platforms. Through an intermediate holding company called Sony Film Holding Inc., it is operated as a subsidiary of Sony Entertainment Inc., which is itself a subsidiary of the multinational technology and media conglomerate Sony Group Corporation. Based at the Sony Pictures Studios lot in Culver City, California as one of the "Big Five" major American film studios, it encompasses Sony's motion picture, television production and distribution units. Its sales in the fiscal year 2020 (April 2020 – March 2021) was reported to be $7.16 billion.

Surprisingly, from 2010 to 2018, there were somewhat infamous for making way too movies at the same time. In other words, they were somewhat notorious for quantity over quality.

Bad Qualities

  1. They were somewhat notorious for quantity over quality back in the early to mid 2010s. For example, they were developing 11 Spider-Man movies at the same time, and at that same time, they decided to make a cinematic universe about Robin Hood, with a Friar Tuck movie and so on.
  2. They released a lot of bad and average films around that time such as:
    1. The live-action Smurfs movies
    2. Open Season: Scared Silly
    3. Surf's Up 2: WaveMania
    4. Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2
    5. The Star
    6. Jack and Jill
    7. Just Go with It
    8. That's My Boy
    9. Annie (2014)
    10. The Emoji Movie (the most infamous)
    11. Ghostbusters (2016)
    12. The Amazing Spider-Man 2
  3. Aside from The Emoji Movie, they're responsible for Sony Pictures Animation's downfall, especially from December of 2015, to the first half of 2018, since not only they released some bad films around that time (especially 2017 which is considered to be by many Sony Pictures Animation fans to be the worst year for the studio since not only they pulled out two other bad films, Surf's Up 2: WaveMania, and The Star, but also the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs TV series which was completely unnecessary since Sony hasn't even announce a third Cloudy film, with Smurfs: the Lost Village being the only good film from Sony Pictures Animation that year), but also due to the period of rampant studio mismanagement SPA suffered from at the time of their downfall. Thankfully Sony Pictures Animation managed to redeem itself with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, completely ending its dark age altogether.
  4. Back then, and during this era, they partnered with Happy Madison Productions, a company known for infamously producing abysmal films from Adam Sandler, to create awful films such as The Animal, Eight Crazy Nights, Grown Ups, and it's sequel, "Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star", Jack & Jill, Just Go With It, "Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2", Pixels, and That's My Boy, in fact, all of which, were heavily maligned with Jack & Jill and That's My Boy being considered to be two of the worst movies ever made.
  5. Let's not forget the infamous 2014 Sony Pictures Entertainment hack, more information here.

Good Qualities

  1. They have successfully gone back to their roots itself since 2019.
  2. Since 2014, they have had the Sony logo at the beginning of every film they own before transitioning into one of their studios' logos, which is a nice touch.
  3. Despite their dark age, they still made some good films, such as
    • Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.
    • The Hotel Transylvania trilogy.
    • The Spider-Man films (except for The Amazing Spider-Man 2)
    • The Karate Kid (2010)
    • Men in Black 3
    • Arthur Christmas
    • The Adventure of Tintin
    • 21 Jump Street (2012)
    • 22 Jump Street
    • The Pirates! Band of Misfits
    • Premium Rush
    • Skyfall
    • Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2
    • Spectre
    • Goosebumps 1 & 2
    • Smurfs: The Lost Village
    • Blade Runner 2049
