South Park: The Stick of Truth is a 2014 role-playing video game developed by Obsidian Entertainment in collaboration with South Park Digital Studios and published by Ubisoft for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 video game consoles, and Microsoft Windows. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One release were originally free as part of a pre-order bonus for South Park: The Fractured but Whole and released separately on February 13, 2018 on both physical and digital copy for both current-gen platforms.

Development began in 2009 after South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone approached Obsidian about making a role-playing game designed to look exactly like the television series. Parker and Stone were involved throughout the game's production: they wrote its script, consulted on the design, and as in the television program they voiced many of the characters. The Stick of Truth‍ 's production was turbulent, its release date was postponed several times from its initial date in March 2013 to its eventual release in March 2014. There was also a change of publisher, following the bankruptcy of THQ, the original publisher. The game's rights were purchased by Ubisoft in early 2013.

Plot

The new kid has moved to the quiet little mountain town, known as South Park, then he meets with Eric Cartman, Butters and Princess Kenny who need the new kid's help to protect the stick of truth, which can control the universe.

Why It Truthfully Rocks

  1. You can create your own character in the style of South Park.
  2. If you're a South Park fan, it feels like playing an interactive episode of the show as you progress though the game, and that's awesome.
  3. You can chose up to four classes and they each have their own unique abilities that all have their own advantages and disadvantages, which all gives them their own uses and specialties when it comes to the battles, a fighter, mage, thief, and a Jew.
  4. Awesome role-playing gameplay that resembles that of a classic Japanese role-playing game, and what makes it truly remarkable is the fact that it doesn't feel dated at all, and holds up incredibly well to this very day, due to how perfectly well it blends with the game itself, as well as its genre and concept.
  5. Unique dialogue between characters, depending on who's on the battlefield with you.
  6. Loads of easter eggs to find. Some of them can be missed, which adds replay value.
    • Finding and making friends in the game unlocks you perks.
      • There are 121 friends to find.
    • There are also 30 Chinpokomon to find as well.
  7. Some of your party members have great special attacks and abilities to fight against at your enemies.
  8. The music is badass.
  9. A large amount of dedication and tributes for long-time fans of the show, as the game makes constant references to the show, and inserts in little easter eggs of things found in it.
  10. Funny lines from the other characters and non-playable characters, just like in the show.
  11. The Nazi zombies with Adolf Hitler's speech lines are pretty funny to hear.
  12. It feels like the South Park television series with all the characters, references from the first 17 seasons, and including some characters that hadn't appeared in years.
  13. At the end of the game, the new kid says "screw you guys, I'm going home", which surprised many players as they thought the new kid was never going to speak throughout the game.
  14. Great graphics that manage to come off as smooth, bouncy, and look exactly the same as the show's animation style.
  15. It parodies media just like the television series.
  16. The final boss, Princess Kenny, is a way better final boss compared to the final boss in its sequel.

Bad Qualities

  1. It's not very long, like other role-playing games, being beatable around 10 hours, or so, assuming you decide to skip the side quests and go for the main story.
  2. There are lots of sound glitches.
  3. Lack of any real challenge. The higher you level up in the game, the more easier it gets, even in hardcore mode.
  4. Close to zero replay value after beating the game due to no post-game content and many side quests being quite easy to miss if you didn't start them during the main story.
  5. Many weapons, outfits, and collectables can be permanently missed, if you ignore looting enemy bodies and containers throughout the storyline.
  6. Kyle is the most broken buddy you can have in your party, due to how incredibly powerful each of his abilities and attacks are, especially Summon Elemental, where with enough speed or strength potions, can allow you to cheese through most bosses.
  7. Your partner will never shut up when in battle.
  8. The anal probe minigame was censored for consoles in Europe, even though the game passed PEGI 18 uncut, making the censorship useless in Europe, due to a decision by Ubisoft's marketing team, and Australia, replaced with a placeholder screen featuring the Cain statue, and a crying koala, respectively. However, the PC in all regions, and US versions remain uncensored. The German version was also censored for Nazi imagery.
  9. Its humor mostly just has the stupid side of the show's humor, rather than also having the smart side of it, although it can be understandable, considering the game takes place after the first 17 seasons.
