SpongeBob in Tehran (Persian: باب اسفنجی در تهران; Bab Esfanji Dar Tehran) is a 2017 unfinished Iranian computer-animated made-for-television comedy bootleg film that is based upon the illegal SpongeBob SquarePants Persian dub, Bab Esfanji. Not much is known about the film, except that it was broadcast on December 18, 2017, and spawned three sequels.

Plot

This animated story about the friendship of SpongeBob and Patrick in Tehran. It's interesting to know that Bob and his friend Patrick, who travel to Iran for the first time, catch their attention with their hamburgers until they notice something happening.

Why This Nautical Nonsense Is Something Everyone Unwished

  1. Similar to its Persian dub, this film was produced without the authorization of Nickelodeon and Paramount, lacking a license from the company, thereby rendering it copyrighted and unlawfully created.
  2. The film's duration is quite brief, at only 44 minutes, which gives it the feel of an elongated TV special rather than a full-length feature. The fact that the film remains incomplete also accounts for its abrupt ending on a cliffhanger.
  3. The movie poster is essentially a subpar edit of the cover art from SpongeBob SquarePants: Plankton's Robotic Revenge, a game that has already received negative reviews.
  4. The animation is absolutely atrocious and laughable, looking a lot like the SpongeBob point and click PC games, a film made by either Dingo Pictures or Vídeo Brinquedo or a cartoon made by Xing Xing Digital. There are also countless amounts of animation errors from here to there, and the backgrounds look like they been copied and pasted from the internet.
    • There was even one scene where a Krusty Krab customer eats a Krabby Patty and somehow grew muscles but then later becomes weaker and his eyes starts falling out with black seeds coming out of his mouth, which is very disgusting and disturbing to watch.
    • There are also some moments where an object clips through something, such as when the oil tanker runs into an iceberg and breaks in half.
  5. The plot is utterly nonsensical and inconsistent, as later on, the film abandons its main narrative for a series of random events, rendering the plot meaningless.
    • Moreover, the geographical distance between Bikini Bottom in the Pacific Ocean and Iran is impractically vast.
  6. False advertising:
    • Contrary to the plot's suggestion that the film centers on SpongeBob and Patrick's friendship during their travels in Iran, the story actually unfolds with SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward journeying to Iran because the Krusty Krab has run out of a special Iranian sauce needed for the Krabby Patties.
    • Sandy appears prominently on the movie poster, implying a significant role, yet she is completely absent from the film itself.
  7. It contains an abundance of filler and scenes that excessively prolong the narrative, such as:
    • SpongeBob and his friends navigating through traffic, which lasts for a solid six minutes.
    • SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward enjoying a meal of Iranian cuisine.
    • SpongeBob, Patrick and Squidward watching a soccer game.
  8. The opening text appears to be extensively copied from various sources.
  9. There are some pretty disturbing, unsettling, and off-putting scenes, such as:
    • Mr. Krabs pointing several guns at SpongeBob, following SpongeBob's warning about the Krusty Krab being in jeopardy, a moment that seems quite incongruous in a SpongeBob-related film.
    • A Krusty Krab patron consuming a Krabby Patty and inexplicably gaining muscles, only to later weaken and experience his eyes falling out along with black seeds spewing from his mouth.
  10. This led to the creation of two sequels, both of which are equally disappointing.
  11. The film's conclusion is quite unsatisfying, as it leaves the audience hanging with an abrupt cliffhanger, a result of the film being unfinished.
  12. The excessive use of stock sound effects, particularly those from Hanna-Barbera, is notable.
  13. The comedy is notably lackluster and not amusing, primarily consisting of weak attempts at slapstick and dark humor.
  14. The film had the potential to be passable at least; unfortunately, this potential was squandered by the numerous issues it presented.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Truly, the movie is so terrible, it's enjoyable, as are its sequels: SpongeBob in Chabahar, Bobby and Bobo in Iran: Save the Sibyl Gold, and SpongeBob in Tehran 2: Alien Friends.
  2. The voice acting can sound amusing to some.
  3. The characters are still likable.
