The Fall Guy is a 2024 American action comedy film directed by David Leitch and written by Drew Pearce, loosely based on the 1980s TV series about stunt performers.
Plot
When movie star Tom Ryder goes missing, stuntman and the director's ex-boyfriend Colt Seavers sets off to search for him. Along the way, he uncovers a conspiracy.
Why It Gets Back Up
- The film is a love letter to stunt performers.
- Before the start of the film, director David Leitch (who previously worked on Deadpool 2 and Bullet Train) and Ryan Gosling thanked viewers for watching this movie along with showing huge support for stunt coordinators and performers, crew members that are often overlooked in filmmaking.
- The film opens with a montage of stunts performed in various movies.
- At the credits, behind-the-scenes footage shows real stuntmen and coordinators filming the action scenes.
- This film also broke the world record for most cannon rolls in a car. Eight and a half rolls in this film compared to the previous record holder Casino Royale's seven rolls.
- Thanks to the amazing amount of stunts, the action scenes are great, like the truck chase when Alma gets kidnapped by Tom's henchmen, the filming of Colt's cannon rolls, and the final battle between Colt, Tom, and Gail on a helicopter.
- Ryan Gosling (who portrayed Ken in Barbie) and Emily Blunt offer great performances.
- Hilarious moments such as Colt failing to scan a hotel keycard, Tom's dog biting Tom's henchmen in the groin, a post-it note saying "Why is Chinese Chicken orange?", Colt hallucinating a unicorn when he's high on drugs, and Tom blowing himself up.
- Explaining the Chinese Chicken being an orange joke is that the sauce used on Chinese Chicken has orange and lemon flavoring with water, spices, and soy sauce. So apparently, Chinese Chicken is not orange.
- Great pacing.
- Good cinematography by Jonathan Sela since the camera shots make the stunts feel intense.
- It pokes fun at AI ruining the industry, which plays a role in the main plot in framing Colt for murder.
- Amazing sets and special effects, all helped by using stunts instead of CGI.
- Great direction from David Leitch.
- The creators of The Fall Guy television series, Lee Majors and Heather Thomas cameo as police officers arresting Tom and Gail, and it's hilarious as well as glorious.
Fallen Qualities
- Iggy gets off scot-free of her crimes, despite being involved with framing Colt for murder.
- Would you expect Colt to die when he rams into a tanker when it's clear that he's a stunt performer and there are still thirty minutes of the movie left?
