Nickelodeon is an American pay television channel that was first tested on December 1, 1977, before launching nationwide on April 1, 1979, as the first children’s cable TV channel.
Why the First Kids' Network Used to Be Great
- It was the very first major kids' television network. It launched nationwide on April 1, 1979, nearly a decade after the premiere of Sesame Street, the most famous and successful children's television show at the time.
- It spawned many iconic and memorable shows that were never seen before like the Nicktoons SpongeBob SquarePants, Rugrats, and Hey Arnold!, as well as the Nickcoms Clarissa Explains It All, iCarly, Drake & Josh, and All That.
- The catchy iconic jingle.
- At the beginning of each Nickelodeon-related VHS tape during the '90s, the remixed version of its jingle would make the Nickelodeon theme song catchier than this.
- They greatly received magazines, audio CDs, audio cassettes, video games, clothing, comic books, theme parks, merchandise, and, of course, theatrical feature films.
- The network's 1981-1984 logo was impressive, but the most iconic logo is the one from 1984-2009 which included the splat and lightbulb, which were considered the most fan-favorite for fans alike.
- At Universal Studios Florida, Nickelodeon had a Nicktoons-themed simulator ride, Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast, which was replaced by Despicable Me Minion Mayhem in 2011, since Despicable Me became an instant success in 2010.
- It had its own original game shows, starting with Double Dare during Halloween 1986 (not to be confused with the short-lived 1976-77 CBS game show with the same name).
- Back then, it preferred quality over quantity, as it actually cared about its viewers and didn't just air any reruns.
- It had lots of iconic bumpers, most notably the beloved “Not just cartoons.. we’re NickToons!” song bumper.
- Many of its shows spawned popular internet memes and the network embraced it by making wonderful meme-based SpongeBob toys.
- Its own animation studio company, Nickelodeon Animation Studio, created many original television programs for Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. and created many theatrical films that were distributed by Paramount Pictures and produced by Nickelodeon Movies.
- Speaking of Nickelodeon Movies, many of the openings are very iconic and well-made.
- Its very own television-taping company, Nickelodeon Studios, doubled as an original family attraction at Universal Studios Florida, but sadly closed on April 30, 2005.
- Its very own website launched in 1996.
- The network's international versions are good.
Qualities That Aren't Fun
- The current logo from late-2009, while still good, has been simplified, and looks nowhere near as good as the older ones from 1981 to 2009.
- The network started going downhill horribly since 2011 when the network started to focus a lot on bad nickcoms, milking The Fairly OddParents, and trying to act cool, modern, and hip with kids by throwing in memes that do not get that much attention anymore. All of their attempts often failed so much because of how unfunny and cringe-inducing those attempts really are.
- Even before 2011, there are some bad to mediocre movies and shows such as:
- Harriet the Spy
- Mr. Meaty
- The Brothers Flub
- Tak and the Power of Juju (TV series)
- The Naked Brothers Band
- Fanboy & Chum Chum (which started the first decline of the network)
- Glenn Martin DDS
- Fred: The Movie
- The Last Airbender
- Cyma Zarghami, the former president of Nickelodeon from 2006-2018, was pretty bad at doing her job as president.
- She is also the reason why the 2006-2010 era of Nickelodeon was mediocre.
- They closed down Nickelodeon Studios in 2005.
- in Japan it was shut down in 2009. Again in 2022, unfortunately, some Nickelodeon shows didn't have japanese dubs,
- They haven't transition to HD Widescreen 16:9 for any of TV Shows until 2012, except for the nickcoms since 2005 starting with Zoey 101, (excluding "The Naked Brothers Band"), Glenn Martin DDS, Planet Sheen and Fanboy & Chum Chum.
- Even during the good eras of Nickelodeon, Dan Schneider himself was a complete disaster at the studio, as he and his friends would engage in sexually assaulting children and grooming said children by shoving their foot fetish onto them, forcing them to drink alcohol, yelling at them furiously and fighting them in serious arguments, having some of them sit on Schneider's lap and let him molest them, and recorded them doing disgusting activities, which has caused a lot of controversy and managed to expose Schneider and his pals as pedophiles. Thankfully, he get fired after so many years that had been worked on.
Reception
From 1977 to 2010, Nickelodeon experienced a golden era, garnering widespread acclaim for its diverse and engaging programming. This period was marked by a roster of beloved sitcoms and iconic cartoons that captivated audiences of all ages. Classic shows like "SpongeBob SquarePants," "Rugrats," and "Hey Arnold!" became cultural phenomena, celebrated for their creativity, humor, and relatable characters. Nickelodeon's innovative and entertaining bumpers added to its unique charm, creating a cohesive and enjoyable viewing experience. This era is fondly remembered by many fans who continue to revisit and cherish the shows that defined their childhood, cementing Nickelodeon's legacy in television history.
