Transformers: The Game is a third person shooter game based on the 2007 film Transformers. It was developed by Savage Entertainment and published by Activision for the Playstation Portable. The home console and PC versions were developed by Traveller's Tales and the DS version was developed by Vicarious Visions. It was released in June 2007, a month before the film's release. This page will cover the PSP version.
Why It's Not Made of Sterner Stuff
- Boring gameplay.
- Terribly unresponsive controls.
- Slow character movement, even if you're in vehicle mode. Also the cars have bad controlling.
- Horrible and repetitive sound effects that make combat feel incredibly awkward. One of them is even a stock laser beam sound effect.
- Outdated graphics that wouldn't be out of place from either a PS1 or a Sega Saturn game. For starters, all of the Transformers appear blocky, they have blurry textures, and their animations feel stiff. Even the DS Version looks better!
- The levels tend to feel very empty in the most awkward way possible, especially if you're fighting in the middle of what is supposed to be either a military base or a big city.
- Suffers from some bugs and glitches. For instance, in one cutscene that involves Barricade, it is possible for him to suddenly transform into vehicle mode in a split second.
- Despite certain characters have different strength, no matter who you be, certain enemies will take the same amount of damage.
- Everytime you fight a shield enemy you constantly have to throw something at them.
- If you liked Ratchet, Bonecrusher, Brawl and Shockwave, none of them are playable in single-player mode, except for Shockwave.
Redeeming Qualities
- The game has an awesome soundtrack courtesy of Steve Jablonsky, who also composed the film (and its sequels, including Revenge of the Fallen's own licensed game)'s soundtrack.
- Both Peter Cullen and Frank Welker reprise their iconic roles as Optimus Prime and Megatron, respectively.
- Not a big plus, but this version has multiplayer support unlike the console and PC versions.
Reception
The PSP port has received largely negative reviews from critics and players. It has a Metascore of 47 out of 100 in Metacritic, and a rating of 2.87/5 in GameFAQS (with two out of three of the reader reviews being negative). Alex Navarro of GameSpot gave the game a 4 out of 10, and said this regarding the game: "Envision the dullest possible game about giant robots beating one another up, and then find a way to make it even duller. That's Transformers in a nutshell."
