The Smurfs' Nightmare (also known as The Smurfs 3) is a game released for the Gameboy and Gameboy Color.

Plot

This time evil Gargamel casts an evil spell on the Smurf Village. All the sleeping Smurfs are trapped inside horrible nightmares. And you, brave Smurf, should go into their houses and rescue them. To enter the house you should have a key for it. Each house represents a different environment as well as different monsters and goals.

Why It Isn't A Nightmare

  1. For starter, the game was made by only two peoples, in a similar vein to Mr. Nutz, which make you wonder how they could have made a game this good with only two peoples working on it, but then again it was in the 90s, which was more impressive for it's time, since now doing a good game alone isn't as hard, and games like Undertales prove it.
  2. Tight and responsive controls, as your character will never feel unresponsive and the controls move in a fairly fluid way, even if the animation is slower than Travel the World on the Game Boy.
  3. Great graphics for it's time that still look good for today standards, with the sprite work being amazing, even the GBC version had decent colors choice, which isn't that great to look at in many GBC games unfortunately.
  4. Excellent level design that take advantages from Brave Smurf abilities and is well though, also the levels were designed to be balanced unlike the 16-bit game, as here it is not too hard nor too easy, and the level design is way better than in the PS1 Smurfs game (that was way too easy).
  5. The game still stay challenging without being too frustrating, at such, with pratices, you will be able to beat the game without much problems.
  6. Very good plot that resolve around all the Smurfs trapped inside nightmare when they sleep but the only one who didn't sleep was Brave Smurf so he need to save them and go to their nightmare to free them, even for The Smurfs standards, the plot is very original and unique.
  7. The game is fairly long for a 2D platformer, lasting 1h20m, which is impressive even for a Game Boy Color game, and the best thing about it is that it doesn't include padding.
  8. Awesome soundtrack which sound very catchy and even had a great rendition of the theme song of the show, even better is that the musics are not repetitive, and they are overall some of the best you can find on a Game Boy/Game Boy Color game.
  9. Cool looking cover art, having a good looking background and a Smurf (likely Brave Smurf) being trapped inside a possible nightmare.
  10. It is overall an even better game than the previous games on the Game Boy, because of being much more polished.

Bad Qualities

  1. The mini games aren't that great at times, especially because some of them are repetitive or doesn't control well.
  2. The game can still be frustrating at times, but even then it's not as frustrating as the 16-bits Smurfs games.

Trivia

  • The Smurfs Dreams can somewhat count as an homage to this game, because it had the same kind of plot.
  • This was the last Smurfs game to be released on Game Boy.
