Plot

When Mr. Krabs saw a newspaper that showed 25 cents per word, he had a plan to make money by creating a business called "The Krabby Kronicle". Spongebob becomes a photographer and finds some noteworthy stories (though he cannot find one), only for Mr. Krabs to tell him that he needs to use his imagination to create ideas.

Why Plankton Was Right About Mr. Krabs Being So Evil

  1. This episode is a rehash of the book, Stop the Presses!, but with bogus misinformation rather than truthful gossip.
    • In Stop the Presses, SpongeBob and Patrick make a newspaper about characters making truthful gossip. However, people are so mad at them for revealing their secrets, only for SpongeBob to make hats made of newspapers as gifts. At least they reform in the end, unlike this episode where Mr. Krabs has money until the truth is revealed (Krabs Overwork Employee? Reaps Rewards?).
  2. Mr. Krabs is extremely unlikable as he makes SpongeBob give out fake news about everyone including Mrs. Puff, Larry, Plankton, and Sandy, which causes them to get so upset, even though SpongeBob says it's wrong, and even worse, he blackmails SpongeBob by threatening to take away his spatula if he doesn't work.
    • It is also his fault for starting an angry mob in the first place, as he ruined many lives of all of SpongeBob's friends (except Plankton).
      • Mrs. Puff's Boating School becomes worn out after reading about a "high-speed chase", even though she was just at a red light and the motorcycle cop didn’t even pull her over.
      • Larry's gym teacher kicks Larry out for just "getting beaten up by a pipsqueak", even though Frankie asked to punch Larry in the stomach as a test.
      • The health inspector (Andy Yellowtail) shuts down the Chum Bucket after noticing that chums are made of "everyone's chums".
      • And the Neptunian Science Committee confiscated all Sandy's trophies after noticing that she is a "slow-witted squirrel" and acts like she's dumb when she acts like a normal human being like all the others.
    • Because of this, all of the Bikini Bottom citizens are so mad at Mr. Krabs for forcing SpongeBob to make misinformation about them, thus requesting refunds.
  3. Plot Holes:
    • Mr. Krabs opens a newspaper machine and steals one, yet he does not get arrested.
    • He also counterfeits stolen money from the angry mob, by copying it into the machine, yet he still did not get arrested.
    • SpongeBob makes the "wildest story" to the Bikini Bottomites, yet it is never explained how he gets that.
    • Mr. Krabs never berates/yells at SpongeBob for writing him up.
  4. This episode contradicts "Spongicus" where chums are not made of Plankton chums, but rather whale blubber, seahorse snouts, jellyfish material, and anchor rusts.
  5. Bad Moral: It teaches people how to make false information in newspapers or articles as it encourages defamation, but in real life, people will get mad and prove that it is fake. Not to mention it is also against the law to be making up phony stories in the newspaper which could lead to the editor not only fired, but also the publisher to get arrested.
  6. Like in several episodes, Squidward serves no purpose in the plot, only for a single comment about the Krabby Kronicle's grand opening.
    • In addition, Patrick also serves no purpose in the plot, other than watching a pole and ordering Krabby Patties (while getting married to a pole).
  7. This episode is a rehash of the Hey Arnold episode "The Big Scoop", because of Mr. Krabs forcing SpongeBob into writting lies about the citizens of Bikini Bottom, making that episode tame in comparison as Helga was exposed as a compulsive liar she was. And at the same time the that episode was done was handled much better then here.
  8. This episode marks the beginning of Larry the Lobster's flanderization to a cowardly loser as shown in a newspaper saying he was beaten up by a pipsqueak.
  9. Patrick had no purpose in this episode but filler.
  10. One of the most terrifying moments in the episode was where Sandy was being called Sandy Chump by SpongeBob who was her friend when she should know that was Mr. Krabs who did that to her and made her angry. Not to mention she should've beat-up Mr. Krabs for what he started with her karate moves. But sadly, that never happened until the Zeus Cervas' episode "Shopping List" which came out 10 years later in 2018.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. The title card is unique, it has a blue animated background with a spinning newspaper reminiscent of "Emotion Commotion" and "The Masked Magician" from The Fairly OddParents.
  2. SpongeBob, Sandy, Mrs. Puff, Plankton, Larry, and Patrick are still likable characters in the episode.
    • Plankton least felt sorry for SpongeBob when he didn't know that Mr. Krabs started forcing SpongeBob to give false information about him, Larry, Mrs. Puff, and Sandy (albeit offscreen).
    • Unlike the sister episode, SpongeBob is not flanderized.
    • The Bikini Bottom citizens are also likable as they call out Mr. Krabs for his actions.
  3. The scene where the angry mob returns their money from Mr. Krabs is satisfying, even though the latter steals one and copies it from the newspaper machine.
  4. There are funny and hilarious moments here and there in the episode "The Krabby Kronicle", including the following that you will most likely read on this article.
    • The newspaper picture of Sandy eating the acorn is funny.
    • Funny ending: After Mr. Krabs tells SpongeBob to bring scissors for the printed money (but you can't use those since the printed money is fake and counterfeit), Patrick (while wearing a tuxedo and holding a pole) asks both of them to order a couple of Krabby Patties, which causes the two to get surprised.

Trivia

  • This is one of the few episodes where Plankton feels sorry for SpongeBob.
  • This is also one of the few episodes with an animated title card.
  • This is the only episode where the angry mob is actually in the right.
