Anatole Latuile is a French animated television series by Éric Gutierrez and Thibaut Chatel adapted from the homonymous comic strip and broadcast on January 8, 2018, on France 3, and rebroadcast on April 8, 2019, on France 4.

In Quebec, it has broadcast since December 14, 2018, on Télé-Québec.

In June 2020, the France Télévisions group announced a second season with the same number of episodes released for the 2020-2021 school year.

Plot

The series tells the adventures of Anatole Latuile, a CM1 student, and his best friend, Jason Bombix, who is always ready to do silly things and jokes.

Pourquoi c'est une énorme tuile (et PAS dans le bon sens) (Why it's a Huge tile (and NOT in a good way))

  1. Poor understanding of source material: The series lacks the comic book's charm as messed-up storylines and poor humor replace it.
  2. Poor and bland flash animation with animation errors everywhere and very bad backgrounds.
  3. Most of the episodes are only adapted versions of the comics, but even if it works a little because the gags last several pages, it is poorly executed and lacks inspiration.
  4. Even if an episode not adapted from the comics, it's terrible and poorly written.
  5. The characters suffer from generic and unlikable characters.
    • Anatole Latuile turns himself into a generic "Butt Monkey" often doing stupid things and having dumb ideas that go wrong all the time.
    • Olympe Fayoli, although sympathetic, is generally a Mary Sue, the perfect girl, and she represents the cliché of the nerd with glasses.
    • Alban Largentière, although sometimes sympathetic, is often unsympathetic in a few episodes. He is nothing but a "generic and rich rival" something seen and reviewed in many shows.
    • The Mafiolo brothers are unlovable and nothing but "generic tough guys".
    • Mylène Bombix, Jason's sister, is unlovable but also a horrible person and a Karma Houdini.
  6. Like Eliot Kid, the series punishes Anatole and Jason (sometimes), but Anatole's friends (Naomie, Henriette) are often involved in Anatole's plans and are never punished, which makes them Karmas Houdinis.
  7. The series rips off Angelo Rules.
  8. Boring and generic theme song more similar to Les Sisters and Bunsen is a Beast recycled and can be listened to throughout the series.
  9. And of course, there are worst to mediocre episodes such as:
    • Spinning
    • Operation Bulletin
    • Sapphire has Disappeared
    • Fly
    • The Treasure Hunt
    • Bora Bora Tickets
    • Anatole, Delegate
    • The Anniversary of Morvox
    • Badcat
    • The Truth that Hidden from You
    • The Revenge of Revenge (not only the worst episode but also a horrible way to end season 1)
  10. Quantity over Quality: Similar to Taffy, the writers announced a season 2 with even more gruesome moments.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. There are some likable characters.
  2. The French dubbing is great.
