The Boss Maybe is the second episode (third in production order) of the fifth season, and the two-hundred and first episode of The Loud House.
Plot
Leni, the oldest in the house, struggles to follow in Lori's footsteps as the family's babysitter.
Synopsis
At the mall, Leni does her job at Reininger's. After helping out Scoots, Ms. Carmichael tells Leni to come to the break room. Upon entering, Leni is greeted by a cake on the table and Ms. Carmichael announces that Leni has been named employee of the month, where Miguel and Fiona congratulate her. Later, Rita arrives to pick up Leni. As the two head home, Leni tells Rita of her accomplishment, and Rita, saying how proud she is, asks if she's up for the task of babysitting her siblings, since she and Lynn Sr. are going to a Renaissance fair and Lori is in college. Despite having doubts, Leni is assured that she'll do fine.
At the Loud House, Rita and Lynn Sr., wearing Renaissance outfits, and Lily, wearing a knight's helmet, depart for the fair. The moment the three leave, Leni is suddenly bombarded by problems she must solve, such as Lynn and Lola fighting over a dollar, Lana being sprayed by a skunk, and Lucy putting a spleen (unknown if from a human or animal) in the fridge. Leni becomes so overwhelmed by the number of problems, that she freezes from shock. When Lola comments that Lori would've solved their problems easily, Leni regains consciousness and realizes that Lori might help her.
Calling up Lori, who is busy at Fairway University, Leni asks for her help and Lori reluctantly agrees. Using advice from Lori, Leni solves the feud between Lynn and Lola by splitting the dollar in half (by literally cutting it in half with a pair of scissors) and giving Lana a tomato soup bath to get rid of her stink. When Leni asks if she can relax, Luna says that Luan turned their room into a comedy club. Calling up Lori again for more advice, Leni, wearing a firefighter's outfit, tells the visitors to leave, saying that the building is in over-capacity. The moment the visitors leave, Lincoln and Clyde ask Leni if they could watch a scary movie and take Leni's act of freezing as a yes. Leni tries to call Lori for more help, but because she called during the middle of a class lecture, Lori's phone is confiscated by her professor, leaving Leni to solve problems on her own.
When more problems break out, Leni exits the house to scream out her frustrations. Suddenly, Mr. Grouse comments what's going on in the house, since their antics have distracted him long enough for him to damage his garden. When Leni tells him that she's trying to keep it under control, Lincoln tells Leni that the internet is out. When Mr. Grouse tells them the correct way to fix it, Leni discovers that Mr. Grouse could help her.
After fixing up the wi-fi router, Leni continues to ask for Mr. Grouse's help, as he helps her bulldoze some sand Lynn brought home for volleyball practice out of the house. However, the problems continue to arise, as Mr. Grouse takes a nap in the living room, Lisa making a corrosive fruit punch that burns a hole in the floor which Mr. Grouse falls into, Luna turning her and Luan's room into a rock club, Lucy needing help cleaning blood, and Lincoln and Clyde being too scared to turn the movie off. Completely overwhelmed, Leni runs off to a corner of the house to escape the madness. Suddenly, she gets a call from Fiona and Miguel asking if she wants to join them at the spa. When Leni declines, saying that she can't get her siblings under control, they tell her that she should use her store sense to solve their problems, like treat the siblings as customers. Taking her friends' advice, Leni orders her siblings to form a line and she'll solve their problems one at a time. She manages to stop Lisa's fruit punch from preventing more corrosive damage, reads a children's book to Lincoln and Clyde to calm them down, shuts down Luna's rock club, gives Lynn and Lola $5 each, and tells the skunk about to stink up Lana to leave.
The moment Leni finishes all the tasks, Rita, Lynn Sr. and Lily arrive back home, much earlier than usual, as Lynn Sr. states that the Renaissance fair is vegan-only (which they weren't informed of), and since they brought only meat, they couldn't stay long. Rita is impressed that Leni was able to keep the house intact (albeit with one giant hole in the living room). Lynn Sr. rewards her with a leg of mutton, whom she gives to Mr. Grouse, who is still stuck in the hole.
Why Leni Makes a Great Big Sister
- The premise for this episode was good.
- The plot for this episode was also good.
- Leni, Lori, Fiona, Miguel, Lynn Sr., Rita, Ms. Carmichael, and Mr. Grouse's roles were all great.
- The humor for this episode was good.
- A way better Leni episode after Season 4's "Don't You Fore-Get About Me" and Season 5's "Schooled!".
- Great ending: Leni's dad rewards Leni with a leg of mutton, whom she gives to her neighbor Mr. Grouse, who was still stuck in the hole.
- The moral for this episode was also great.
- Like said before, this is a way better babysitting episode than Season 1's "No Guts, No Glori" and Season 3's "Sitting Bull."
- Despite Lucy and Lola being two of the Loud siblings to cause chaos in the Loud house, they managed to help Leni on calling Lori, so she can take some advice from her on how to deal with the chaos in the Loud house like how Lori used to.
- This is one of the most memorable episodes of Season 5 of The Loud House.
The Only Bad Quality
- The Loud siblings (except for Lori, Leni, Lily, and (somehow) Lucy and Lola) and Clyde were unlikable for causing a lot of chaos in the Loud house, which caused Leni to become really overwhelmed and stressed out on solving everyone's problems in the house and had to call Lori for help. (Even the teenager siblings, Lynn, Luan and Luna)
Trivia
- This episode has similar premises to:
- The Season 1 episode "No Guts, No Glori", as both episodes involve chaos caused by another sibling babysitting other siblings instead of Lori. Both episodes are also the third episode of their respective seasons.
- The Season 4 episode "Leader of the Rack", as both episodes focus on Leni trying to be a cool leader and facing chaos until Fiona and Miguel help her. Additionally, in both episodes, Leni is a passenger of Vanzilla, with the driver comforting her.
- The fight cloud on the title card resembles the fight cloud on the title card in "Brawl in the Family".
- Lincoln appears on the title card by one of his legs popping out of the fight cloud.
- The joke of Leni cutting a dollar bill Lynn and Lola were fighting for in half is similar to Lincoln cutting a jump rope Lana and Lola were fighting for in half in "A Tale of Two Tables".
- Lynn had brought sand into the house to practice beach ball, which is similar to how she in "No Guts, No Glori", brought dirt to the house to drive dirt bike.
- Like in "No Guts, No Glori", Lisa caused an experimental explosion and even looked exactly the same after this.
- Lincoln and Clyde getting traumatized after watching a horror movie is similar to "The Price of Admission".
- Mr. Grouse's IT knowledge from "Job Insecurity" is shown in this episode.
- This episode reveals that whenever Leni is in over her head, she becomes immobilized by shock.
- Mr. Grouse is revealed to have taken part in Veteran's Day parades, indicating that he is a war veteran.
- This is the first episode where Scoots' eyes are shown.
- Lynn Sr. breaks the fourth wall when his arm gets stuck in Leni's thought bubble after it popped.
- Innuendo: When Lucy asks Leni how to get blood off the ceiling, she quickly attempts to cover her words by saying that she meant to say "ketchup."
- Irony: Luna and Luan wanted to turn their room into some kind of performance, much to each other's chagrin. Both ended up having their shows being shut down by Leni.
International Edits
- Lucy's aforementioned ketchup innuendo was removed in the British and Irish airing.
References
- The Boss Maybe - The title of this episode is a pun of the 2017 DreamWorks Animation film The Boss Baby, based on the book of the same name.
- Bing Crosby - Mr. Grouse mentions this performer while screaming at the Louds.
- Rango - Leni gets immobilized by shock like character called "Bean" in the movie "Rango".
Errors
- In the title card, Leni's frills are down, when normally, they are up.
- When Leni, Miguel, and Fiona were eating the congratulatory cake, Miguel and Fiona were seen eating a piece of the cake, even though the cake has only one slice taken off.
- When Lucy was putting the spleen in the fridge, her right ear was missing.
- Possible plot hole: Lincoln and Clyde got terrified after watching a horror movie, but in "Last Loud on Earth" they enjoyed binge-watching zombie movies. However, it could just be a case of some horror movies scaring the boys, but not others.
- Possible: When Lincoln asks Leni for permission to watch a horror movie with Clyde, he refers to it as "The Disemboweling". However, the title of the film when displayed on-screen is "The Disemboweler". It is likely that he got confused and told her the wrong title. In addition, the closed captions say "Claude," instead of "Clyde."
- When Rita says, "I knew no job would be too big for my employee of the month," the closed captions read "I knew no job would be too big for me employee of the month."
