The Boondocks is an American adult animated sitcom on Cartoon Network's late-night programming block, Adult Swim. Created by Aaron McGruder, based on his comic strip of the same name. It ran from November 6, 2005, and ended on June 23, 2014.
Plot
The show centers around a dysfunctional black family, the Freemans, settling into the fictional, friendly, and overall white suburb of Woodcrest.
Why Is The Stone That the Builder Refused
- It is very faithful to the comic it's based on since it is created by the same author "Aaron McGruder".
- It cleverly satirizes real-life events, stereotypes, politics, social issues, and pop culture that makes the show both entertaining and relatable.
- Great animation that matches the comic book and anime style. Not only that but the animation improves in the following seasons after the first one as it looks like an actual anime.
- Memorable characters such as:
- Huey
- Riley
- Grandad
- Tom Dubios
- Sarah Dubios
- Uncle Ruckus
- A plethora of funny and compelling side characters such as:
- Cindy
- Janet
- Colonel Stinkmeaner
- Jazmine
- Weggie Rudlin
- Hilarious black humor.
- It handles dark subject matter such as 9/11 and racism pretty well.
- Amazing voice acting by Regina King, the late John Witherspoon, Gary Anthony Williams, Cedric Yarbrough, and Jill Talley.
- The side characters also have great voice acting by Tara Strong and Candi Milo.
- It delivers important life lessons that the world is a tough place and that nobody is perfect.
- Funny and memorable dialogues such as:
- You never tell white people the truth! Hell, I'mma go find a white man to lie to right now!
- Could you say that again? I couldn't hear you over the sound of me shittin' myself.
- Amazing and well-choreographed action sequences.
- The theme song, especially in the second season, is incredibly catchy.
- Lots of funny scenes such as Thugnificient's diss on Robert, A Pimp Named Slick Back's introduction, Grandad pulling out his belt, etc.
- The unaired pilot teaser is surprisingly interesting and the art style for the teaser matches exactly like the comic strips faithfully.
- There are many hilarious and great episodes such as Smokin' with Cigarettes
- It is one of the very rare shows on Adult Swim to have a Japanese dub. Just like Rick and Morty.
- The season 3 finale, "It's Goin' Down", would be truly a decent way and a much better finale to end the series on a fair note, only if it hadn't got revived for another season in 2014.
Bad Qualities
- Michael Caesar, a character from the original comic strip, sadly never appeared on the show so far. According to Aaron McGruder this is because they never found the right actor/actress to do Caesar's voice, Instead Caesar is replaced by Cairo who is also Huey's best friend.
- The show can sometimes get mean-spirited.
- Season 4, the final season, was made without McGruder's involvement, and as a result, was poorly received due to a plethora of reasons listed here.
Reception
The first 3 seasons of The Boondocks were highly received, however the same cannot be said about season 4, which was received very negatively.
