Wii Sports Resort is a 2009 game developed by Nintendo for the Wii and is a sequel to Wii Sports. It was released on July 26, 2009 in the US. It is one of the first titles to require the Wii MotionPlus accessory, which was bundled with the game.
Plot
Wii Sports Resort sets to a tropical resort on an archipelago named Wuhu Island. The first time a player starts the game, the player will skydive to Wuhu Island.
Gameplay
Twelve different sports are available to play; like the original, the sports are each played by holding the Wii Remote (and in some cases, the Nunchuk) in a manner similar to the actual sport being replicated.
Why It Resorts To Succession
- The charm of Wii Sports returns after a few years of its initial release, but this time, Wii Sports Resort advances the setting further in the series.
- The game has a whopping 12 sports and all of them are loaded with different game modes, making this totally worth the average Wii game price.
- This included 10 new sports and 2 returning sports (Bowling and Golf).
- The Wii MotionPlus improves the Wii Remote's motion controls, making this game more playable than Wii Sports.
- Players can earn achievements called Stamps in single-player modes, which will keep the player busy in order to obtain all of them.
- The game takes place in Wuhu Island (originally called Wii Fit Island in Wii Fit), a tropical island where Miis play in resort settings. The island is populated entirely by Miis and various tropical wildlife.
- Wuhu Island is home to its famous landmarks, such as:
- An active volcano (which has not erupted in more than 200 years) known as Maka Wuhu.
- A town called Wuhu Town, with its main plaza with a Bowling Alley, a Basketball Court, a Wishing Fountain, a Broken Clock Tower, etc.
- A harbor where Miis get dropped off called Starboard Harbor, with the Queen Peach next to the harbor.
- A massive bridge connecting to Wuhu Town and Palm Boulevard known as the Red Iron Bridge.
- A huge lighthouse that was mistakenly built at twice the planned size known as The Candle.
- A castle next to Duckling Lake and Summerstone Falls called the Summerstone Castle.
- A beach location with the Camel Rock with the Sugarsand Beach, Starry Beach, and other locations.
- A 5-star hotel next to Palm Boulevard known as the Cocoba Hotel.
- A group of large, ancient buildings that were built long ago known as The Mysterious Ruins.
- A small golf island to the southwest of Wuhu Island known as Wedge Island, complete with The Ninteenth Hole Hotel, Crab Rock, and a bunch of golf courses.
- Wuhu Island is home to its famous landmarks, such as:
- What makes Wuhu Island even better is the fact that in Island Flyover, players can gather information about the island’s iPoints by airplane, which will certainly keep them interested in the setting.
- Wuhu Island also has ancient history, according to the iPoint information of the several monuments located around the island.
- Like Wii Sports, most of the games are awesome and fun to play in both Multiplayer and single-player matches.
- In most high-score based games, you can play up to 4 player games with one Wii remote, meaning that you can play with friends without needing remotes for everyone.
- However, it is considered more fun to play with multiple.
- This does not apply in other sports, such as Swordplay.
- In Basketball Pickup Game, The Miis in your Mii Plaza can appear in your basketball team, meaning that you can technically play the game with 6 people.
- However, you cannot choose them so it is hard to have a satisfying time playing it like this.
- Swordplay Showdown is arguably the most iconic Swordplay game mode, due to how players love the idea of 20 stages of 1 swordfighter having to take down a huge crowd of enemy swordfighters.
- 100-Pin Game is arguably the most iconic Bowling game mode, because of it being a sequel to Power Throws.
- Spin Control went from a Training minigame in Wii Sports to a full Bowling game in Wii Sports Resort, with lanes get harder depending on how well your progress is.
- Like Wii Sports, it has amazing and memorable soundtrack, with the biggest examples being the Main Menu theme, 100-Pin Game background theme, the Air Sports Cabana Lagoon music, Swordplay Showdown theme, and many others.
- The hilarious "Throw the bowling ball behind you to scare the crowd" moment is present in this game too.
- The iconic original 60 CPU Miis (Such as Matt, Abby, Saburo, Ryan, Elisa, Miyu, Lucía, etc.) are back in this game as playable opponents, as well as 40 new CPU Miis (Such as Tommy, Miguel, Shohei, Takashi, Cole, Gwen, Greg, Vincenzo, Midori, etc.) as playable opponents.
- That means that Wii Sports Resort has a whopping 100 CPU Miis! (50 male and 50 female) And each one can be memorable or frustrating to play against.
- And that's not all, some CPU Miis actually have interesting characteristics.
- Miguel is the guide of Island Flyover, by his iPoint called Miguel's Guide Plane. If you follow his plane, he'll guide through some of the iPoints, which is really helpful for first-time players. Plus, if you follow him for at least 3 minutes, you’ll earn the stamp “Follow That Plane”.
- Gwen is the photographer in Skydiving and takes photos when you catch someone. She will take a special photo when you catch 4 Miis at once. She will also come from behind the camera and take a photo with you if you don't catch anyone on your run. You get the stamp "Camera Shy" if you manage to do so.
- Vincenzo is your coach in Cycling and he gives you advice during the race.
- James also doesn't race in Cycling, instead, he's the referee.
- According to Island Flyover, Mike is known as The Extreme Canoeist, who is riding a canoe alone in the ocean. He is trying to reach Wedge Island and back with only a canoe.
- Greg is the Table Tennis Return Challenge host, serving the balls you must return throughout the game.
- There are many special features and Easter Eggs, just like in Wii Sports:
- In Swordplay, You can play with a purple sword after defeating the champion, Matt, in Swordplay Duel and Swordplay Showdown by pressing the 1 button until the game is about to start.
- Also, pressing the 2 button before starting the game in Swordplay Duel will make you play during the Evening.
- In Table Tennis Match mode, You can play with a shoe after defeating the champion, Lucía, by pressing the 1 button before starting the game.
- Not only that, pressing the 2 button before the first match you start will make you play 11-point games.
- In Basketball, You can play at night by pressing the 2 button before starting the game.
- In Bowling, If you are a pro, you can play with a bowling ball with stars. Also, you can choose the color of your bowling ball by pressing one of the directions on the D-Pad until the alley is visible.
- In Swordplay, You can play with a purple sword after defeating the champion, Matt, in Swordplay Duel and Swordplay Showdown by pressing the 1 button until the game is about to start.
- In Island Flyover, for every 10 iPoints you collect, you earn a different reward. These range from unlocking balloons, day-of-time settings, plane design, night lights, your Mii’s face on The Whale Shark, and your own vacation home in Private Island.
- This was one of the first Wii games to have accessibility to the Check Mii Out Channel, though it's no longer available.
- If you ever delete a Mii from the Mii Channel, if that Mii had records, you can transfer them into another Mii if you want.
- Archery has Secret Targets which is a secret food target in each stage (Electronic clock in the Expert final stage); try to find them all to get a Stamp.
- In Island Flyover, if you fly towards the Hillside Cabins, you'll hear sound effects from Super Mario Bros. on the NES.
- In Frisbee Dog, when the balloons start showing up, if you press the A and 2 buttons at the same time, the balloon will pop without even needing to throw a frisbee at it. This can really help for stamp hunters.
- Cycling has the cool idea of racing against up to 99 other players!
- Golf has a massive improvement in terms of content.
- 12 new courses from Wedge Island are present in this game, 3 of them being the bonus courses.
- If you liked the Wii Sports golf courses, all 9 courses from that game have been ported over to this game.
- Not only that, you can play up to 7 different 3-hole games, 2 9-hole games, and most importantly, an 18-hole game.
- Plus, you can play the same courses and games in Frisbee Golf.
Bad Qualities
- Unfortunately, there are some bad sports in this game.
- Power Cruising is a bad sport due to the Nunchuck's motion tracking being nowhere near as good as the Wii Remote with the Wii MotionPlus, making the power cruiser hard to control. Plus, this sport could’ve EASILY been more playable with just the Wii Remote (with the Wii MotionPlus) itself.
- Canoeing is arguably the most boring sport in the game. All you do is race to the end by a time limit. It would've been better if there was a Player VS. CPU racing mode too.
- While it is nice that Golf has been expanded more in terms of quanity, the controls are ridiculously hard to get used to.
- Same can be said for Bowling, while it is a good sport.
- Swordplay Speed Slice is frustrating against the CPUs, especially against Champion Matt, because the stronger CPU Miis are way too fast for a regular player to handle, and it seems like they cheat, making it more difficult to win matches. Most of the time, you won’t defeat them without using pause buffering.
- Cycling is frustrating because of the breath meter. While it is understandable why it needed to be there, it’s flawed a lot. You can lose breath WAY too easily and when you do run out of breath, you’re likely going to fall behind other cyclists and ruin your chances of winning. This might come off as CPU Rubberbanding.
- Frisbee Golf’s throwing accuracy is often inaccurate, causing some issues.
- Basketball 3-Point Contest is a boring, tedious, and frustrating game mode.
- For some reason, in Cycling, you use your arms and not your legs to pedal your Mii’s bike, which is confusing because it does not depict controlling in actual cycling.
- Speaking of Cycing, it is impossible to get to 2500 skill level (Max skill level) in that sport.
- As mentioned earlier, you cannot choose which Miis can be on your team in Basketball.
- Some stamps can be really annoying to earn, such as Save Face, Buzzer Beater, and Untouchable.
- Like in Wii Sports, the game can be really, really annoying when trying to master it.
- The Miis are not very expressive in this game, which is just confusing and it can be creepy at times, and there is no excuse for this, considering that in Wii Play, which came out before this game, the Miis express a lot.
- The worst offender is in Table Tennis Return Challenge, any time the player hits Greg in the face, he just blinks and doesn’t change expression. This made some fans think he’s a masochist.
- Since 2013, Check Mii Out Channel accessibility can no longer be performed without hacking.
- Some games do not have single-player mode. (Ex. Dogfight, Canoeing VS, and Power Cruising VS)
- Sometimes the Wii MotionPlus can get out of control, which forces you to recalibrate it just to reset it.
- Unless you’re really good at accuracy and precision, the Secret Targets in Archery can be a pain to hit with arrows.
- Some iPoints can be really difficult to find yourself without using a walkthrough or map, like the Diving Spot, Seaplane Team, and Whale Watchers.
- Lack of online play especially since during the time it was released, Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection was still around during the DS and Wii days, and games before 2009 like Mario Kart Wii and Mario Strikers Charged had online play. Hell, even Wii Music had online support.
Reception
Wii Sports Resort received generally positive reviews with a score of 80 according to metacritic making it the highest rated Wii Series game along with Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus. The Highest score was from Giant bomb, who gave it a perfect review, with the lowest from The AV Club who gave it an above average 58. IGN overall thought the game was average, enjoying the pick-up-and-play quality but was disappointed with some of the sports giving it a 7.7 while Gamespot enjoyed the game as a whole but criticised the need for extra Wii MotionPlus attachments, with some of the sports being letdowns giving it an 8.3. User reviews were slightly more positive with a score of 82.
