Superjail! is an American adult animated television series created by Christy Karacas, Stephen Warbrick, and Ben Gruber. The pilot episode aired on television on May 13, 2007, and its first season began on September 28, 2008 on Cartoon Network's late night programming block, Adult Swim.
Superjail! is characterized by its psychedelic shifts in setting and plot and extreme graphic violence, which give the series a TV-MA-V rating (for graphic violence, including scenes of bloodshed, dismemberment, torture, and extreme cruelty). These elements are depicted through highly elaborate animated sequences, which have been described as "Baroque and complicated and hard to take in at a single viewing."
Plot
Superjail is the world's largest, most brutal prison. Built beneath a volcano, it is routinely the site of riots and murders. Its megalomaniacal warden doesn't like conventional prisons and has chosen to make his facility unlike any other. The warden's assistant, uptight Superjail accountant Jared, originally arrived at the jail as a prisoner but got his job after impressing the warden with his intelligence. Even the resident doctor gets in on the brutality of Superhail, for he regularly performs grotesque experiments on the inmates.
Why It Rocks
- Awesome and colorful animation.
- Mature and dark adult comedy not meant for kids.
- Brilliant voice acting, especially to the Warden and Jared.
- Like Happy Tree Friends, there are tons of blood and gore and extreme violence, but unlike King Star King (which the creators unfairly praise), there's more to it than just the gore.
- Hilarious and interesting plots.
- Superb soundtrack, including "I'm Coming Home".
- The prisoners deaths are extremely creative and funny.
- Good writing.
- The characters are creative and memorable:
- The Warden is the owner of Superjail and the main protagonist of the series, a tall and thin man who wears a suit and hat, with an appearance similar to Willy Wonka and always tries to make Superjail into something exotic, but he always ends up killing several convicts.
- Jared is the accountant for Superjail; in addition to serving Warden. He is an alcoholic, addicted to sweets and lives nervous and stressed.
- Alice is the huge, muscular Superjail prison guard, who is transgender and regularly participates in sadomasochistic rituals with prisoners (often without her consent), although she rejects the Guardian's constant advances. She was originally a male guard in a normal prison, but discovered her true nature when she fell in love with the gay warden of that prison.
- Jailbot it is the robot that serves Warden; he is in charge of imprisoning criminals.
- The Twins are a pair of twin brothers from another planet whose position in Superjail is unclear; they are always up to something that most of the time causes a disaster in the establishment that ends up killing several convicts, although rarely their actions end up improving things as the Guardian expected.
- Great intro, Jacknife appears from the beginning to do crimes and other things and then Jailbot appears to take him to Superjail.
Bad Qualities
- Some scenes can be disturbing for some people and viewers, due to the blood and extreme violence.
- Sometimes the characters can be incredibly unlikeable.
- Toilet humor is unfunny at times.
- It can be very mean spirited at times.
- The death of Cancer (pronounced "san-sir") is very sad. Thankfully, the show doesn't just completely play it off like a joke, but it can feel like a big tonal shift compared to the otherwise zany humor of the show.
- While the animation is still awesome, but has some hiccups;
- In season one, Augenblick Studios animated the show (mostly in season 1 and pilot), while decent, it's not as good as the animation in season two through four, which are done in Flash MX. After season one ends, they move on to animated a new TV series written and created by Tyler, the Creator called "The Jellies!".
- In season two, The new animation, Titmouse Inc. animated the show animated the show (mostly in season 2 through 4), while an improvement season one, and while awesome, has mixed reviews from fans due to new, more rubbery style (while great), the scene transitions and camera angles were mostly absent. Luckily It's were brought back in full force for season 3 (in an attempt to bring back the Augenblick style).
- In season four, it got a considerable bump in animation quality.
