Meanwhile, Kazuya Mishima, Jin's father, who has risen to lead G Corporation, places a bounty on his son's head. In retaliation, Jin announces the sixth King of Iron Fist Tournament to lure Kazuya out. Meanwhile a soldier named Lars Alexandersson who leads a coup d'état along with his underlings. Losing his memory in an attack against Jin Kazama's Mishima Zaibatsu special forces, Lars goes on a journey with a robot named Alisa Bosconovitch to learn his identity, so that he will be able to recover the subject of his mission.

Why It Rocks

  1. The game has bigger stages with more interactivity than its predecessors, including walls or floors that can be broken to reveal new fighting areas which would be a staple to the series.
    • The stages are also beautiful to look at, with Temple Ground having the best example with night/day transition every few seconds.
    • The scenario campaign stages also looks goodw especially for the times.
  2. The customization option has improved a lot, you can also unlock items that can affect gameplay such as weapons.
  3. A new Rage system gives characters more damage per hit when their vitality is below a certain point. Once activated, a reddish energy aura appears around the character, and their health bar starts to flicker in red.
  4. Scenario Campaign, which is the successor to Tekken Force and Devil Within, a beat em up campaign where you can play with any character you want and you go through big stages and fight lots of enemies and when you fight a main character (Kazuya for instance) it switches to a fighting game
    • Scenario Campaign has 25 stages which is longer than Tekken Force or Devil Within.
    • A mission in Scenario Campaign has the option to let you play as a giant robot which is really cool.
    • Scenario campaign also tells the main story of the game as opposed to waiting for the real ending of the game with the next installment.
    • You can also unlock lots of stuff for customization.
    • An update was released in 2010 that lets you play Scenario Campaign in online coop.
  5. Introducing Arena mode, very similar to story mode in previous games where you play as other characters not connected to Scenario campaign and play matches and unlock an ending after the final one.
  6. 41 Playable characters (34 returning, 7 new) and all of the characters from Tekken 5 return as well.
  7. Amazing graphics for its time, it is also even better than in Tekken 5
  8. The PSP version is an amazing port, with some minor exceptions such as Scenario Campaign and Online mode, it's on par with the console versions.
  9. Awesome soundtracks, that mostly consist of Melodic Orchestra, while mixing it up with Electronic Music and Traditional Music with Karma, Arisa, and Just one Fight as the best example.
  10. Arcade Mode has a special boss called NANCY-MI847J, A giant robot that is extremely hard but no punishment for losing against it but you get lots of rewards if you beat it.
  11. Online mode returns and it has been improved after Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection Online, it's still active even today.
  12. This game is the last Tekken games to have Beat'em up modes, and it's a massive improvement over Tekken 5's Devil Within, with the controls now reverted back to the regular fighting controls instead of the basic hack'n slash controls like in the previous game and the tedious platforming/puzzling section now has completely removed, while also adding new features such as weapons for example.
    • Speaking of WIR 2&10 the customization actually affects the gameplay of the scenario campaign with the items having differents kinds of buffs such as having more damage, having hit effects based on the elements (Basically standard RPG stuff) and having extra bounds.
  13. Despite the downgrades, the PSP version is almost the same as the console versions.

Bad Qualities

  1. The final Boss Azazel is considered worse than the previous game's boss, Jinpachi, as he's always on rage mode, he's way to huge that the screen has to get smaller and his attacks make lots of damage while your attacks make half the damage against him (Even worse in his gold form)
    • Also, unlike Jinpachi, he doesn't have an interesting story/lore, his reason for existence isn't even explained until Tekken 8
  2. Scenario campaign has been criticized for the following reasons:
    • The campaign can get repetitive with how many stages are recycled, it's very noticable too.
    • You're forced to play Scenario campaign if you want to unlock customization feature or characters for Arena Mode.
    • Your Partner Ai is terrible.
    • The campaign's story is considered the worst in the series, as it's mostly forgettable and it flanderized Jin by turning him evil for no reason.
    • Lars is an uninteresting character yet Scenario campaign forces you to play with him most of the time.
    • The story doesn't focus much on Kazuya and Heihatchi which makes the cover a little misleading.
  3. The character Endings are also awful for the most part, with many of them just ignoring the prologue at the beginning, for example, Asuka's prologue is about her entering the King of Iron Fist Tournament 6 to see Jin but her ending is her fighting with Lilli because she ruined her first day at school.
  4. Most of the new characters are uninteresting, with some of them being extremely unbalanced such as Lars and Bob.
  5. The game doesn't have much improvement over Tekken 5.
  6. The Customization, while good had some problems.
    • Navigations felt tedious because you had to scroll the items one by one. this is because you don't have the color sliders.
    • Not every characters able to accsess every items, for example: some characters have upper accsesories while some others don't.
  7. Some character endings were recycled, which a few of them show a character holding a orb and getting possessed by the devil gene. Although Hwoarang's ending shows him throwing the orb and then breaks it
  8. Aside from Miguel and Bob, the new characters are uninteresting to say at least.
  9. The graphics, while better than the previous game, is slightly worse on PS3. as the game is shown in 576p instead of 720p
    • This is because the developer got the framerate issue on the PS3 so they had to downscale it in favor of the stable framerate.
    • The character models can look very off.
    • The color palette can look very boring as it overuses the green color filter.
  10. The balancing issues were still prominent in this game, though not as bad as the previous game.
    • Lars got so many broken tools in his arsenal, such as his Storm Axle (u/f4) bound on air, Tactical Sword (d/f2) being safe mid CH launcher, and Lightning Flash (u/f3) being insane crush tool.
    • Bob is also ridiculously broken, that you maybe need to see certain youtube videos below.
    • Almost all cast from the previous game had been nerfed. With Kazuya and Heihachi being the worst example.
  11. Bryan Fury's new laugh voice clip, sounded terrible. It is like the new voice actor for Bryan didn't even try.

Reception.

The game received generally positive reviews. Critics praised the visuals and the new fight mechanics but had mixed opinions about the handling of the Scenario Campaign. Nevertheless, the PSP port was also well-received for how faithful it was to the initial console versions.
