Why It Used To Deserve a Bowl of Spaghetti This series is one of the most influential machinima channels (and to this day) along with many others like RubberFruit, DasBoSchitt and the late Kitty0706. Great video editing and animations thanks to the use of the N64 emulator, Project 64 used for Super Mario 64 (as well as Mario Party 3 for the Wario, Waluigi, Donkey Kong and Daisy models and GoldenEye 007 for Chris and Swagmaster), Garry's Mod (despite the overuse of the game in later years) and Sony Vegas Pro. Instead of Mario being his normal happy-go-lucky self, SMG4 instead makes him a comic relief character. SMG4 also inserts himself as one of the main characters in the series, who is an accurate and faithful fictional representation of Luke Lerdwichagul himself. Like Disney, Looney Tunes, Hanna-Barbera, The Simpsons, Family Guy, South Park, Peppa Pig, SpongeBob SquarePants and DreamWorks, the series has made a huge ensemble of characters including some that are considered fan favorites such as: SMG4 himself Mario Bob Bobowski (originally in his debut, he started off as some kind of Scrappy-type (well written version) character to the gang, especially SMG4 who he always begs to put him in a video starring himself, or at the very least, have a main role to eventually getting his wish later on becoming one of the best characters of the series who's still apart of the gang to this day) Fishy Boopkins (same character development as Bob, since he went from an attention whore, begging people to be his friend to later becoming an official friend to SMG4, Mario and the whole gang) Meggy Spletzer (before becoming a creator's pet to the series during the downfall) Shroomy Chris and Swagmaster696969696969 SMG3 FightingMario54321 (FM for short) Nintendofan997/X Luigi Toad Bowser Wario Waluigi Professor E. Gadd (especially during 2016-2017 as he became a scene stealer done right) Sonic the Hedgehog Dr. Robotnik While certain other characters don't have as much main roles as the others, they are pretty great, and like The Amazing World of Gumball's later seasons, they get to have their own episodes most of the time and even when they don't, they're hysterical, yet memorable and likable as much as the main characters. These characters in question include running gag/joke characters such as: Steve Wizard Rock Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po (Who, like Mario, are portrayed as comic-reliefs and they're WAY better than their original counterparts. Especially Po) Old Man Hobo (who at one point served as a mascot for the bloopers before being overthrown by Mario, Meggy and the original characters in the post-2017 era) The Police Toast Guy Gourmet Guy Weegee Crazy Raisin Lady Mario Recolors Chain Chomp Frankie Ben Slendy Freddy Fazbear Chica Bonnie Foxy Balloon Boy William Afton Puppet Granny Koopa (Bowser's Grandma) As well as other Mario characters like: Yoshi Dr. Mario Donkey Kong Princess Daisy Rosalina Various Mario enemies Bowser Jr. Lakitu (despite being the first character to suffer from Chuck Cunningham Syndrome) Toadsworth (who has the most roles out of all the recurring Mario characters in the series, making him the closest thing to a main character behind Professor E. Gadd) It spawned many great spin-off series videos, with some of them serving as a staple to the series despite some on the other hand being short lived such as: War of the Fat Italians Ssenmodnar R****ded64 (R64 for short, despite being a little too similar to the main series' videos, until it's end in 2017 thanks to being targeted by YouTube's policy reasons) Stupid Mario (formerly apart of R****ded64) If Mario was in... The Wacky Wario Bros. Sonic the Derphog Guards N' R****ds Cooking with Bowser and Mario Super Pokeman 64 Meet the Cast It even had a spin off channel starring Mario titled; TheAwesomeMario, which originally started off as a fictional channel to later becoming a real thing in 2017 (despite it's huge missed potentional thanks to not even lasting a year), where it's not usually just shorts starring, well, Mario, but also (short lived) spin-offs of it's own, too such as: A Day in the Life Of... (Which explores the everyday lives of Mario's friends) Mario's EXTRAS (Which are "deleted scenes" of the main series' episodes that are usually uploaded a day after their release) Boopkins and Bob (Which stars the Spike and Garo on misadventure-centric plots) As well as three new (albiet in short form) Wacky Wario Bros. episodes and only one Guards N' R****ds episode. Had TheAwesomeMario still continued, the series would've had more episodes of them and other spin-offs left in the dust. The series has lots of funny sound effects used in the series, along with reused audio/voice clips from other shows, movies, games, anime and even song lyrics! These include but not limited to: "Mamaf*cker!" (This iconic voice clip of Mario is actually an edited combination between Mario saying "Mamamia!" from Mario Kart 64 and Mario saying "Fire!" and "Hammer!" from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga but with the a censor bleep placed between to make it sound like he's swearing) Anthony Padilla's scream (taken from the Smosh video, THAT DAMN PUNISHMENT!; used for certain characters like SMG4 himself) Squidward Tentacles' scream (taken from the SpongeBob SquarePants episode, Have You Seen This Snail?) "SHE'S A BITCH!" (taken from Tourettes Guy; usually said by Mario to describe what he really thinks about Princess Peach) Intentional "MAMAF*CKER!" Qualities NOTE: Please keep this in mind that SMG4 is an intentionally created webseries, so most of these pointers are meant to be bad. While still good as gold, 2016 and 2017 (the former not so much though) were when the series started to decline. Some people believe that 2016 might be this because of the debuts of Fishy Boopkins and Bob, many spin-offs were getting less episodes while If Mario was in... videos were getting more recognition, certain characters like the Mario recolors started to lose roles and Garry's Mod was starting to become used more often. Oh, and did we mention that it's home to one of the most infamous SMG4 episode of this entire era? 2017 is most especially this to some fans because of the debut of Meggy, who at first was only created just to balance out the SMG4 cast as they're mainly males, while other female characters like Peach only served as joke characters, and Shroomy, who's the first original character created for the series. And just before Meggy's introduction, the series became victim of YouTube's censorship policy meaning they are forced to tone down the edgy humor and ending R****ded64 after Mario's Boat Trip, shortening the title to "R64", and merging the tone of the series with the main series. Not only that, Garry's Mod started to become more used than before, more characters like SMG3 and Chris and Swag suffered from lack appearences, Ssenmodnar uploaded it's 12th and final episode while others that aren't If Mario was in... and Stupid Mario were nowhere to be found, while new ones either didn't even last a year or went dormant after even an episode or two (with only a couple of them getting one episode that year, another one in early-2018, and then ignored after that) such as The Mario Channel, Mushrooms & Morons, and the entirety of "TheAwesomeMario". Thankfully as repeated, these two years are the least of the series' problems. It would only get worse by the time the series' introduced more OC's and female characters to the cast... Just because the machinima's got a large cast of characters, doesn't mean it has no unlikable characters: Princess Peach is pretty much one of the worst characters of the whole series because of how she always gets angry easily, attacks and lashes out at everyone (most aimed at Mario) over her castle a mess or getting destroyed, being told no, or even just hearing the most slightest insults. She suffered from character derailment as her personality got more and more worse each year. Toadette is an abusive girlfriend towards Toad to the point where she's his biggest fear. Starman3 Enzo, starting around late 2013, went from a minor, yet good friend of SMG4, Mario and Starman3 to a crazed maniac who tried to get his murderous revenge on Mario all because he ruined his birthday. Villager is an insane psychopath who, like Enzo, tried to get revenge on Mario over a stupid reason, that of which in question being Tom Nook accidentally dropping his Doritos into the river. But unlike Enzo though, it wasn't even Mario's fault that he lost his Doritos in the first place. Even some of the other characters have problems with themselves, too: Lakitu just feels like a wasted potential character as he would've acted like some sort of a subconscious, a Hanna-Barbera tiny sidekick-esque character (such as Boo Boo Bear) or a backup straight man to Mario when SMG4 isn't by his side. Unfortunately, he would be the first to suffer from being out of focus after the first season. Pretty much a lot of the Mario recolors who aren't SMG4 and SMG3 such as FM, X and Starman3 don't have much to do other than being just background characters. FM and X in particular would've had their own series of videos as their own episode felt like a backdoor pilot. A lot of the show's side characters like Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa, Po, Steve, Old Man Hobo and Toast Shy Guy, while hilarious, don't have much personality traits than just being running gags aside from some episodes focusing on them. Toast Shy Guy acted out of character in "Mario Joins The Circus", because he just simped for Mario rather than siding with him, and when he saved him from the clowns, he doesn't say "you're welcome" to him. Instead, he ends the episode on a horrible note by dropping Mario into a giant toaster. Most of the other characters like Yoshi and Donkey Kong have very few episodes of their own. Meggy's first appearance wasn't welcomed with open arms, as the minute she came in, the minute fans begin hating her because of the series beginning to appeal to female SMG4 fans (which would soon become a never ending thing by the time SMG4 introduced us to Saiko). However, she's still a good character around then. However, by the time season 8 came around, she soon started having traits of her character becoming more of a spotlight stealer, and her Mary Sue status raising up a bit. But she's still likable around then, and wouldn't become flanderized to a straight up creator's pet until "Mario's Big Chungus Hunt". There are a lot of bad episodes here and there. Including: SMG4 Joins the YTR The Idea Block Mario Joins The Circus (the absolute worst SMG4 episode out of the classic era...well, it used to be THE worst, but not so worse as it is nowadays, but still) The series barely even credits where the source the sound effects and voice clips came from, forcing SMG4 fans to look for them themselves. This same thing applies to the music, too, up until SSENMODNAR DELUXE - 1 MILLION SUB SPECIAL, where they finally added it. Sadly, it didn't last too long once "Doki Doki Mario Club" removed it in favor of the membership perks list, putting fans back to square one. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, all is well here as everyone is living up to their everyday lives. What if we told you, it's all about to change? For you see, The Mushroom Kingdom's hero, Mario, is getting bored of his everyday life of rescuing princesses non-stop, as his brain has completely switched into becoming a meme machine with Spaghetti and other stuff. Until one day, things are about to expand even more, with a touch of humor. The Dumb Red Italian plumber, and his brother, Luigi, are about to meet a brand new class of funny, introducing: SMG4 and His Gang! Join them on their most ridiculous and most funniest adventures as they laugh, cry, and do lots and lots of memes. They might get into a few mishaps then and their, but they will always figure out how to get out of trouble or somewhat make it up in some way as they all learn at least some life lessons, the old meme fashion way. It's all fun and games until their world gets turned completely upside down, not even knowing that the vile dangerous sinister forces of evil from the shadows are planning to deliver massive loads of terrifying dire consequences. Qualities That Should Get Blasted By A Waluigi Launcher This era had lot of changes that make the SMG4 series slowly transform from one of the most influential machinima series of all time based on Super Mario 64 and Garry's Mod, to a completely different original webseries that has focused way less on the Mario franchise (or any other Nintendo franchise to some extent for that matter). The humor, thanks to the channel becoming verified and monetized, has started to become more too family friendly with its humor and writing being cartoony and too many elements from memes and anime (the latter especially because of the addition of original characters). There a lot of bad episodes (some might probably be worse than Mario Joins the Circus) such as: Doki Doki Mario Club (Which started the downfall of the series) Luigi's Lesson (which isn't a good way to officially put Saiko on the good side) If Mario Was In... Starfox (Starlink Battle For Atlas) Mario's Big Chungus Hunt (which not only started season 9/2019 on a mixed note, but is also where Meggy's flanderization began) Most of the Anime Arc episodes (which marked the introduction of Meggy's OC design. CEO OF RIZZ Mario’s Plane Trip PUZZLEVISON The Meme Wave Mini-Arc (MEME HUNTERS, SMG4 and the Meme Factory, Despicable Mr. Puzzles and A Night At SMG4's) I Put Mario In Danger For Views Mr Puzzles' Lowest Point Mr. Puzzles Clubhouse Welcome to Puzzle Park every War Of The Fat Italians installment post 2020 The sound effects and voice clips (while they are still great and hilarious to listen to) are now all over the place as there's barely even a single moment where there's nothing playing in the background, especially from Sr. Pelo and MetalKingBoo. While the voice acting is great, some of these voices like Elsie Lovelock as Meggy (2022-present), Saiko's voice clips (especially when she gets angry), Wolfychu as Melony, Hayley Nelson as Kirby, Robyn Barry-Cotter as SMG2 and Lottie Bourne as Tari (early 2024-present) can get pretty annoying and will get on your last nerves if you listened to them enough times. Speaking of which, SMG4 still hasn't pointed out or credited where the sound effects and voice clips came from, forcing SMG4 fans to look for them themselves. The pacing of the episodes has gone too fast for it's own good, making SMG4 fans rewind the video to see what's going on. 2019, 2021 and 2022 are considered the worst of these years: 2019 being the year where Meggy started to have more main roles than before and turning her into a human OC (in Final Hours), Toad and Bowser became the next victims of being put under the bus along with even more beloved fan favorites than before. The S word became the next profanity to get censored, only having two Stupid Mario episodes and one If Mario Was In... episode, and for having a few bad episodes like Boys vs Girls. 2021, although not as worse, is known for the death of Axol, the weakest of the War of the Fat Italians episodes, Garry's Mod becoming more overused than usual and using full voice lines and Uberduck more than voice clips and text. 2022 is the worst year of the bunch because it had too much episodes with Meggy, Saiko, Tari and Melony's roles shoved in the plot even moreso than previous years, the introduction of even more unwanted new characters like Karen, Depresso and Kaizo, and the decision of giving SMG4, SMG3, Boopkins and Bob redesigns, thus turning them into OC's themselves, more videos where PJ64 isn't used at all, the B word becoming censorship's next victim, and home to having the most worst episodes out of all the years in this downfall. These new seasons has made a non-stop trend where it introduces us to these new original characters who are completely out of place for an intentionally made webseries that's supposed to be based on the Mario franchise, but rather fit more into an original show instead. But even if you do pretend they came from an original show instead of SMG4, most of these characters can still come off as unlikable, annoying or (at best) divisive either way, such as: Saiko Bichitaru is an ax-crazy girlfriend brought to life by Boopkins who used to be one of the series villains, but the only problem is that she was only evil for three episodes (four if you count Mario's Jackass) and has quickly redeemed herself after that, which comes off as Half-Baked. Her post-Luigi's Lesson personality isn't any better either, as her character is basically the series equivalent to Teen Titans Go!'s version of Raven as she gets annoyed extremely easily by her allies and attacks them for even the slightest of insults, especially Mario and Bob, and nobody ever calls her out for it. Lately since 2021, she started to have a really creepy obsession with KFC. Her voice clips can also get on your last nerve, as her lines are voice clips from Japanese dubs. She barely even speaks english outside of text, nor does she even have a real voice actress unlike Meggy, Tari, Melony and Karen. Not to mention, that she was the one who sped up the show's decline in the first place as she was the first female OC created for the series, while it has been going down since season 7/2017, her inclusion made it even worse as she would pave the way for the series to make even more of these kinds of characters. Tari, despite being the most decent out of these characters, was only introduced to the series as a sneak peak for Meta Runner. Melony is the worst of the female characters because her only trait is that she's a worshipper of Watermelons and likes sleeping so much, that she would attack or become an extreme crier if someone were to eat or destroy a watermelon. Not to mention, that her voice (by Wolfychu) is sometimes annoying. Karen Katphish is just your generic "Woman of a Thousand Jobs" character, similar to Miss Rabbit from Peppa Pig, Brooklyn T. Guy from SuperMarioLogan and Larry Needlemyer from The Amazing World of Gumball. Francis, while not an original character, is just the same as he was on Super Paper Mario, but more fittingly villainous, but this was at least intentional since Luke and Kevin hate him just as much as Paper Mario fans do. Clench is literally just Tari's living arm (of all things), and aside from being a good friend to her, he's nothing but just a poorly written comic relief and filler character combined. Depresso is a rip-off of Chuckles the Clown from Toy Story 3 but with a bad depiction of depression. Other bad/mediorce/forgettable characters include: Whimpu - While the Anti-Gang (sans Melony, Anti-Shroomy and a Luigi doll) are okay in general, but despite being meant to since he's an opposite genderbend version of Saiko, he's the worst of the bunch because he's extremely weak and even as a cameo character, he's still annoying. His Japanese text-to-speech voice clips are so bad, that you can even hear some english words in his sentences. Zack, Katie and Cory - As a whole, they are a typical annoying sibling trio created just for the sole purpose of making viewers relate to Karen. Zack is the worst of the bunch as he bullies the latter two around but gets what he deserves, Katie is an easily frightened scaredycat (no pun intended) and a crybaby and Cory is a prop character who does nothing but make annoying sound effects like some kind of MP3 player. Marty Kaizo Fuego the Water Bottle - His only purpose is to make Russian jokes and that's all he's got, despite doing them in a good way and being a bearable character. Desti - Before joining Meggy's side until her death, she was also only created so Meggy can have a rival. She also comes off as a wasted potential as she would've been a main character and more of an anti-hero had Kevin not force Luke to kill her off. Also like Saiko, her redemption comes off as Half-Baked. Thankfully, this reform concept would be used one more time for SMG3, and it worked perfectly. In "addition", some of the pre-existing characters have been flanderized although thankfully, most of them are still likable enough to not deserve a loathsome character article: Starting from 2019 (beginning with Mario's Big Chungus Hunt), Meggy went from a being just a flawless, yet, helpful member of the gang in 2017-2018 to a straight up Creator's Pet to the series and has become way too flawless for her own good (sure, her character as a whole in 2017 and 2018 to some extent was problematic to some fans, but at least it wasn't that bad compared to Jeffy's debut in 2016). Like the other OC characters that came after her and Shroomy, she was constantly shoehorned into episodes as main roles that would've been better concepts if she wasn't even in it. While her former speaking voice actress, Lizzie Freeman did a good job voicing her, her current one, Elsie Lovelock on the other hand, is extremely annoying and nasally, sounding like if Uzi Doorman (another character she voiced) never grew out of her phase of being an always-angry teenager. And dare we mention Meggy’s constant anger issues, the questionable relationship she has with her own friends at times, which only became worse after the Revelations arc where she started abusing Mario and Tari over every little thing, and the fact she shows no effects from being involved from events that could have traumatised her for life, like at the end of Western Spaghetti where she ends up perfectly fine after getting tortured by being shot by her idol for a month straight with no breathers? It got to the point where fans have agreed that SMG4 would still be the same without her. Bowser went from like his video game counterpart but with a comedic side where on one hand, is Mario's nemesis who kidnaps Peach constantly while on the other has times where he and Mario have their team ups from time to time (e.g. the Cooking with Bowser and Mario series and main series episodes like Son of a bowser., Shell Shocked, AREA 64 and Stupid Mario Odyssey 2) but is still evil and sometimes even teams up with SMG3 in some episodes (such as two evil friends., Bad stars and Shoot to the Observatory in the sky), to a good guy whose villainous traits got completely erased. He's one of the few characters who uses his Garry's Mod model more than his SM64 model. This face he makes used to be rolling on the floor to look at as a running gag in the old series, but nowadays everytime we see him on screen, it's always his normal expression making it so uncomfortable to look at, that it's not even a running gag anymore. Although, he's only had very few episodes where he's unlikable such as Boys vs Girls. Mario not only became more stupid and unsympathetic than he was before, but later in the 2020s he became more prone to playing straight man to some characters like Fishy Boopkins, Bob, Luigi and Tari and losing his temper over certain stuff and would outright destroy anybody who'd bring it up like Among Us. For instance in Mario Reacts To Nintendo Memes 5, where he threatened to kill poor innocent Frankie over an Among Us meme, which is pretty hypocritical because he had nothing against them when he met them the first time in If Mario Was AMONG US... and even had a great cooperation with the Green Crewmate. But now he just acts like he straight up changed his mind and has an extreme hatred over them. He also became a lot more unrootable in certain episodes like How To Train Your Mario. Luigi has become more easily scared of everything than before. He's also become even more of a chew toy by his own brother, where he always screams at him over stuff like whatever things he likes or doesn't like that Mario thinks vice-versa, insulting him for being a wimp, physically using him as a tool to solve problems and putting him in so much pain, danger and even (to lesser extents) straight up killing him (usually by accident). SMG4 himself became more caring about his popularity and his computer more than friends sometimes, and he took this way too far in early 2023, where in the "IT'S GOTTA BE PERFECT" saga, he locked himself in the secret slide room, refused to be invited to Mar10 Day, lost it after listening to Mario and Meggy beating up Wario, and throwing him at the router, raised his voiced at everyone, and kicked him (Wario), Waluigi and everyone else out except for Mario and the gang. It even got to the point where taking his editing obsession way too overboard is the reason why Peach's Castle got destroyed, Peach turned into an eldritch horror monster and Mr. Puzzles targeted the gang. Thankfully, not only did he snap out of it, but even before and after then, he's still likable either way. Fishy Boopkins became a childish worshipper of anime (especially if they're magical girl ones). Though he's also still likable thankfully in fact, you might also consider this good flanderization. Kirby was unnecessarily given text in "If Mario was in... Kirby Star Allies" and then a speaking voice in the Lawsuit Arc, which doesn't even fit his character at all since he didn't need any of those in the classic era before. Though it's half possible that SMG4 wanted to help viewers understand what the pink puffball is saying. Shigeru Miyamoto, later in the 2020s, became a strict and bossy antagonist to Mario and SMG4. Princess Peach, while she has been unlikable since the start of the Super Mario 64 bloopers, though did get a little better in 2018 only to go down the drain a year later, has her reached even extreme levels of character derailment where her outrages towards Mario has become even more and more worse than ever before. She also makes this extremely earbleeding sound effect everytime she explodes at Mario. The new characters over the years have stolen the spotlights from lots of classic beloved characters who aren't SMG4, Mario, Luigi, Fishy Boopkins, Meggy, Shroomy (although lately has been getting less major roles), SMG3 (Post-YouTube Arc) and Chris and Swagmaster (Post-Mario's Prison Escape) Some of these OC characters are created or added to the main cast for (speculated) dumb reasons: Saiko was only created because the Garry's Mod models for the Doki Doki Literature Club characters weren't made yet until later in 2018. The irony here is that Luke could've just waited until Monika, Yuri and Sayori's models published so he wouldn't have to create Saiko (It also could've been a great If Mario Was In... episode rather than just a Fishy Boopkins episode). If not, he could've also just improvised by using a different pre-existing character and pretend that character is Monika, Yuri and Sayori instead, just like he did in If Mario was in... Cuphead where he used various characters as the games' bosses since none of their models were on the workshop yet such as using Ariel as Calamaria, or in If Mario Was In... Nickelodeon where he used Shari from Animal Crossing as Boots the Monkey and Stewie Griffin and Milhouse Van Houten as Tommy Pickles and Chuckie Finster. Tari was only added to the main cast as a promotion for their first original series, Meta Runner, which was still in production and upcoming around that time. Melony (who first appeared as a watermelon, supposed to be serving as a Meggy knock off) becoming a human was just another excuse to add more original female characters to the ensemble. What Mario said in her debut as a human is exactly what we were all thinking about the whole female adding trend. and boy, is he right. Karen, aside from being a generic "New Job as the Plot Demands" character, the idea of adding a cat girl is just a lame excuse to appeal to Furry Fandoms.
