The Krabby Kronicle is the second half of episode 9 of Season 6 in SpongeBob SquarePants, and is overall the 212th (213th if counting the lost episode, "The Sponge Who Could Fly") episode of the series.
Plot
When Mr. Krabs saw a newspaper that showed 25 cents per word, he had a plan to make money by creating a business called "The Krabby Kronicle". Spongebob becomes a photographer and finds some noteworthy stories (though he cannot find one), only for Mr. Krabs to tell him that he needs to use his imagination to create ideas.
Why Plankton Was Right About Mr. Krabs Being So Evil
- This episode reiterates the SpongeBob SquarePants book 'Stop the Presses!', substituting truthful gossip with fabricated misinformation.
- In "Stop the Presses," SpongeBob and Patrick create a newspaper featuring honest gossip about the characters. The townspeople become angry with them for exposing their secrets, leading SpongeBob to craft hats from the newspapers as peace offerings. Ultimately, they make amends, which contrasts with another episode where Mr. Krabs profits until his secret is exposed (Krabs Overworks Employee? Reaps Rewards?).
- Mr. Krabs is extremely unlikable, as he forces SpongeBob to compose false news about his acquaintances, including Mrs. Puff, Larry, Plankton, and Sandy, leading them to become very distressed. Despite SpongeBob's objections, Mr. Krabs further exacerbates the situation by threatening to confiscate SpongeBob's spatula if he refuses to comply.
- He is also to blame for inciting an angry mob, which causes considerable distress to many of SpongeBob's friends, Plankton being the exception.
- Mrs. Puff's Boating School is mistakenly associated with a "high-speed chase" despite Mrs. Puff merely being at a red light, with no actual pursuit by the motorcycle officer.
- Larry is expelled from gym class for merely "getting beaten up by a pipsqueak," despite the fact that it was Frankie who requested to punch Larry in the stomach as a test.
- The health inspector, Andy Yellowtail, closes the Chum Bucket upon discovering that the chum is made from "everyone's chums."
- The Neptunian Science Committee seizes all of Sandy's trophies following a headline that labels her as a "slow-witted squirrel," despite her being one of the most intelligent characters in the series.
- As a result, the citizens of Bikini Bottom are furious with Mr. Krabs for compelling SpongeBob to spread misinformation about them, leading them to demand a refund.
- He is also to blame for inciting an angry mob, which causes considerable distress to many of SpongeBob's friends, Plankton being the exception.
- Plot Holes:
- Mr. Krabs opens a newspaper dispenser and takes a newspaper without paying for it, but he is not apprehended for the act.
- He also counterfeits money stolen from the angry mob by replicating it in the machine, yet he remains unarrested.
- Mr. Krabs never berates/yells at SpongeBob for writing him up.
- This episode presents a contradiction to "Spongicus," where chum is not composed of fish but is instead made from whale blubber, seahorse snouts, jellyfish substance, and anchor rust.
- Bad Moral: It teaches people how to make false information in newspapers or articles as it encourages defamation, but in real life, people will get mad and prove that it is fake. Not to mention it is also against the law to be making up phony stories in the newspaper which could lead to the editor not only fired, but also the publisher to get arrested.
- Like in several episodes, Squidward serves no purpose in the plot, only for a single comment about the Krabby Kronicle's grand opening.
- In addition, Patrick also serves no purpose in the plot, other than watching a pole and ordering Krabby Patties (while getting married to a pole).
- This episode is a rehash of the Hey Arnold episode "The Big Scoop", because of Mr. Krabs forcing SpongeBob into writing lies about the citizens of Bikini Bottom, making that episode tame in comparison as Helga was exposed as a compulsive liar she was. And at the same time the that episode was done was handled much better then here.
- This episode marks the beginning of Larry the Lobster's flanderization to a cowardly loser as shown in a newspaper saying he was beaten up by a pipsqueak.
Redeeming Qualities
- The title card is unique, it has a blue animated background with a spinning newspaper reminiscent of "Emotion Commotion" and "The Masked Magician" from The Fairly OddParents.
- SpongeBob, Sandy, Mrs. Puff, Plankton, Larry, and Patrick are still likable characters in the episode.
- Plankton least felt sorry for SpongeBob when he didn't know that Mr. Krabs started forcing SpongeBob to give false information about him, Larry, Mrs. Puff, and Sandy (albeit offscreen).
- Unlike the sister episode, SpongeBob is not flanderized.
- The Bikini Bottom citizens are also likable as they call out Mr. Krabs for his actions.
- The scene where the angry mob returns their money from Mr. Krabs is satisfying, even though the latter steals one and copies it from the newspaper machine.
- There are funny and hilarious moments here and there in the episode "The Krabby Kronicle", including the following that you will most likely read on this article.
- The newspaper picture of Sandy eating the acorn is funny.
- Funny ending: After Mr. Krabs tells SpongeBob to bring scissors for the printed money (but you can't use those since the printed money is fake and counterfeit), Patrick (while wearing a tuxedo and holding a pole) asks both of them to order a couple of Krabby Patties, which causes the two to get surprised.
Trivia
- This is one of the few episodes where Plankton feels sorry for SpongeBob.
- This is also one of the few episodes with an animated title card.
- This is the only episode where the angry mob is actually in the right.
