The Grim Adventures of the Kids Next Door is a half-hour TV special featuring a crossover between Codename: Kids Next Door and The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy. It's an official episode of the former show.

ASSIMILATE Qualities

  1. Awful grasp on its two source materials, Codename: Kids Next Door and The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy.
  2. Lazy premise: Billy accidentally gets Grim's scythe stuck on his dad's lucky pants, so he requests help from the Kids Next Door gang (Sector V) to get it removed before his dad returns home. It could have been a way better premise than that.
  3. The Delightful Children from Down the Lane are the "main antagonists", yet they barely serve any real purpose other than to be filler and the creation of the Delightful Reaper.
  4. The "jump-the-shark" moment is when Mandy was made as the secondary antagonist, if not the actual true antagonist, of the special.
    • In the actual show, Mandy is undeniably an irritating bossy boots who tended to mistreat Grim and Billy whenever she had the opportunity. However, at least she was generally tolerable as a character because she was much laidback and calm regardless of her cynical and gothic attitude. In addition, she had a handful of genuine moments where she cared for Billy and Grim and treated them as an equal, and also had moments where she feared either Billy or Grim whenever one or the other or both were pushed beyond their breaking points, so that their dynamic is well balanced out. In this special, she is flanderized so badly by reaching infinity, where she is casted as a full-blown unlikable evil, power-hungry villain with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. She not only confronts and holds Numbuh 1 hostage, but she also impersonates Numbuh 1 to take over the entire Kids Next Door organization and rule the universe while imprisoning Numbuh 1 along with Grim so that neither of the two would interfere with her actions. It does not end there just yet, but once she later confronts the Delightful Reaper during the battle against Numbuh 1 and Grim, she fuses with it just for greater power, rather than join forces with Grim and Numbuh 1 to take down the Delightful Reaper, thus, officially ruining Mandy's entire character.
    • Likewise, while not so much as Mandy, Billy is also unlikable in this special as he disobeys his father, Harold, who told him not to touch his lucky pants and he does it anyway, thus setting up the events of the special in the first place. The worst part about this is that he later idiotically mistakes the Delightful Children's machine for a bathroom, causing him and the Delightful Children to fuse together for the creation of the Delightful Reaper, thus, making it seem more like he, too, was the actual true villain alongside Mandy. Although to be fair, Billy did not intentionally know and wasn't properly paying attention because he was in such a rush to use a bathroom, but still.
  5. Awful portrayal of a handful of the Codename: Kids Next Door characters, namely Numbuhs 3, 4, and 362, who are nothing but pure idiots because they mistake Mandy for Numbuh 1. Does she even look like Numbuh 1? Likewise, both Grim and Harold mistake Numbuh 1 for Billy.
    • Numbuh 362 is especially out of character because she's the supreme leader of the Kids Next Door organization and thus is supposed to be the most intelligent character.
  6. Numbuh 1 gets treated unfairly throughout the special due to him disguising himself as Billy and gets held hostage along with Grim by Mandy just so she can become the leader of the entire Kids Next Door organization and rule the world. Not only that, but at the end of the special, Numbuh 1 gets punished by Billy's dad, Harold, who obliviously mistakes him for Billy. Not only that, but Numbuhs 3 and 362 also mistaken Numbuh 1 for Billy as well, after Numbuh 1 is dragged away by Harold. Like seriously?!
  7. As usual, both Billy and Mandy don’t get punished for their actions in the end and get off scot-free, making them Karma Houdinis. However, Billy does get various items including Grim's scythe thrown at him by the Kids Next Door.
  8. Plot holes:
    • How did Harold make his way into the Kids Next Door Headquarters? The base is on the moon so Harold couldn't make it there by foot and he's an adult, so the KND would not have allowed him to enter into the base to begin with.
    • It's also unexplained why many Codename: Kids Next Door characters are present on Endsville out of nowhere if they weren't even involved in Sector V's mission.

Good Qualities

  1. Numbuh 1, Grim, and Numbuh 5 are at their best and smartest, even Grim doesn't get abused that much in this special.
    • As mentioned in BQ#5, Numbuh 5 is the only Kids Next Door character who is aware that Mandy looks and sounds nothing like Numbuh 1.
  2. The intro and outro sequences for the crossover are awesome.
  3. Some of the cameos and references to other Cartoon Network shows are admittedly cool such as Ed, Edd n Eddy's cameo and the other Cartoon Network characters popping out of the Delightful Reaper.
  4. Both Numbuh 362 and Grim eventually realized their mistakes and realized that Mandy wasn't Numbuh 1 and that Numbuh 1 wasn't Billy, though it was too late by that point to do anything.
  5. At least Billy got his comeuppance at the end and was booed and assaulted by the other characters for all the problems he caused for not obeying his father in the first place.
