Spumco, Inc. (stylized as Spümcø) was an American animation studio which was active from 1989 to 2005 and based in Los Angeles, California. The studio was best known for working on the first two seasons of The Ren & Stimpy Show and for various commercials. It won several awards, including an Annie Award for Best Animated Short Subject, for the Björk music video "I Miss You".
Spümcø was founded by animators John Kricfalusi, Bob Camp, Jim Smith and Lynne Naylor. Kricfalusi named the company after the fictional "Raymond Spüm", a character from He-Hog: The Atomic Pig, whom he jokingly described as the inventor of animation.
Why They Rocked
- They created good animated shows, like The Ren & Stimpy Show for Nickelodeon, which is considered one of the best Nicktoons from the 90s and web flash animated shows like Weekend Pussy Hunt.
- Many wonderful animators worked in the studio like Jim Smith, Vincent Waller, Eddie Fitzgerald, Lynne Naylor, the late Chris Reccardi, Dave Sheldon, Teale Wang, Elinor Blake, Gabe Swarr, Kristy Gordon, Nick Cross, Aaron Springer, Bill Wray, Scott Wills, Bob Camp and even Chris Savino. John K. also deserves a special mention.
- Great voice acting from John Kricfalusi, Billy West, Harris Peet, Cheryl Chase, Michael Pataki and Eric Bauza in their cartoons.
- They did awesome commercials and music videos to musicians like Björk and Tenacious D.
- A variety of amazing characters like Ren Höek, Stimpy J. Cat, George Liquor, Jimmy the Idiot Boy (the studio's mascot), He-Hog, Cigarettes the Cat, Bugs Pussy and many more.
- Cool animation in their cartoons.
- They also worked in video games like Yoake no Mariko and Go! Go! Hypergrind.
- The studio was revolutionary in the animation industry, for its surrealism, inspired by the 1940s cartoons of Tex Avery and Bob Clampett.
Bad Qualities
- The studio had various of their animators mistreated in the studio, mostly the ones from John K. Which could be why John K's abusive and mean-spirited treatment against the employees could show evidence that Spümcø is not a good company to work at if you want to get a job at the animation industry in general.
- Some of their cartoons, like The Goddamn George Liquor Program, He-Hog the Atomic Pig, Boo Boo Runs Wild, The Ripping Friends and most infamously, Ren & Stimpy "Adult Party Cartoon" were not well received by fans.
- Speaking of Adult Party Cartoon, because of the negative reception of APC. Carbunkle Cartoons and Bob Jaques sued John Kricfalusi for the lack of payment and good treatment to the employees for their work in Adult Party Cartoon in 2005, which caused Spümcø shut down its doors in that year.
- Two attempted successor studios of Spümcø, Spümtwo and John K. Studios didn't last long. In the case of the former, was closed due of the one of the two founders, Gabe Del Valle was rehired by Cartoon Network and in the case of latter, was closed due of the sexual and pedophilia allegations against John Kricfalusi in 2018, making the future of both successor studios unlikely in doubt, following John's retirement in the same year, although John has recently said that he may continue in animation. It's no surprise that John Kricfalusi has not been arrested yet since abuse and mistreatment of employees is actually a crime in real life, and that is one thing, but possessing child porn via computer is considered pedophilia and is actually illegal, especially in the United States. John will not be arrested or this case possibly never this time due to the cases against him having been expired.
Trivia
- Due to the allegations, John Kricfalusi will not be involved in his upcoming revival of The Ren & Stimpy Show on Comedy Central.
