Swiped is a 2018 comedy film directed by Ann Deborah Fishman, and starring Nathan Gamble and Noah Centineo. It was released directly to iTunes and Netflix.

Plot

A tech-savvy college student is coerced into creating an app that allows for anonymous hookups with no commitment. Things go downhill from there...

Why It Should Be Swiped Away

  1. The movie is essentially one giant shot at hookup and millennial culture, but it's clear the writers are out-of-touch with the online dating scene.
  2. The app that is the focal point of the movie is a terrible idea, even with the film pointing it out; most notably, it has no age limit. This is even mentioned by one of the characters as a benefit.
  3. The director claims the movie is satirical, but if it is, it clearly misses the point. She also railed against the negative reviews on twitter which obviously didn't help anything.
  4. The movie is also just The Social Network if it had nothing good about it at all.
  5. The characters' characterization and their actions frequently contradict each other. For instance, James is portrayed as shy and socially awkward, but after deciding to take the project, he immediately becomes assertive for no real reason.
  6. The movie is extremely sexist to both genders
    • All men are portrayed as horny chauvinistic.
    • All women are assumed to want "pure", committed relationships. Those who don't are portrayed as bad.
  7. Terrible and unrealistic dialogue like "You must be my soon-to-be-transferred-to-another-college roommate."
  8. Bad acting all around, including one scene where a character is supposed to be surprised and impressed but his facial expression looks like one of horror in a terrible B-movie.
  9. Terrible editing and cinematography:
    • Many of the shots are poorly framed, and several times, the camera gets blocked by foreground objects.
    • Several times, the camera goes out of focus.
    • The sound editing is terrible; the volume changes frequently, and people's voices tend to echo.
    • Bad lighting.

Reception

The movie received mostly negative reviews, with a 20% from Rotten Tomatoes and a 2.8/10 on IMDb.

In response, Ann Deborah Fishman, the film's director, co-producer, and writer, alongside several crew members of the film, reacted very negatively to the reception of this film and proceeded to go online to call out people who gave the film negative reviews, even going as far as to bully them, proving that they cannot handle criticism. They also abused YouTube's community guidelines and copyright system by flagging a number of negative video reviews on YouTube.
