Stargate Infinity is a 2002-2003 French-American-Canadian animated television series produced by DIC Entertainment and their French subsidiary Les Studios Tex for MGM Television Entertainment. It is a spin-off of the Stargate franchise.

Plot

A veteran of the Stargate program, four cadets, and a mysterious alien are prevented from returning to Earth by a traitor. The heroes must use the Stargate network to find another way back home while keeping one step ahead of their enemies.

Why It’s Not Infinity

  1. Very, very poor grasp of the source material. The series, outside having the Stargate system and the Goa'uld and the Ancients as alien races, has almost nothing else to do with the franchise.
    • Brad Wright, the co-creator of Stargate SG-1 has personally considered the series as non-canon, saying in an interview: "I don't have a problem with [Stargate Infinity]. I'm just not involved. MGM have also canonally made the series non-canon as well.
  2. Cheap and obnoxious animation, even for DIC standards.
  3. Poor character and sound design, as mentioned above.
  4. The show tries very hard to appeal to an FCC E/I demographic despite being too violent for an E/I targeted audience, and it shows:
    • In every episode, Gus will shoehorn in a historical fact regarding something, which gets old fast.
    • Shoehorned and cliched morals, like "Be yourself", "The power of friendship" and "stay off drugs".
    • In fact, the show feels like a watered-down version of the live-action shows, but yet still tries to be like typical Saturday-morning cartoons despite the E/I rating, meaning the show doesn't know what its target audience is!
  5. The new species of creatures made for this series, such as the Tlak'khan; the Hrathi, and the Otsorok, are bland and forgettable.
  6. Annoying and poorly written dialogue that will get on your last nerve.
  7. A lot of unfunny and terrible humor.
  8. Poorly written episodes with an endless amount of plot holes.
  9. Awful soundtrack, especially the opening theme and credits music, which contains some of the worst singing and lyrics to ever come out of a cartoon.
  10. It is way too fast-paced, with the action just going over the top and constantly going towards another.
  11. The show ends on a cliffhanger that was never resolved as the series was canceled after its only season.
  12. The team behind the other installments in the Stargate franchise like SG-1 and MGM themselves (They only distributed the series outside the US, and held the show's copyright) had no involvement with the production of the series. This has led to many discrepancies:
    • All of the Stargates in this series have irises, which the SCG Stargate only had in franchise canon. They also have only 8 chevrons, rather than 9 chevrons in other materials.
      • In all honesty, Stargate Universe, the show that explained the usage of the ninth chevron, was years away, meaning DIC couldn't have known that the precise chevron number was important.
    • In the episode "The Long Haul", a third Stargate is activated on Earth without any problems. In the live-action shows, only one Stargate portal can exist or be accessed on a planet at any given time. Earth only had two Stargates because the first got buried under ice after the Ancients left Earth, meaning the Goa'uld had to bring in another one which took over.
    • In the same episode when Nephestus opens up a Stargate, Tlak'khan soldiers travel through them. The show's logic makes the viewers think that active wormholes from Stargates can be traveled through from either side, which in the franchise's canon, is not true in the slightest.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. This series is confirmed to be non-canon to the Stargate franchise (as mentioned in WIS #1).
  2. At the very least this show tried to pass off our galaxy as teeming with aliens, something SG-1 wasn't able to do because of budget limitations.
  3. The basic storyline was unique, meaning it could have been amazing had it been for better writing.
