Angry Birds Space is a video game that is a part of the Angry Birds series. Developed and released by Rovio Entertainment in March 2012 for mobile devices, it takes place in outer space, with the Angry Birds struggling to save the eggsteroids from the claws of King Pig and his minions. It is the fifth main installment of the series, following the original, Seasons, Rio and Friends. It is also currently being re-released into Angry Birds Reloaded.
Plot
The flock (Red, The Blues, Bomb, Chuck, Terence and later Bubbles) are shown having a nice day with their eggs, until then, a bird (Ice Bird) falls from a portal. After a little bit of time of interacting with each other, a claw (controlled by King Pig) steals the birds' eggs and Ice Bird's Eggsteroid. They then go on a quest to stop King Pig and get their property back.
Why It's A Meteoric Success
- Amazing direction when trying to slingshot the birds. This is because it is in space.
- The birds now have different abilities which is very great. For example: Lazer Chuck can speed up right where your finger taps, and Bomb makes a ring of fire around him when he explodes for extra damage.
- Like the other Angry Birds ganes, the graphics are really awesome, compared to Angry Birds Seasons.
- This game, along with Angry Birds Rio, are the first games to introduce boss fights, which is a great addition to the Angry Birds franchise.
- When you fail a level, the pigs in the Level Failed screens now have animations, which is really cool.
- It had a crossover with NASA, since one of the screenshots on the App Store & Google Play show a picture of a NASA person.
- The Mirror Mode is great, because you can do all the levels but backwards, which is nice, and certainly well executed.
- Great soundtrack, like the Main Theme for the Game, & The Slash Theme. The soundtracks in the Reloaded remake are also catchy, such as the Pig Bang and Utopia bosses.
- Like always, the power-ups are very useful.
- The Solar System is a very decent addition to the game, and provides fun facts about each of the celestial bodies.
- The background ambience is another great addition that captures the feelings of each of the worlds.
Bad Qualities
- Unlike the first game, the Mighty Eagle (Space Eagle in this game) can't destroy everything (not even some pigs), making him sometimes useless.
- Sometimes, like the Classic game, Seasons, & Rio, some levels can be nearly impossible to beat when three starring. Cold Cuts 2-10 even had to be made easier in a later update due to how impossible and luck-based it was to do so.
- Some other characters like Hal, Tony, Matilda, Stella, and Silver were absent, nor they even receive their Space designs.
- The background ambiences do not loop properly.
- The game is no longer available in 2019, meaning if you have it in your purchases you can get it. Luckily, there's a chance that this game is coming back, since the New CEO Announced the return of the old Angry Birds games.
- Wasted potential: Solar System is notably a short chapter, only having 13 levels. It could have included more levels such as the Sun, Phobos, Deimos, Ceres, Io, Ganymede, Callisto, Titan, Enceladus, Miranda, Triton, Charon, and the Kuiper Belt.
Reception
Like the first three games, the game received positive reception from fans & reviewers.
Trivia
- Wingman appears as a power-up, he has the same strength as The Incredible Terence, but with a new ability: He can attract things in an activated wave. Wingman's normal version also makes a cameo in the game where it shows the player an ad to play Angry Birds Friends.
- The pigs have their Google Chrome sprites, with a few added frames.
- In Angry Birds Friends, one golden egg is based on Angry Birds Space.
- Angry Birds Space and Angry Birds Star Wars are the only Angry Birds games to have more than one interactive screen. In both the menu and the title screen, you have the option to pop pigs, and other objects such as ice balls.
- The birds are based on and superheroes.
- Space Red (Red)'s masks resemble those of Wolverine.
- The Lightning Birds (The Blues (Jay, Jake, and Jim))' helmets resemble that of The Flash.
- Space Bomb/Firebomb (Bomb)'s coat, skin colors and powers resemble Firestorm.
- Lazer Bird (Chuck)'s goggles resemble those of Cyclops.
- Ice Bird's powers resemble those of Iceman.
- The Incredible Terence (Terence)'s new skin color and large size resembles the Hulk, along with that his noise ability has a roaring noise like Hulk.
- Cosmic Bubbles/Atomic Bird (Bubbles)'s costume resembles that of Firestorm, similar to Bomb's costume in the game, but his ability resembles Lagoon Boy.
- In Angry Birds Space, the game developers enhanced the pigs to become more responsive to certain reactions, defeat and near experiences such as: acting frightened when falling blocks or a bird comes near, an eating animation (added in Utopia update), and sleeping along with the other pigs, yawning when the birds don't approach the Bad Piggies. This even happens when you first start a level (and occasional giggling can happen).
- This was later implemented in Angry Birds Star Wars.
- In v1.2.2, the backgrounds of the levels have been changed a bit. It happened again in v1.3.2.
- When the Bubbles made his way to Angry Birds Space, he has new sprites when he inflates and during time inflated. Also, if the player pauses the game at just the time when the Bubbles inflates, they'll see that he has an extra sprite before his coat is stretched and his mouth is open.
- Lazer Bird used to have a cape during cutscenes, animations and trailers, and the loading screen, but doesn't have it and has a lightning bolt-shaped tail during gameplay and on the title screen. That was changed in v1.3.2, because in that version, the Lazer Bird finally receives his cape and loses his lightning bolt-shaped tail during gameplay. Now people can use the Lazer Bird's newer sprite, the one with his cape.
- Angry Birds Space is the first Angry Birds game to have levels take place in space, with the second being Angry Birds Star Wars. Angry Birds Star Wars II is the 3rd game to have levels in space.
- With the power-ups in Angry Birds Space in the Pig Dipper Update, the Space Eagle Button received a change in the button color, from green to purple. The eye symbol stays the same, except it reflects light. Also, the Space Eagles are no longer just one purchase, they will be available at the shop. Also, notably, the number of Space Eagles to buy and prices has change: 80 Eagles has been decreased to 50 ($2.99 changed to $4.99). 280 Eagles has been decreased to 110 ($7.99 changed to $9.99), and 980 Eagles has been drastically decreased to 225 ($19.99 stays the same).
- On March 7, 2013, Angry Birds Space was updated with an exclusive new theme song made by Slash.
- The Mighty Buzzard takes the place of the Space Eagle during Beak Impact. He slightly resembles NASA astronaut Buzz Aldrin, one of the first two astronauts to land on the moon.
- This is the first game not to have the female birds at all.
- There is comic in Angry Birds: Monsters and Mistletoe, where Matilda appears as "Queen Matilda of the Spaceways", which possibly implies how she would look like in Angry Birds Space. In the comic, she has the power of turning pigs into food with her pistol.
- Angry Birds Space was released on March 22, 2012, but Angry Birds Rio was released on March 22, 2011, making it the only Angry Birds game to be released on another Angry Birds game's birthday.
- This is the first Angry Birds game where the birds' trajectories are traced before the are launched, making it easier for players to figure out where they will land. This concept has been used for the Sling Scope in Angry Birds.
