It is the fifth main and sixth installment, in the Tekken series, marking the tenth anniversary of the series. an update was released for Arcades and the PSP called Tekken: Dark Resurrection and Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection for the PS3.

Plot (Tekken 5)

Moments after Jin defeated Kazuya and Heihatchi and left the temple, an army of Jack 4 robots were sent by G Corporation to kill Heihatchi and Kazuya, they were able to surround Heihatchi and create a big explosion around him which didn't kill him but blew him away and made everyone think he's dead.

The explosion however was strong enough to awaken Jinpachi Mishima from the underworld, Heihatchi's father who's cursed with demons, and he takes control of the Mishima company and announces the King of Iron Fist Tournament 5.

Why It Rocks

Overall

  1. The gameplay was massive improvement over Tekken 4 which make the series return to it's roots by reverted the movement back to 2.5D movement instead of Dead or Alive-esque movement, removing the poorly executed mechanics such as pillars, uneven ground and wall tech. while refining some of the mechanics of that game (juggles, walls, etc)
  2. Amazing introduction to the game with the intro showing amazing introduction to the game as well showing Heihatchi Mishima being killed which was really exciting.
  3. The game features a total of 32 playable characters, consisting of 26 returning and 6 new ones, which was a massive improvement over Tekken 4.
    • Asuka Kazama: Jin's cousin who practices the Kazama style martial arts
    • Devil Jin: For the first time ever Devil Jin is fully playable and he plays a lot like Devil Kazuya
    • Raven: A Ninja assassin who came to assassinate Heihachi
    • Feng Wei: An arrogant prodigy of the God Fist style who searches through Japan for information about the scrolls of God Fist.
    • Jinpachi Mishima: The final boss of the game and although unplayable in most versions of the game, he's a badass character with a really amazing backstory.
    • Dragonov: A member of Russian Spetsnaz practicing Sambo who is sent to capture the bearer of the Devil Gene, Jin Kazama (Not in the original version).
    • Lili De Rochefort: A Monégasque teenager practicing Street Fighting (Not in the original version).
    • Armor King II: A successor to the original Armor King who wants to avenge him (Not in the original version).
  4. This game introduce Crush System which affects vulnerability of a character while they attacking. For example, moves with crouching properties, such as Snake Edge, will be completely Invulnerable during most of its animation time to all of an opponent high attacks.
  5. This game is the first Tekken game to allow character customization.
  6. You can play the older Tekken Games (Tekken 1, 2, and 3) as well as Starblade (has to be unlocked in Devil Within mode) as this game is also a Arcade Emulator.
  7. Awesome soundtrack, that ranging from a calmy, fun music, (Poolside, Waterfall) to straight up melodic metal. (Final Stage 2)
  8. A few new characters, such as Asuka, Feng Wei, Raven, Devil Jin, and Roger Jr. (Roger's Son and wife).
  9. Story mode has improved, with everyone having interludes if the player character face opponent that they know. ie: xiaoyu vs jin, heihachi vs kazuya etc. (with some exception)
  10. Characters are much more balanced now, almost no character feels as unfair as before.
  11. Characters now have unique costumes, with returning ones having much better costumes that the ones in Tekken 4.
  12. New to the series is the hot system which affects the vulnerability of character while they attack. For example, a move with jumping properties, such as a hop-kick, will be completely invulnerable during most of its animation time to all of an opponent's low attacks.
  13. Devil Jin is finally playable instead of being exclusive to Jin's cutscenes, that being said, they're both different characters (same person but different character slots).
  14. Lots of characters speak now speak their native language. (with several having some exception due to background reason).
  15. Introduces customization, where you can buy cosmetics with in game money you earn while playing and customize your character in any way you want, a feature that would be a staple to the series.
  16. Devil Within Mode, which is a replacement for Tekken Force, you play as Jin in a 3D platformer/Beat em up in a labrynth style levels with a story that's a retelling of Tekken 3 Jin's story, you can also unlock lots of stuff in Devil Within mode such as customizations.
  17. Introduces Rankings, where you earn different ranks while playing in Arcade matches, which would be a staplel to the series and expanded upon it with online gaming.
  18. The endings for every character is amazing, with it can range from funny such as Roger Jr, Xiaou and Asuka to sad and dark such as Jinpachi, Feng Wei and Kazuya.
  19. At the beginning of the game, you get to play an arcade game called Starblade as part of a loading screen, and as mentioned, you can unlock the whole thing in Arcade History.
  20. Outstanding graphics that looks so much better than Tekken 4 which was already great.
  21. The game's modes, unlockables, arcade history and Devil Within mode will provide a huge amount of replay value for the player even if they're playing alone.

Dark Resurrection (PSP)

  1. The port is near identical to the PS2 version with minimal differences and removes as little content as possible.
  2. The character roster increases with 3 characters, Lili, Dragonov and Armor King II (Simply Titled Armor King).
  3. Arcade mode's rankings are expanded with 12 more ranking.
  4. Several new stages were added (Though some are modified stages of previous stages)
  5. Customization was expanded with more items than before
  6. Lots of new modes that replaces the removed content, including:
    • Gold Rush mode: In this mode, the player must deal as much damage as possible to their opponent within 30 seconds. Each hit adds up the gold value. If the player is hit, they will lose a great amount of gold earned. The higher the difficulty and the better the combos, the more gold is awarded when the opponent is hit.
    • Tekken Dojo: a new mode exclusive to the PSP version. The player picks a character and battles a variety of Ghost characters in ranked battles, doing well in League Tournaments improves the player's rank.
    • Tekken Bowl: Tekken Bowling mode returns in the game.
    • Command Attack: an unlockable game mode used only for the PSP version. The player will be tasked with using a specific set of ten moves, throws, and five to six sample combos listed used by their character.
  7. All characters are now unlocked from the start (Tho this may upset some players)
  8. Some changes, Jinpachi is now a lava monster instead of a crystal monster like in the original. And he was redone to become a bit more easier to battle with.
  9. This game resolves alot of balancing issues that the original Tekken 5 had.
  10. More customizable features than the original version.
  11. Tekken Bowl returns (PSP Only).
  12. Some stage from Tekken 5 has completly altered, with stages having different color, texture and music. For the example stage like City of Sunset now has been changed to City Lights. And it's now set on the nightime instead of sunset.
  13. Speaking of the music. It now features a completely rearranged version of the original Tekken 5 music. Which was just as good, if not better than the original.
  14. Increased the amount of rankings in the game.
  15. All of the characters are unlocked from the start, though this may not please some players who spent a bunch of time on the original version of the game unlocking them in the first place.

Dark Resurrection (PS3)

  1. Includes Online mode, a first for the series that would be an expansion to the series' competitive gaming.
  2. And not to mention you can change the stages back to the Tekken 5 version which increase the variety of the stages.
  3. Jinpachi can be unlocked and played with, unlike other versions.

Bad Qualities

Overall

  1. Jinpachi Mishima is an extremely hard final boss, he even has unavoidable attacks that can take half of your health
  2. Unlike other games, the final boss, Jinpachi Mishima isn't unlockable (probably because of how hard he is), he is unlockable in the PS3 version however.
  3. Yoshimitsu's healing ability can heal your entire health now as opposed to healing a small part which can be unfair.
  4. Devil Within can get a little repetitive
  5. Some may be disappointed that Devil Within lets you only play as Jin instead of any character like in previous games.
  6. For the first Tekken game to have character customization, it was somewhat limited as some characters only have a few items to choose from.
  7. Like mentioned in T5DR WIR #4, this game has alot of balancing issues, that so many that you maybe need to watch the video shown below.
  8. Devil Within mode was inferior to Tekken 4's Tekken Force mode, with the mode now focus on platforming and puzzle solving. Resulting the combat to got overly simplified to a basic level with instead of having regular fighting control like the other Tekken beat' em up modes, now it's just generic hack'n slash style control. Making the combat tend to get repetitive very quickly. Not to mention the envoirment is fairly generic and out of the 5 levels. this mode has only 3 envoirment. Contrasted with Tekken 4 Force Mode where every level has different envoirment.
    • At last but not least, the cutscenes in this mode was text only. Meaning that no effort was put into this mode.
      • Compared to Mortal Kombat Armageddon's Konquest mode (which was release a year later) this mode plays poor in comparison.
  9. Tekken 5 dropped the dark and realistic tone that present on the previous game resulting the various change from the art direction, setting, and the story:
    • The male characters has appeared to be slightly beefier than the previous game, with marduk being the worst example.
    • Fantasy theme stages returns with the stage now set on the various envoirment such as castle, arctic, etc.
    • The fantasy characters are also returns with JACK, Roger jr. and Mokujin,
    • A lot of interesting idea from Tekken 4's character story was either retconned or followed up poorly.
      • The most infamous of them all were Bryan and Paul where the former were supposed to became good but later turned on Dr.B and starts his rivalry with Yoshimitsu. and the latter get retconned where he lost to Kuma, resulting Paul we know today.
  10. Most of the dialogue is recycled, for example when you play as Nina (You fight Anna) or Anna (You fight Nina) and you defeat them, they will say the same exact thing. (This was the first time Tekken allowed swearing in the game, as if Anna/Nina gets defeated and Nina/Anna refuse to kill them. She will say "You Bitch" and throw a tantrum.)
  11. The Demo version was terrible, as you only play as Raven and the opponent is Asuka and you can only play in 1 stage (2 stages if randomized), and only have 1 round. And then the demo ends, Tekken 4's demo was a lot better than this.

Dark Resurrection (PSP)

  1. Due to limitations, some stuff was removed such as Devil Within, tho it was replaces by extra content.
  2. The ending cutscenes are recycled from Tekken 5, and it shows Jinpachi in his Crystal Form instead of his Lava Form. This was a error, due to Namco not remaking the Jinpachi cutscene, in fact the Jinpachi cutscene when you get a game over was removed in this version.
  3. Armor King and Dragunov were rubbish in their first game due to they missing some important moves and properties that would debut on the next game.

Dark Resurrection (PS3)

  1. The PS3 version removed Story mode and doesn't add any extras other than online.
  2. The PS3 version lacks many modes from the PSP version and the PS2 version such as Arcade mode, Tekken Bowl mode and Customization mode.
    • In fact, on the original release of this game. The game lacks Practice mode. Something that would be patched shortly after.

Reception

The game received critical acclaim with praise for the return of classic gameplay features and the large amount of replay value provided by the PlayStation 2 port though the final boss was criticized for being too powerful, while Jin's story mode was perceived as "boring" in comparison to the fighting game part.

Many consider this the best Tekken game as well as one of the best fighting games.

Trivia

  1. This is the first time the final boss isn't playable, Jinpachi is playable however in the PS3 version.
  2. Although many other games in the series had updated versions, this is the only game in the series to have the updated and the original versions release as two separate games
  3. Although this is the first time Devil Jin appears as a playable character, it's not his first appearance in general, but his roles were usually small.
  4. The trailers showed Heihatchi die in the trailer (the beginning of the intro in the game) which was a huge debate at the time until Namco confirmed he's alive.
  5. Although Devil Kazuya doesn't appear as a playable character, Kazuya's purple suit can be customized to look like Devil Kazuya.
  6. Jinpachi has an ending despite being unplayable, while playing Story Mode, lose to him and do not continue.
