Don't think this game on the PC is the Spider-Man 2 game that was on consoles. It isn't the same game!

Spider-Man 2 is an action-adventure video game loosely based on the film of the same name. They are follow-ups of the game Spider-Man, and the series is followed by Spider-Man 3. Spider-Man 2 was published by Activision for many different systems in 2004. Upon release, the game received positive reviews and is considered one of the best Activision-published Spider-Man games ever by fans. However, the praise was for the home console versions, the PC version was negatively received.
Why It Sucks
- None of the game trailers have shown that the PC was going to get a completely different game, a case of false advertising.
- Extremely simplistic controls, you move with the W-A-S-D keys, dodge with Spacebar, Right click to jump, and Left click for everything else (attacking, shooting web, etc).
- There is a spider pointer on Spider-Man's head which determines which action is made, meaning if there was no action written there, you're not doing anything.
- Unlike the console versions, this one doesn't have the revolutionary web-swinging mechanics. Instead, you have to line up the cursor to swing icons in order to.
- The story is extremely short, you can beat it in less than 4 hours.
- Poor voice acting, especially Tobey Maguire who sounds as if he wants nothing to do with this game.
- Poor animations that the characters repeat over and over again.
- The FMV cutscenes have frame rate issues.
- Sub-par graphics that are more in line with games from the fifth gen rather than the sixth.
- Terrible combat that's even more loose than its console counterpart. The combos are very limited since you can only punch, kick, and jump kick and you have to keep the cursor on an enemy in order to fight.
- While it may seem like it on the surface, this is not an open world game. While this could've been okay since the previous game was also linear, this version is even more linear with there only being one specific route with invisible walls placed everywhere that tell you "There's no need to go this way". There's also an invisible ceiling that prevents you from going any higher than a specific height.
- Bare in mind, the previous game didn't have this. When you went high enough, there weren't anymore buildings to swing on leading you to fall back to the play area; when you tried to leave the play area, Spider-Man would turn back saying he still has a job to do. Both of which makes sense.
- This version doesn't follow the movie in any way. While the console version doesn't do the best job of retelling the story of the movie, this version doesn't even try. The best example of why this version is unfaithful to the movie is that this version COMPLETELY omits the iconic scene where Spidey stops the train; he outright LETS IT DERAIL instead of trying to stop it, which proof that The Fizz Factor knows nothing about the story of the movie, which the console versions managed to do to some degree, even with the villains that didn't appear in the movie!
- The boss fights in the game are, for the most part, dumb and lame. It certainly doesn't help that the game pauses before each fight and spells out exactly what you need to do to win before every single fight. This feature and the one-button gameplay may have you thinking that the game was intended for kids.
- You earn "Hero Points" but they are completely useless as there is no store to buy anything with them.
- The game has some music, but it basically just fades into the background and stays there.
- Lots of game glitches some of which are game-breaking. DLJadow encountered a bug that broke the tutorial, preventing him from finishing it.
The Only Redeeming Quality
- The music for the most part, is awesome, such as the credits music performed by The Distillers.
Reception
The PC version received negative reviews from critics and fans alike. Many fans criticized the watered down gameplay and short campaign, Jeff Gerstmann gave the PC version a 5/10 and said that the gameplay in Spider-Man 2 on PC is stripped down to a fault. Many argued that the PC version should have been a port of the console versions like its prequel is.
