Aqua Teen Hunger Force, sometimes abbreviated as ATHF, or known more simply as Aqua Teen, is an animated television series that airs on Cartoon Network's late–night block, Adult Swim. It is about three anthropomorphic and ill-mannered food items known as the Aqua Teens and their quick tempered neighbor, Carl, having crazy adventures in New Jersey.

Plot

The show centers around three anthropomorphic fast food items. The brains of the group is Frylock, a floating box of fries, but Master Shake does a lot of the talking, most of it aimed at making life miserable for Meatwad, a sweet-natured ball of meat.

In earlier episodes, the trio would solve and fight crimes, many of which were caused by Dr. Weird, the scientist who created the trio. However, this premise was dropped early on in favor of the trio getting involved in many different kinds of strange situations, with their next-door neighbor, Carl Brutananadilewski, often getting unintentionally involved.

Why It's Number One In the Hood, G

  1. Despite being a crime fighting show, the premise can sometimes be different, especially in the later seasons.
  2. Creative and smooth animation, with Adobe Photoshop special effects and backgrounds that actually fits.
  3. Iconic and memorable theme by Schooly D.
  4. The later seasons theme that use alternative titles are also memorable in their own way.
  5. Memorable and likable characters such as:
    • Shake
    • Frylock
    • Meatwad
    • Carl
  6. Threatening and enjoyable villains such as:
    • Dr Weird (who sadly is absent after season 3)
    • The Mooninites, Ignignokt and Err
    • The Plutonians Oglethorpe and Emory
    • Hand Banana
    • Dr. Wongburger
    • Rabbot
    • MC Pee Pants
  7. Awesome voice acting, especially by George Lowe (Dad/Jarvis from The Brak Show) and C. Martin Croker (Zorak from Space Ghost Coast to Coast).
  8. Clever writing and humor, which is made better with the show's nonexistent logic, with multiple running gags, such as Shake causing whatever he throws to explode or the swear words being censored with random sounds.
    • The humor was even an influence on James Rolfe's (AVGN) sense of humor.
  9. There are a handful of heartwarming moments, especially the ones involving Meatwad.
    • Speaking of which, the show can also have emotional moments, despite being a fully comedy show.
  10. Lots of hilarious and memorable episodes:
  11. A lot of memorable quotes that some also became a meme:
    • "Truly, they were, an Aqua Teen Hunger Force... YOUR EMERGENCY BREAK IS ON!!"
    • "Don't tell me how to drive, jackass!"
    • "Well... Dracula called, and he said he's coming tonight, and I said okay."
    • "Look, all I know is that this cord was plugged into my house, and your house was glowing like the freakin' sun. So, I put two and two together there, and decided that you're pissing me off."
    • "See, all I know is ball, and good, and rape."
    • "Tonight, you'll get your d*ck ripped off"
    • "You're a madman, Wongburger!"
    • "YOU QUESTION THE WORDS OF THE MIGHTY JIMMY?!"
  12. The special movie, Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theaters is good.
  13. After season 11, it received a brand new web series called Aquadonk Side Pieces, which is, if not, even better than the original.

Bad Qualities

  1. Swearing is censored on the Adult Swim airing. Luckily, it's uncensored on HBO Max.
  2. Some characters can be unlikable, such as the sirens and the monkeys.
  3. Meatwad's voice can sometimes be hard to understand without subtitles.
  4. The episodes prior to volume 7 are not uncensored so far.
  5. There's some bad or average episodes like:
  6. A promotion for the show caused the 2007 Boston Mooninite panic, which led to a regime change at Cartoon Network, causing many beloved series to end prematurely, several key people to leaving the network, and a shift in content that focused on live action rather than animation. Fortunately, this rut was rather short lived, and the network had another renaissance in the 2010s.

Reception

James Rolfe, best known for creating the Angry Video Game Nerd, has cited the show as an influence on Nerd as well as shaping his sense of humour. YouTuber Jason Gastrow, better known as Videogamedunkey, has also cited the show as a comedic influence. It has a 7.7/10 on IMDb.

Trivia

  • In some of the seasons' DVDs, selecting the "play all" option will cause all of the episodes of that season to play at the same time.
  • It spawned several Internet memes (ex. Tonight You, Yo Fryman, YOU QUESTION THE WORDS OF THE MIGHTY JIMMY?!, and of course, pretty much everything Dr. Weird has said.)
  • Episodes prior to season 6 are censored, the first episode to be uncensored is "The Creature From The Plaque Lagoon".
    • Speaking of which, the first episode to be rated TV-MA was the season 4 episode, "Dickesode", where Carl "wins" an unwanted prize at a fast food contest.
