King Star King is an American adult animated web series created by J.J. Villard for Adult Swim; Eric Kaplan is the co-creator for the pilot episode. The series aired on the network's online video streaming service Adult Swim Video on June 15, 2014, before it was aired on TV.

The series was brought back in 2023 with a Christmas special.

Plot

The series revolves around the titular character, King Star King, a tall, blond muscular man. After seducing his love, Princess Snow White, he falls from his higher plane of existence to serve as a fry cook in a run-down waffle house. In order to reclaim his place in the heavens, he must battle his amnesia to defeat the evil Spring Bunny and rescue Snow White.

Why It's the King of Bad Adult Animation

  1. Ugly and grotesque animation that much like The Wacky World of Tex Avery, Ren & Stimpy "Adult Party Cartoon", Mega Babies, Superjail! (Which isn't basically a terrible show but does have its flaws), JJ Villard's Fairy Tales (another cartoon by JJ Villard), and George of the Jungle (2007), can go from ugly and grotesque to downright disturbing.
  2. Hideous character designs with some of them looking familiar to characters from other shows, movies, or video games.
    • To the extent point, Pooza looks eerily similar to Kamek from Super Mario Bros. and Donald Duck or Dolan Duck (a poorly drawn Donald Duck meme).
    • Even Gurbles looks nothing like a flying robot bear as he was supposed to be, and more like a poop monster with human arms.
  3. Awful and forced voice acting, especially King Star King himself.
  4. All of the characters are either stupid, unlikable, or stereotypical.
    • King Star King is a perverted party animal.
    • Hank Waffles is a nervous guy.
    • Pooza is a loudmouth character who never shuts up.
    • Gurbles is the comic relief that barely serves any purpose to the story.
  5. Bad editing that literally cuts the scene after a new character appears, just for the sake of making more psychedelic imagery.
  6. The character names are very bland and laughable such as Tim Tumor, Pooza, Gurbles, God Star God, Mike Balls, Alfonso Molestro, and Fat Frank.
    • Heck, even the title has the protagonist's name too!
  7. The show used Snow White from the classic fairy tale as the main character's love interest, proving how lazy the writers are to come up with an original love interest.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. The soundtrack is decent to listen to.
  2. Though ugly and grotesque, the animation is surprisingly good.
    • In fact, Titmouse Inc. did a great job by making the animation more fluid than Mirari Films did.
  3. The series' concept is a very creative and unique idea on paper but is ruined because of the gross-out humor and mean-spirited moments.

Trivia

  • The series was brought back as a Christmas special in 2023.
    • Christy Karacas, creator of Superjail!, loved King Star King so much, he actually agreed to work on the special as storyboard consultant.

Reception

King Star King received mixed-to-negative reviews by both critics and audiences for its grotesque animation style and nonsensical writing and is considered one of the worst Adult Swim shows of all time.[1] Since then, the series has rapidly fallen into much obscurity.

On its IMDb page, it holds a 5.7/10 rating.[2]
