Plot

The Mallard family is in a bit of rut. While dad Mack is content to keep his family safe paddling around their New England pond forever, mom Pam is eager to shake things up and show their kids—teen son Dax and duckling daughter Gwen—the whole wide world. After a migrating duck family alights on their pond with thrilling tales of far-flung places, Pam persuades Mack to embark on a family trip, via New York City, to tropical Jamaica.

As the Mallards make their way south for the winter, their well-laid plans quickly go awry. The experience will inspire them to expand their horizons, open themselves up to new friends and accomplish more than they ever thought possible, while teaching them more about each other—and themselves—than they ever imagined.

Why It Will Fly Like A Bird And Migrate To The Bahamas

  1. The concept of a male bird whom his children want to fly to the Bahamas is a original concept and an interesting concept, especially for Illumination standards.
  2. Similar to media and movies such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Smurfs: The Lost Village, Sing 2 (coincidentally, both are also Universal Studios and Illumination movies), Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the Sonic the Hedgehog short "Sonic Drone Alone", Lightyear, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie (coincidentally, both are also Universal Studios movies, the fact that Keegan-Michael Key starred in that film as Toad, the fact this the movie has them going into the clouds and Mack says Mario's "What is this place?" line and the fact that the movie was released eight months prior to Migration on April 5, 2023), it has gorgeous and amazing animation that is extreamly comparable to that of The Super Mario Bros. Movie 's animation and shockingly is comparable to that of a live-action film, due to being animated by Illumination Mac Gruff, the same company for the rest of Illumination films, not to mention, believe it or not, the film, much like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, would take inspiration from Studio Ghibli, Astreix: The Secret of the Magic Potion, and Turning Red.
  3. Great voice acting, with names such as Kumail Nanjiani, Elizabeth Banks, Awkwafina, Keegan-Michael Key, David Mitchell, Carol Jane, and Danny DeVito (this is the second Illumination film to feature him following The Lorax and the fact that John Powers also returned to score this film and this is the third Illumination film featuring him) nailing it their roles and making great performances.
  4. The characters are all likable, such as:
    • Mack is the anxious dad of the Mallards, and his kids try to convince him to go on vacation. He decides to, and he and his family try to fly to the Bahamas.
    • Pam is the daring and quick-witted mother of the Mallards, and she wants to go on vacation
  5. The musical score by John Powers is pretty great.
  6. The directing by Benjamin Renner is pretty great.

Bad Qualities

  1. Much like almost all of Illumination movies, the backgrounds are reused at times, such as New York City, which is reused from The Secret Life of Pets and its sequel.
    • Much like almost all of Illumination movies, there is some toilet humor here and there, though it is actually hilarious.
