Super Mario World (also referred to by some as Super Mario World: The Animated Series) is an American-Canadian-Italian children's animated television series based on the homonym SNES game. It is the third and most recent animated series based on the Mario video game series, with the other two being The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! and The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3.
Why It's a Blast from the Past
- It has a very decent grasp on the Mario games and the grasp on the game it is based off, with it mostly being very faithful to that game in particular.
- Yoshi debuts for the first time in a Mario cartoon; he is very likeable and memorable here too.
- The voice acting is very good too, mainly due to the fact that the voice actors from The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 reprise their roles here.
- The show has had tons of memorable episodes, such as "The Night Before Cave Christmas" and "Mama Luigi" (Which ended this show on a high note).
- The musical score is very good, as many of the songs that play in each episode are fantastic remixes to some of the soundtracks from Super Mario World.
- The animation is still quite decent, as it retains the same character designs from Super Mario Bros. Super Show and The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3.
- The theme song is catchy and fun to listen to.
- Some episodes even teach younger audiences good morals that are positive for them.
Bad Qualities
- Although the character designs are good and animation is decent, it can also be very cheap and limited at times compared to the two previous shows, so much that it can get confusing if this was intentional or not, although the quality can depend per episode.
- This was due to animation being provided by Pacific Rim Animation rather than Sei Young Animation, as the latter was growing more expensive due to being hired by Ted Turner, largely for Captain Planet and the Planeteers.
- Much like The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, the Koopalings still have different names compared to their official names (e.g. Wendy being called Kootie Pie).
- Yoshi's voice by Andrew Sabiston, despite not being openly bad, can be rather annoying and grating.
- Oogtar can be irritating at times and can often cause trouble to the point he becomes the main conflict of the episode.
- It only lasted for one season with 13 episodes.
Episodes with their own pages
- The Night Before Cave Christmas
- Mama Luigi
Reception
Upon airing on NBC, the show got mixed reviews from critics, audiences, and fans of the Mario franchise.
Trivia
- Unlike the previous Mario shows, Toad does not make an appearance in this cartoon, though this was most likely done because Toad doesn't actually make an appearance in the actual game.
- Many moments from this cartoon spawned internet memes.
- This was the final Mario cartoon to be made by DiC Entertainment, as well as the last time the colors on Mario and Luigi's overalls (which are red and green respectively instead of blue) and shirts (which are blue in the cartoon instead of red and green respectively) would be inverted.
- This is the second-last Mario universe cartoon to date if you count the Donkey Kong Country TV series.
