The Boondocks is an American adult animated sitcom on Cartoon Network's late-night programming block, Adult Swim. Created by Aaron McGruder, based upon his comic strip of the same name. It ran from November 6, 2005 and ended on June 23, 2014. While the first 3 seasons were positively received, the same cannot be said about Season 4, which is on this wiki for the reasons explained below.
Plot
The show centers around a dysfunctional black family, the Freemans, settling into the fictional, friendly, and overall white suburb of Woodcrest.
Why This Season Isn't The Stone That The Builder Refused
- The main problem with this season is the fact that Aaron McGruder intentionally had no involvement with this season, as he was making plans for the first season of the live-action religious sitcom Black Jesus, airing on the same network.
- Instead of focusing on Huey Freeman, who is literally the main character, this season now focuses more on Robert Freeman as the main protagonist. While Robert is one of the main characters, this decision makes no sense.
- Some of the characters from the previous seasons are forgotten such as: Janet, Cindy, Gin Rummy, Thugnificent and Gangstalicious.
- The writing has gone from funny and creative to dull and boring as most of the plots of this season is mostly Robert going into different situations, such as losing money and becoming a slave.
- Uncle Ruckus has been badly flanderized. He went from a self-hating racist but funny man with a heart of gold and a sad backstory to an annoying, unfunny, jerkass character, it's so severe to the point where he became the main antagonist of the show.
- This season is extremely rushed as it only aired for 2 months and lasted for 10 episodes which is lackluster compared to previous seasons which had more episodes.
- The decision to bring back Colonel Stinkmeaner is unnecessary and weird, as he was killed of twice, first in season one and second in season two.
- This season has little to no actual political-social commentary, real satire, or any of the insights you'd normally expect from this show.
- It focuses more on relationships, with Kim Kardashian even making an unnecessary guest appearance.
- The humor you would expect from the previous seasons is non-existent, and some that are, they mostly come off as rather awkward and forgettable.
- The series finale, "The New Black", was a truly bad way to end the series.
- This season pretty much killed off Adelaide Productions as Sony Pictures Television's animation division, as the studio did not produce any new shows after the series ended (not helped out by the fact that they haven't even produced any new shows since the short-lived American adaptation of Sit Down, Shut Up, which came out in 2009, 5 years before this season, leaving The Boondocks their only remaining production at the time). Not to mention, Sony Pictures Animation (which was working on a reboot of the series before it was cancelled) and Silvergate Media (after SPT acquired the company in 2019) have since taken over Adelaide's duties of producing animated television shows, leaving Adelaide dormant ever since. The decline was so severe that most people take this season as non-canon.
Redeeming Qualities
- The animation is really good and is a major improvement over the previous seasons as it now looks like an actual anime.
- The Freeman family is still likable as usual.
- The intro is still good.
- The voice acting is great as usual
- There are some good episodes scuh as "I Dream of Siri", "Freedomland" and "Freedom Ride or Die".
- There are still a good amount of funny moments here and there.
- There are still a huge number of memorable and well done action scenes.
Reception
Although the show's first three seasons were met with positive reception. Season 4 was met with enormous negative reviews from fans and critics alike. It received a 38% "rotten" rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 45% audience score.
