Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 is a platform video game released for the Game Boy in 1993 by Nintendo. It is the first installment in the Wario Land series and the last installment in the Super Mario Land series.

Why It Rocks

  1. This is the first game to star Wario as a protagonist.
  2. Tight and responsive controls that are extremely easy to pick up, even when compared to most of the Mario games.
  3. Wario can go through different transformations by collecting a Power-Up pot.
  4. Amazing and detailed graphics for a Game Boy game, with some great backgrounds that look like it's came from a 16-bits games or even the sprites where it's look like it's came from a Super Nintendo game, making this game one of the most detailled game of the Game Boy.
  5. Collecting 99 heart points will gain an extra life.
  6. Mario makes a small cameo at the end of the game.
  7. The ending is different depending on the amount of coins that Wario has collected through the game, some of them are quite awesome such as the best ending.
  8. The game's soundtrack is really good. In fact, the boss theme even got a remix in Mario Kart 7. Making it one of the only songs from the Wario Land series to get a official remix (not counting Wario's victory theme in Super Smash Bros., which is actually original).
  9. The commercial is colorful, despite being a ripoff commercial of its predecessor.
  10. The game is quite long for a Game Boy platformer, as it take 3 to 5 hours to beat the game, which is much longer than the other Super Mario Land games on the Game Boy.

Bad Qualities

  1. Wario moves very slowly in this game. However, this is likely due to the small screen size of the Game Boy.
  2. Sometime it's extremely hard to know where a treasure is, as some of them are too well placed and you will sometime miss them, especially at the end of the game.

Reception

The game received very positive reviews by critics and players alike, with them saying that it's one of the best game of the Game Boy library.

Trivia

  • The game was tentatively titled Super Mario Land 3: Kairiki Wario (スーパーマリオランド3 怪力ワリオ), kairiki meaning "super-strong". The name was used on a Japanese promotional flyer from 1993. The logo depicted on the flyer differs drastically from any of the Wario Land logos.
  • Despite being released in 1994, the game instead carries a 1993 copyright in the ROM itself and on the back of the American box, implying that the game was originally planned for release late that year and then pushed back.
  • This game borrows some sound effects used in Metroid II: Return of Samus, another Game Boy game developed by Nintendo R&D1. One example is when a boss is hit; the noise is the same one made when a Metroid gets hit. Other borrowed sound effects are when the player pauses the game and the sound of triggering mines, which is the same as Samus going into Morph Ball.
  • The manual states that the Select button is "Not used." However, the player can use a Debug Cheat by pressing that button sixteen times on the pause screen. Holding down the and button simultaneously will allow them to alter the numbers on the status bar as well as power up Wario.
  • The Japanese title refers to the game as being the third installment in the Super Mario Land series; however, the name was reversed in the Western versions, as this is rather the first game in the Wario Land series.
