Aaahh!! Real Monsters is an Action/Adventure, Platform game based on the Nickelodeon/Klasky Csupo show of the same name. It was released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega Genesis on August 15, 1995.
AAAHH!!!-ful Qualities
- Boring level design and dull gameplay. The levels are also very long, making them extra tedious.
- The only weapon to use is a fish bone, which is also really weak.
- The musics are very repetitive and annoying, since they loop over and over.
- There is hardly a story. The monsters simply have to scare people, collect items and complete levels to graduate from the Monster Academy. There are almost no cutscenes either, even for a 1995 SNES/Genesis game.
- Ickis, Krumm, Oblina, the Gromble, the Snorch and Zimbo (although he only appears briefly) are the only monsters to appear in the entire game, which gives a large limit on the character roles. There could have been a few levels in which Stazula, Kriggle, Horrifica, Zabliner, Borl, and others could have appeared. The show at least sometimes gives focus to the other students, but the game just forgets about them completely.
- Ickis is somewhat overpowered, giving there little reason to play as Krumm or Oblina over him. Krumm also doesn't jump very well, making him useless.
- There is no saving or password system, which means the player has to beat the game in one playthrough.
- The game can get way too hard at times.
- There are Bonus Stages, but they are always the exact same, collect a set amount of items. The only difference between the two versions is the item layout.
- The boss fight against the Snorch in the SNES version is very boring. Not only can the monsters not hurt him with direct attacks, but they can only hurt him with a single tire from the ceiling, one at a time.
AAAHH!!!-some Qualities
- The game is somewhat faithful to the show, including the characters' scaring tactics.
- The graphics are okay.
- The environments look decent and pretty realistic.
- Simon, the main antagonist of the show, is appropriately used as the game's final boss.
- The Genesis is considered a better version, it has a better challenges for bosses.
- Okay, but very responsive for controls.
