Turns out Nickelodeon marketing it as a "special" was the least of the episode's problems.

To SquarePants or Not to SquarePants is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season six. In this episode, SpongeBob's laundry gets shrunk and he has to buy new pants.
Plot
When SpongeBob does his laundry, he forgets to check on it and his pants all shrink.
RoundPants Qualities
- False advertising: This episode was advertised as a "special", yet it’s a typical 11 minute episode. Also, what is so special about SpongeBob getting some round pants?
- The plot itself is incredibly dumb despite using a semi-decent concept.
- The way the episode starts with how "horrible" it was, stating that SpongeBob changed his pants, leading to some unnecessary and laughable drama. And you thought Shadow the Hedgehog tried too hard to be edgy.
- It is yet another SpongeBob torture episode.
- There is a pointless filler scene where Patrick makes a stupid noise on the phone, and SpongeBob doesn't even bother to hang up.
- Patrick is unlikable for claiming SpongeBob can't be the same person because his pants aren't square. He goes as far as forbidding SpongeBob from entering his own house.
- He's already known SpongeBob for a long, long time. It doesn't matter how stupid he is, he should know by now what he looks like.
- Because of this, Gary is upset and shrinks SpongeBob's pants just because he removed his snail shell for washing. How is this bad, considering that him removing Gary's snail shell is considered as part of his routine?
- He's already known SpongeBob for a long, long time. It doesn't matter how stupid he is, he should know by now what he looks like.
- Plot Hole: After SpongeBob hangs up on the phone and saw that his pants are too small, he should have scolded Gary after shoving all of his pants (while there is a snail shell in it) in the washing machine.
- After Gary puts all of SpongeBob's pants in the washing machine, he suddenly left and never comes back.
- Speaking of that, Gary is unlikable for putting all of SpongeBob's pants in the dryer, just because SpongeBob accidentally removed the shell and reveals his butt, thus making him a Karma Houdini.
- Gary, Sandy, Mr. Krabs, Patrick and Squidward have no purpose to the episode but filler.
- After Gary puts all of SpongeBob's pants in the washing machine, he suddenly left and never comes back.
- Pointless ending: Mr. Krabs tells SpongeBob to take his pants off and gets laughed at by Sandy, which causes the sponge to freak out in public.
- The title card for this episode was misleading as it says "To SquarePants or Not To", but with the same last name missing on the bottom of the title thanks to the way Amazon Prime Video had shortened the title card.
- This episode was not a good way to start the program on the 2009 DVD.
SquarePants Qualities
- "SpongeBob LongPants" in Season 9 has a similar concept to this episode, but is done far better than in this episode.
- Great concept, but although, the same can't be said about the execution.
- Squidward turns SpongeBob into a jerk at the Krusty Krab, presumably so that Mr. Krabs will get rid of him. One of the few good moments from this episode despite being your typical SpongeBob torture fest episode.
- "These pants hug my body... better than my own mother!"
- "Spongebob NoPants?"
Reception
- Much like its' sister episode, To SquarePants or Not to SquarePants received a 5.8/10 on IMDB.
- It was ranked 13 on the MoBrosStudios Top 20 Worst SpongeBob Episodes (Fan Edition).
Trivia
- To SquarePants or Not to SquarePants was the first episode of the Ultimate SpongeBob SpongeBash in 2009.
