The Good Place is an American fantasy sitcom created by Michael Schur (who also created The Office, Parks and Recreation, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine). It has received critical acclaim much like Michael Schur's other shows.
Summary
The show follows Eleanor Shellstrop, who, after dying in a freak accident, goes to "The Good Place". However, she does not believe she deserves to be there, so she enlists the help of another resident, and they soon discover not everything is as it seems.
Why It's In The Good Place
- The lore and worldbuilding of the series is incredibly creative, and it incorporates multiple different elements from several different religions.
- The show's humor is very clever and well-done, and is inspired by the many absurdities of life.
- The characters are all very well written:
- Eleanor is an anti-hero type who gradually learns to become a better person.
- Chidi is Eleanor's neighbor and eventual boyfriend, who is very bad at making decisions but knows a lot about philosophy.
- Tahani is a socialite and the sister of a famous rock singer who grew tired of living in her sister's shadow.
- Jason is a dim-witted and lazy slacker type who, like Eleanor, believes he ended up in The Good Place by mistake.
- Janet is a personal assistant who helps the gang out, and also has counterparts in The Bad Place and The Neutral Place.
- Michael is a demon who wanted to create a prototype version of The Bad Place using the four main human characters, and gradually grows to resent being a demon.
- Many of the heroes and villains in the afterlife are also very cleverly written, and are different than what you would expect from such characters.
- The show's pacing is well-done, as the show is full of twists and turns that will keep the viewer interested and engaged, and it wraps up very nicely at the end.
- The show's exploration of morality and the afterlife is incredibly well-done.
- The acting performances are all top-notch.
- The shows's visuals and set design are all very creative and elaborate.
Bad Place Qualities
- There are a few weak episodes.
- Brent Norwalk (one of the new Bad Place residents in Season 4) is an unlikeable character as he is shown to be bigoted and entitled.
- The finale has a major plot hole: Michael requests to be a human, so he is stripped of his demon-hood and sent to Earth, however he is not given any sort of preparation beforehand, as well as without any money or even identification, and is sent there in the form of an old man, which means he missed being able to experience most of the human experience.
Reception
The series has received critical acclaim. It has an 8.2/10 on IMDb.
Trivia
- Michael's desire to be a human is seen by many fans as an allegory for being transgender.
