The Inbetweeners is a British coming-of-age teen sitcom that aired on E4 from 2008 to 2010 and it was created and written by Damon Wesley and Iain Morris.
Plot
The show follows 4 young adults who face misadventures with school life, sex, friendship, and lad culture.
Why It Goes "Wankers" (In a Good Way)
- Hilarious premise focusing on 4 young men facing problems with relationships, school life, male bonding, lad culture, and sex, but in a well-written execution.
- The show itself not only rehashes the live-action Mr. Bean show, but it has a different take due to the adult humor.
- The main characters are likable:
- Will McKenzie is the smartest member of the Inbetweeners, but gets humiliated whenever makes a big deal out of it by commenting on questionable acts. He also narrates most of the stories in all episodes.
- Simon Cooper is the hot-headed member of the 4 who is sensitive about his provocation, as well as his well-written on-and-off relationship with Carli.
- Jay Cartwright is immature and arrogant due to having the ability to lie things to others, specifically relying on sex, but his actions are hilarious.
- Neil Sutherland, despite ironically being the weakest member of the group, is confident in them.
- There are plenty of decent episodes, even though most of them are mean-spirited.
- Many of the quotes are hilarious such as: "Well that, was fucking dreadful" (which eventually became a meme), more specifically Jay's "BUS WANKERS" and Simon's "FUCK OFF!"
- Simon and Carli's relationship is good. However, their relationship ended in the first movie.
- It spawned 2 Inbetweeners movies, both of which are good.
"Fuck Off!" Qualities
- As mentioned before, Neil is the weakest member of the Inbetweeners since all he does is hinder the other members by making gross-out humor, like wetting Simon's car seats in "Caravan Club", urinating the bed and the room where Will is sleeping in "A Trip to Warwick", and his poop hit on Will's face in the 2nd movie.
- Will and Jay can be unlikable at times.
- Some bad episodes, even if they are hilarious to watch:
- Caravan Club
- A Night Out in London
- Will's Dilemma (especially the scene where Will breaks up with Kerry because of her height and answers back in public where he talks about Kerry's father dying)
- Camping Trip (although hilarious, it is a weak way to end the series)
- Some unlikable characters, such as Gilbert (though funny) and Mark Donovan.
- The gross-out humor can be off in many episodes, especially Neil's.
- Outside of Neil's gross-out humor, there are other gross-out humor like Simon vomiting on Carli's little brother, Jay bussing in a picture of a woman, which is an old woman in Duke of Edinburgh, Jay's big pimple in his earlobe after stabbing it using the earrings, etc.
- There are mean-spirited moments, even if the characters have justified behaviors.
- It got a bad 2012 remake by MTV.
Trivia
- It spawned an American show of the same name, but it received a critical reception and low ratings due to the lack of charm.
