Yoshi's Crafted World is a 2.5D platform game developed by Good-Feel and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It was announced at E3 2017 and released worldwide on March 29, 2019. It is the sequel and spiritual successor to Yoshi's Woolly World.
Crafted Qualities
- While it may not have the exact same charm as its predecessor, it still has a good identity and charm of its own by the use of virtual craft supplies.
- Amazing, colorful graphics that utilize the craft/diorama theme well, with many different environments to explore.
- This is one of the few Nintendo-published games to utilize the Unreal Engine.
- Smooth controls, as per usual. Rather than just throwing eggs in front of him, Yoshi can now throw them in all different directions similar to Yoshi's Story.
- You can wear Costumes, which are creative and detailed disguises that reduce the amount of damage Yoshi takes. These Costumes are obtained from the gacha machine in each world, provided you have enough coins for them.
- Once you complete each level once, you get two additional gameplay styles to increase their playability.
- The Flip Side of each course is the same level, just done in the reverse of the Front Side. Here, you search for the Poochy Pups from Woolly World within the time limit.
- After the area has been cleared, the Blockafellers send you on a scavenger hunt to hit certain souvenirs that they ask for. This encourages exploration and careful observation of each level, be it the Front Side or Flip Side.
- The bosses are engaging and fun to fight, as usual, particularly the Tin Can Condor, the Gator Train, Spike the Piranha, the final boss fight against Baby Bowser (of course), and the secret boss fight against Kamek.
- After you beat the boss levels, Boss Challenges become unlocked to give you specific goals if you wish to refight them.
- This game has 2-player local co-op gameplay, which makes a return from the Wii U version of Woolly World after the 3DS port cut it out.
Not-So Crafted Qualities
- The game is a little too easy compared to most other Yoshi games. This is especially noticeable with the returning Mellow Mode, as this time Yoshi can gain height when he flutters around the stage, unlike Woolly World.
- Thankfully, the last few levels (particularly "Be Afraid of the Dark" and each level of Hidden Hills, which lack checkpoints) are more challenging and balanced in terms of difficulty.
- Subpar soundtrack, right up there with the likes of Yoshi's New Island. A majority of the music in the game recycles the same thematic music piece, meaning that less than half of the levels have an original music track.
- There is an over-reliance on Blockafeller fetch quests to artificially lengthen the path to attaining 100%.
- On the topic of attaining 100%, all you get for finding all of the Smiley Flowers and Sprouts in each level is three additional Costumes.
- Go-Go Yoshi is severely underutilized, appearing in only one normal level of the same name and the secret boss fight against Kamek.
Reception
Yoshi's Crafted World received generally positive reviews from critics and players, with Metacritic giving the game 79/100 and 7.9/10, respectively. Critics lauded the charm of the game with its level design and graphics, as well as its innovative gameplay formula, though the soundtrack and lack of difficulty were criticized.
