Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is a fighting game published and developed by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It was released for the arcades in 2011, and then for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 a year later in September, followed by a Wii U port 2 months later.
It is a sequel to the original Tekken Tag Tournament, a spin-off in the Tekken franchise that was released for the arcades and then the PlayStation 2 in 2000.
Why It Rocks
- Like its predecessor, this game continues the fun and addicting two-on-two tag-team formula that keeps you playing over and over again.
- The roster features all of the characters (except for Gon and Azazel) who have appeared in the mainline series, including newcomers at the time like Jinpachi Mishima (Incredibly nerfed to make him playable unlike his boss fight in Tekken 5), Christie Monteiro, Bob, and Lars Alexanderson.
- Devil and Kazuya are now one character and you can switch between them anytime.
- The customization from the 5th and 6th mainline games returns and has some new features such as decals and shading a color scheme of a certain part of an equipped item to your liking.
- The stages are very lively and really cool to look at, including Snoop Dogg's DLC stage.
- Unlike Tekken 6, you no longer need to continue playing the game online to have your rank advance further beyond 1st Dan.
- The graphics are absolutely stunning, and most of the characters look like they do in their promotional renders, the color palette is insanely good and very vivid, You would even want to look at them for so long by just playing the game for a long hours, or even watching videos and stopping them on YouTube just to look at them, to the point that this game is often considered one of the best-looking games for consoles, especially on the Wii U and PlayStation 3 versions.
- The Wii U Edition includes not only all the DLC (except Lili's skirt) for free, but also some additional content such as Tekken Ball, Tekken Supporters, and some Nintendo-themed stuff like the costumes based off of Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Star Fox, and F-Zero.
- Lots of entertaining Arcade Mode endings and a lot of them are reminiscent to what characters would actually do in the Tekken universe.
- There is a mode where you get to play as one of Mr. Violet's android and each mission you complete in it will unlock more customization parts and more moves for the character.
- With some minor exceptions due to their background such as Xiaoyu, all characters now speak their native language.
- Some of the characters have special pre-quotes when talking to their own partners, like if Heihachi is Jinpachi's partner, the latter will say "Why must I be paired with the likes of you?".
- This is the first game in the series to have characters in their swimsuits as customization options, especially the female characters like Lili, whose bikini is considered to be the most popular in the whole game.
- The characters also have special win poses depending on whom they're paired with, like Nina kicking her sister, Anna, after they win a battle.
- This game reveals the identity of Unknown, the final boss from its predecessor, and it is revealed that she is the possessed form of Jun Kazama, mother of Jin Kazama and wife of Kazuya Mishima.
- Characters can have more than two outfits now, whether it's a secret outfit or because of customization, on top of that you can select which outfit you want instead of pressing a certain button.
- The soundtrack is very catchy and memorable composed by Akitaka Tohyama, Nobuyoshi Sano, Keiichi Okabe and more, just like the mainline games in the series, especially Snoop Dogg songs. It would make you want to try to get it to your head or play the levels longer to listen to the music, or even go to YouTube and download the music on your computer, phone or tablet.
- You'll earn a lot more money to buy customization regardless of mode than you could in the previous Tekken game since you would only recieve a small amount of it except for Scenario Campaign in that game, on top of that some of the customization features add new moves, such as the grenade.
- Unknown is a much more balanced final boss than the previous final bosses from the last 2 installments in the series, and in her playable form, some of her moves were removed in order to prevent her from being overpowered.
- You can not only have a partner fight by your side, but you can also engage in battles solo.
Bad Qualities
- Like Tekken 6, you can unlock endings without having to go through Arcade Mode, which would make playing said mode somewhat pointless.
- The customization was also dumbed down because you can no longer customize the hands and feet separately and you can't sell any of the items you bought anymore.
- False Advertising: despite being featured in the 4th panels of characters in customization mode, almost none of the costumes featured in the artwork by Shunya Yamashita in those panels are made available in-game.
- Depending on your point of view. This game can be too hard for some people. While Tekken games have always been hard. This game extends its difficulty to a ridiculous level.
- This game is basically Tekken 6, (Which is already complicated to begin with) add the Tag mechanic, and throw 59 characters to it, which forces you to learn the matchup of 2 characters.
- Not to mention. The most beginner-friendly characters, like Xiaoyu, Law, and Eddy, got a clone which is completely unfair for the people who play more technical-execution heavy characters.
- Like the past two games, the second player still can't select any of the customized outfits for the character in VS. Mode.
- This game almost killed the Tekken franchise by being the second worst selling Tekken games ever with only topped of by the original.
Trivia
- This is the first game in the whole franchise to be released on a home Nintendo console, not counting the prior spinoffs that were released for the Game Boy Advance and the Nintendo 3DS, respectively, since those were handheld systems.
- If you pair Jin Kazama with Devil Jin, you'll only see one or the other in the pre-fight intros, and after you win a match, one will transform into the other; Kazuya and Devil did the same thing in the first Tekken Tag Tournament game.
