Tom and Jerry is a 1993 platform game, developed by Riedel Software Productions and published by Hi Tech Expressions for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, while Altron published the game in Japan. It is based on the Tom and Jerry cartoon series.
Why It's Not Our Tom and Jerry
- While not the worst seen on SNES, the graphics look ugly and have terrible color choice. Even for a SNES game released in 1993, games like Battletoads in Battlemaniacs, Super Bomberman, Mega Man X, and Pac-Attack look better, and all of these come in the exact same year as this game.
- It's worth noting that the NES game looks much better than this game, and that was on an 8-bit console, and it's overall a much better game than this SNES version.
- The controls are abysmal, the double jump feature is extremly broken, you have to make it when you hit the ground, you have to press jump again to jump a bit higher, this can cause cheap death for no reason, and it's making you feel like an idiot. And when you jump on something that makes you bounce, it's even worse since you will press jump, but it won't jump higher, and you will have cheap death. It also doesn't help that in the international versions you have no continue.
- The soundtrack is extremely bland and generic, as it's only an 8-second loop, it's restarted, and there are only two tracks in the entire game. It also doesn't help that it's made some of the worst soundtracks in any Super Nintendo game ever made (except the theme song, of course, as it's been decently remixed on the SNES).
- The game is a bit unfaithful to the show as Tom barely appears in the game and he only appears when he fights a boss, and that's about it for his appearance; the rest don't seem to be something unfaithful to the show. And to make things worse, he is not a playable character, which is a missed opportunity for the game.
- The game is very short, taking about only 30 minutes to beat it, and there is little to no challenge. The only difficulty of the game is the cheap death, as it's a fake difficulty (see WINOTAJ#7).
- The boss fights are bland and crappy, as it is too easy (most of the time), and they are just here to padding the game length; they are also awful and uninspired.
- The game has a lot of fake difficulty due to the awful and awful controls; sometimes you need to be pixel perfect to go for platforming; it's so bad that it's made the game unplayable and just not fun. Even the NES Mega Man games have not as much cheap death, even if sometimes they can be too difficult.
- The level design is awful at best and extremely atrocious at worst, especially in World 3 where all the levels are full of pits and moving platforms, which can take a lot of time to master. Due to that, you can easily quit the game for this awful level design. Some of the levels can be too short and badly designed, such as the very first one, which makes a bad first impression.
- There is now fall damage; have they learned anything from the 2D Bubsy games on SNES, Sega Genesis, and Atari Jaguar?
- Horrible ending: After you make Tom take the rocket, he will fly to the moon and be harmed. This can show that Jerry is somehow the villain of the show (which depends on you), and comes across very out-of-character as while Jerry CAN be antagonistic at times (especially in the Gen Dutch-Era of the Tom and Jerry series), he never goes THAT far.
- It's almost comparable to Ed, Edd, and Eddy: Jawsbreakers! on GBA (which came out ten years later), which also had a horrible ending as well.
- The game over is extremely awful and is just a black screen with the game over and complete with a Jerry image, but he is not even depressed or something as he looks like he is smiling. It can also be insulting for the players who got a game over for stupid reasons and make them want to destroy the game.
- There is also no music playing, which makes kids even more scared.
- The international versions don't have any continue, so if you lose all your lives in these versions, you have to go back to the very beginning of the game, which is unacceptable because even the hard Game Boy and NES Tom and Jerry games have continues despite being limited.
- Terrible hit-box; the mobile platforms are the worst offender, as much like Fantasia on the Sega Genesis; they are glitchy and move horribly fast; it also doesn't help that the jump control is awful and stiff at the same time.
- This game feels more like an advertisement for the Tom and Jerry film than a cartoon, being that this was made the same year as that film's released.
Redeeming Qualities
- At least the Japanese version has a continue option, even if it's limited.
- It's still better than the awful Amiga game that was the first Tom & Jerry game; this SNES game is also an improvement over that dirty Tom & Jerry game.
Reception
The game receives mostly negative reviews from web rewiewers.
Trivia
- The game would almost have a sequel named Tom and Jerry: The Chase, but was cancelled due to the fact that High Tech Expression could publish cartoon games at the time, although there is a playable early-build version of the game.
- This is one of the few Tom and Jerry games where you can play as Tuffy; it wasn't until Fist of Fury on the Nintendo 64 in 2000 that he was playable again.
