The Wild Robot is a 2024 American animated science fiction survival film based on the book series of the same name by Peter Brown, produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures.
Plot
A robot is wrecked on an abandoned island and must survive while raising a young gosling.
Why It Gets A 10/10
- Excellent animation that almost rivals Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
- Impressive acting from Lupita Nyong'o, Pedro Pascal, Kit Conner, and of course, Mark Hamill.
- All of the characters are likable.
- Roz is an excellent mother figure to Brightbill, you can tell that she is doing anything to protect the animals from harm's way, such as building a shelter for them during a storm.
- Brightbill is an idealist who takes up the mantle as the geese's leader after Longneck's death.
- Fink may start wanting to eat Brightbill but later grows to defend him from other geese.
- Vontra is a great villain who still acts cheerful even when she gets crushed.
- The humor is great like Fink kicking Brightbill in the water to get him to swim.
- While the tone isn't as dark as in The Last Wish, there are still serious moments like when Brightbill finds out what happened to his family, Longneck's sacrifice, and Roz needing to let Brightbill migrate.
- Likewise, there are also heartwarming moments like the ending (which will be discussed below), the animals putting aside their differences to take shelter from the storm, and Roz teaching Brightbill how to fly.
- The climax in which Brightbill and the other forest critters save Roz from having her memories wiped by Vontra is amazing.
- Great soundtrack.
- The ending is incredibly emotional. Roz must leave to protect her forest friends with the promise of returning one day, but she and Brightbill still get to visit each other.
- After the disaster that was Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate, and the alright but not strong Kung Fu Panda 4 and Ruby Gillman, this film is a great return to form for DreamWorks, leading fans to be excited about their upcoming Dog Man movie.
Bad Qualities
- The plot is admittedly cliche, as it involves a simple robot who grows beyond its programming and an adopted child must accept a robot as its new mother, but the movie is so great that you wouldn't even care.
- Vontra doesn't get much screen time despite her being the main villain.
Reception
The Wild Robot received acclaim from critics and moviegoers, calling it the best DreamWorks Animated film since Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 97% of 154 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 8.5/10. The website's consensus reads: "A simple tale told with great sophistication, The Wild Robot is wondrous entertainment that dazzles the eye while filling your heart to the brim."
