Summary

SpongeBob and Patrick embark on a quest to find a mythical drain that had once devastated Bikini Bottom.

Why It Went Down the Drain

  1. It's another installment from the "Legends of Bikini Bottom" mini-series, which has been criticized for being a significant ratings trap due to its misleading advertising and failure to fulfill its potential.
  2. The concept lacks originality, echoing "Hooky" from Season 1.
  3. Much of the episode is consumed by filler content, primarily consisting of SpongeBob and Patrick's prolonged search for the Main Drain. The actual journey occupies only a brief segment, as the episode predominantly spends time on conversations with Mr. Krabs, Plankton, and Old Man Jenkins.
  4. Mr. Krabs is upset with SpongeBob for trying to remove the drain plug in the Krusty Krab's kitchen sink. However, this anger is illogical since this drain plug is not the same as the one associated with the supposed apocalypse.
  5. Patrick's actions are quite irresponsible, persuading SpongeBob to yank the drain plug in the ocean's depths to test the theory of the Main Drain, despite the potential catastrophe for Bikini Bottom's inhabitants. It would be wiser to err on the side of caution and not remove it, considering the possibility that it could indeed be the Main Drain.
  6. The plot twist revealing Mr. Krabs and Plankton as the ones who originally pulled the plug on the Main Drain is quite illogical, considering it would be impossible for them to have survived, as they would have perished during the Main Drain apocalypse.
  7. The conclusion is extremely disappointing and feels like a huge letdown: Patrick inadvertently unplugs the Main Drain, causing everything in Bikini Bottom to be sucked away and the ocean to drain, only for it to be disclosed that it's just a bedtime story SpongeBob is narrating to Patrick.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Unlike some other "Legends of Bikini Bottom" episodes, this episode doesn't feature any disgusting or disturbing content.
  2. The revelation that this episode is a story narrated by SpongeBob makes it non-canon.

Reception

  • While not considered the worst among the "Legends of Bikini Bottom" episodes, "The Main Drain" has faced criticism for its filler content and lackluster ending.
  • Ranked 19th on the top 20 worst SpongeBob episodes fan edition list from MoBrosStudios.
