"Family Matching Case" (Titled Swapping Moms in the original) is an episode from the 1979 series.
Plot
Nobita, Shizuka and Suneo are all fed up with their moms, so Doraemon takes out a gadget that allows them to swap each others moms (Suneo's mom becomes Shizuka's, Nobita's mom becomes Suneo's and Shizuka's mom becomes Nobita's). After staying with each other's moms for a whole day, they start to miss their own mothers and realize they weren't so bad after all.
Good Qualities
- The plot is quite unique and it wasn't done in a lot of shows (except in Shin-Chan except that the "I Swap Moms" episode was terrible and the title was misleading), the plot basically is that the characters had enough of their mom scolding, and they want to change their moms, until they realised that they aren't that bad.
- Even though they are out of characters, they actually are relatable here because considering that they had enough of being scolded by their parents and because of this, they want to change mothers to do another experience, even if that would not pass in real life.
- As usual with the 90s episodes, the animation is very good and fluid, the animation in the 1979 original is also decent but not great though as it had still a few errors.
- Instead of being not honest, Shizuka did give the money that Suneo parents did give to her, which is very mature for a 10 years old girl.
- The moms are also very likable in this episode as they treat their childs with respect and even apologize for yelling at them, the most likable one is easily Shizuka mom because of how caring she was to Nobita, until that she discover Shizuka cloths when she did get a gadget change from Doraemon, with both Doraemon and Nobita running away.
- The parts where everyone does experience their "new mother" are very entairtaining as we see how they live in their house, and unlike some other episodes with the characters that live their lifes in their house for the whole episode, at least this episode is more amusing because it had some funny moments, and this give this episode a bit of a sitcom side.
- After they all experienced what it was like to had a new mom, they realise that their mothers are not so bad (well except for a few of them because of not being well received), and they want to go back to their true moms, meaning that they take responsability for their act, even Nobita accept it, it isn't common for Nobita to be mature or responsable of his actions.
- Good Moral: When the parents scold you, they aren't always mean but sometime it is for their good and that doesn't automatically mean that they are bad parents.
- Funny Ending: Nobita call his mom, with Shizuka mom laughing about that, and Nobita mom found his underwear, although the latter part could be considered as innapropriate (sort of depend on your view).
Bad Qualities
- The episode in some parts didn't aged very well, especially the scene where Nobita is in a Shizuka dress, in which lot of peoples could find it cursed or even innapropriate, even worse it wasn't edited in the 1992 remake.
- Though fortunately, that scene last for only 10 seconds, until Nobita and Doraemon leave Shizuka house and getting their true mother again, so at least the cursed didn't lasted long.
- The characters, particulary Nobita, act out of character in the first half as while they are relatable, they could be seen as ungrateful since they want to change parents because of being scolded too much, and this could also be seen as something that hasn't aged well for this episode because of nowadays where many childrens are like that but in a real degree and not just for experiencing another thing.
- While funny, the ending could feel slightly innapropriate because Nobita mom found his underwear in Shizuka house, which is innapropriate even by Doraemon standards.
- The moms in the beginning are also a bit unlikable, as they yell at their kid, exemples coule include Nobita mother that scolded him for an F, again! Though it was for good intentions but still...
