Cocomelon (stylized as CoComelon) (formerly known as ABC Kids TV until 2018) is an American YouTube channel and content farm owned by the British company, Moonbug Entertainment, and maintained by the American company, Treasure Studio. It first aired on September 1, 2006. Cocomelon specializes in 3D animation videos, of both traditional nursery rhymes and their own original children's songs.

Why It's a Nursery Crime

  1. The main problem is that the farm is hyper-stimulating due to its constant and often unfitting fast pacing, and it can cause many children to be addicted as a result. It's also likely to cause behavioral problems and attention disorders to the point where it even makes kids throw violent tantrums when their parents turn Cocomelon off.
    • A terrible example of this is in its version of "Baby Shark" where it's so unfittingly fast that it outright beats a literal fight scene from Arcane. We are not joking.
  2. This is even arguably one of, if not the worst "It's made for kids" excuses after Dhar Mann and Elsagate. Ironically, Cocomelon has become an Elsagate content farm channel since 2018.
  3. Another main problem with Cocomelon is that it's mostly just a sing-a-long show, with no plot, follow-through, or cohesion. There are also barely any moments of the characters actually talking, besides mostly making grunts, laughing, and shouting "hooray!", despite the show having voice actors.
    • Now true, there HAVE been shows, movies, games, and other types of media that have characters be non-verbal, silent and/or rarely talk at all (E.G Tom & Jerry, Wile E. Coyote, Mr. Bean (both the live-action and animated version, although the animated version is decent), Pucca and Garu (even though Clone Garu speaks), Henry Stickmin, Dumbo (Except in Dumbo's Circus), Nezuko Kamado, Teardrop (BFDI), Lyle (Lyle Lyle Crocodile, Except he sings in the 2022 film, as singing counts as talking), Komi Shouko (Komi Can’t Communicate), Gromit (Wallace and Gromit), Teletubbies, Marshmello, Blue Man Group, Dog Man, O (Alphablocks), Grubber (The Powerpuff Girls), The Achromatic Colourblocks (Black, White, Grey, Dark Grey, Light Grey), Dougie (Bluey), Saoirse (Song of the Sea, formerly; she had her seal coat put on and sang "The Song", which restored her voice), Crazy Frog, Edward and Henry (Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go! only), Cap'n Crunch (newer commercials only), Scrat (Ice Age), Tchotchke (HouseBroken), Proteus (Thomas & Friends), Flat Eric, Snoopy and Woodstock, UmiCar, Liz (The Magic School Bus, except in some PC games), the animal puppets and narrators from Baby Einstein, Shaun the Sheep, Claude from Grand Theft Auto III, Mario and Luigi (most games), Zipper (Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers), Tinker Bell (except in her own movies), Rescue Rope (Go, Diego, Go!), Little Caesar, The Michelin Man, Moby (BrainPOP), all characters from Happy Tree Friends, Jason Voorhees, Mr. Noodle (Elmo's World), Mr. Game and Watch, Booba, Sweetpea (The Secret Life of Pets), Tex (THX), and Steve and Alex (official Minecraft videos and official music videos only)), but those were still able to have the characters express themselves in unnecessary ways that give them a fun charm and also do not rely on musical numbers.
  4. Terrible and lackluster CGI animation, even for YouTube Kids standards. It makes the characters look creepy, and unrendered in some shots. Not helping is that the animation became worse by replacing the animators with artificial tools in 2021.
    • Its Netflix spinoff Cocomelon Lane does have better animation, being animated by Atomic Cartoons, with the effects looking better than the main show, but that is not saying much since the designs are still bland and the character animation is quite average.
  5. Quantity over quality: Despite the poor reception, this show has gone on for WAY to long, with a total of 11 seasons, 1,000 episodes, and a lifespan of 18 years so far, with the show only lasting this long, because it's popular with kids, even though kids deserve way better than this, and the farm stays the same and does not improve at all, which comes to show how blind the creators are to the criticism of this show.
  6. The songs are annoying to listen to, with many annoying voice acting for the babies, and the songs in general are extremely badly written, even for a kids' show. This is unacceptable since even some kids' shows such as Doraemon, Horrid Henry, Ojamajo Doremi, Crazy Frog, despite not being a cartoon and are rather music videos, but still better than this, or even Caillou have better songs than that, especially Doraemon, Horrid Henry, and Ojamajo Doremi, the other, while generic, are also decent, but not as good as these three shows in term of songs (despite Crazy Frog being a bad property and having a huge hatebase). Hell, even Dora the Explorer had better songs, despite them being repeated in almost every episode of said show, and that came out in 2000, six years before this mess came out!
  7. While the characters aren't bad, they are pretty much the same characters and are completely one-dimensional and soulless, so much so that they can hardly be considered characters.
  8. When there IS voice acting, it's very annoying and atrocious, with it being one of the worst voice acting in any shows ever, with the voices being so high pitched and screechy that it makes Crazy Frog have phenomenal voice acting, in comparison to this show.
  9. Much like Teen Titans Go!, the colors are so unnecessarily bright, as an attempt to appeal to its young kid audience, but here it is even worse than that said show since it looks very off, and considering how terrible the animation is, it makes this problem much worse.
  10. Many of the episodes usually play out the same, with zero differences, to distinguish each other, making the series extremely repetitive and boring, since there are multiple rehashed elements from other episodes, and the series never changes its formula, to stay fresh, and instead, refuses to evolve, likely due to its success with children, under the age of 5, which, again, doesn't mean anything, since there are other kids shows that have superior material than what this show has to offer, and have good messages for them unlike Cocomelon or any of its clones.
  11. Very confusing what style of genre Cocomelon wants to be, from a perspective, it looks like it's going to be a slice-of-life style show, like Arthur, Hey Arnold!, and the Non Non Biyori series, but on a few occasions, it will have fantasy elements, with animals being able to walk on hind legs like humans, and more.
  12. Its terrible animated Netflix spin-off series called Cocomelon Lane, is as bad, if not worse than this, in spite of having better animation. The characters are more unlikable and the songs are still annoying as ever, not to mention that it only exists to make more money and had no words to describe how awful it is, which shows how heavily milked this farm is.
  13. Misleading title: The title of this show, Cocomelon, gives off an impression that it would be about either a coconut and/or a melon when in truth it's about humans (sort of) going about their everyday lives, which makes zero sense when the title says that.
  14. It even aired on multiple channels for kids around the world, such as Universal Kids and Cartoon Network's Cartoonito block which is now off the air on Cartoonito in the USA. Considering it is one of the worst kids shows ever made and airing it on channels with kids' shows, despite Cocomelon being one of them, it's still inappropriate to air it on non-music channels and airing it on a music channel would be more appropriate.
    • However, fortunately, this show might have not aired in some countries.
    • It's even available on Netflix, at least not in all countries.
  15. Some of the songs are even inappropriate and gross at times, like the "Potty Training Song".
  16. Some scenes of the music can be offensive, such as two people being gay. It's so atrocious that some countries such as Indonesian removing the Moonbug channel and censored this scene on Indonesian television channel due to LGBT content being prohibited in the country.
  17. It's extremely boring and frustrating to watch, likely due to poor writing and childish nature when compared to other kids shows since it's so childish, that it prevents any enjoyment being had with the series, especially when there are other kids shows that act less childish and are more self-aware, by teaching kids valuable lessons instead of random stuff for no reason like Cocomelon does.
    • Not to mention that even a 6-year-old would probably already hate the show due to how childish and abysmal it is.
  18. Even worse, despite being an abysmal show, the channel on YouTube had one of the biggest numbers of subscribers, having in total of over 184 million subscribers, which just shows that even some of the worst shows of all time can be some of the most popular shows ever.
    • It even has a Nintendo Switch game, and then for mobile on Netflix Games only. Unsurprisingly, these games were extremely terrible, and possibly some of the worst games of all time.
  19. Like Peppa Pig, this show could cause children to act the same way and have much worse behavior. This problem here is also almost, if not worse than in Caillou.
  20. While it's not a bad point in some other shows, the songs are so abysmal, they could easily be stuck in your head for a very long time due to how annoying they are. So good luck getting them off.
  21. There is also Cocomelon merchandise on the shelves in lots of stores, which shows that the web series evolved into something more.
  22. In case nothing above is bad enough, there's even a movie adaption of the show in development, which is more evidence that this series/farm is a gigantic cash cow.
  23. The logo is awful and extremely generic, bland, and poorly designed overall, even though this is a baby show but still, not to mention wholly ironic due to showing a watermelon-styled CRT TV set, when in reality, this show is a web series rather than a traditional TV series.
    • ABC Kid TV and That's Me on TV, the former names of the channel, also used the CRT TV set in their logos.
  24. Overall, this gave nursery rhymes a bad reputation. In fact, it's insane popularity is one of the reasons why the animation medium is sometimes frowned on due to the "animation is a kid's genre" excuse, and it really shows!

Redeeming Qualities That Can Sing and Play

  1. It wasn't this abysmal from 2006-2018, during the That's Me on TV era and ABC Kids TV era, until 2018 when "Bath Song" reached over a million views and started the tragedy.
  2. The designs for the adults are alright.
  3. Despite the show being bad, the characters are actually likable despite all being very bland and one-dimensional.
  4. At least it teaches children to play and sing, despite how repetitive it is.

Reception

Cocomelon received overwhelmingly negative reviews by critics and YouTubers alike, with some saying that it's one of the worst kids shows ever made. However, with over 184 million subscribers, it is currently the most popular channel in the Elsagate category, as well as the third most-subscribed channel on YouTube, behind T-Series and MrBeast.

How to Stop Your Child from Watching Cocomelon

  1. First of all, the idea of not letting children on YouTube, or the internet in general, until they're at least 13 (in the rest of the world, including the UK) or 16 (In California and the EEA, excluding the UK). It's easy for them to get addicted, and forsake other entertainment like TV shows and toys.
  2. Make a playlist of videos that you'll approve for your children. That way, your kids can watch cartoons that don't have this type of content.
    • There are plenty of official channels, that offer authentic episodes and clips; including WildBrain, Kabillion, Disney, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., CBeebies, Cartoonito, Nicktoons, NickRewind, PBS Kids, WB Kids, Akili Kids! TV, Treehouse Direct, Retro Rerun, Keep It Weird, Kids TV English, Throwback Toons, BRB Internacional, ZooMoo, Pinkfong, DreamWorks, Cartoon Network, Peacock Jr., Netflix Jr., Peacock Kids, Prime Video Kids, HBO Max Family, Animated Cartoons for Children for Universal/DreamWorks cartoons, Hasbro, Mattel, Animakids and Boomerang. Of course, check for equivalent channels on your territory, if you're not from the USA.
    • A few TV shows even have their own official channels, including Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, Thomas & Friends, SpongeBob SquarePants, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Fairly OddParents!, Curious George, Arthur, Cyberchase, Super Why, The Smurfs, Peppa Pig, Pocoyo, Pokémon, My Little Pony, Strawberry Shortcake, The Amazing World of Gumball, Adventure Time, Dexter's Laboratory, The Powerpuff Girls, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Johnny Bravo, Ed, Edd n Eddy, Johnny Test, Woody Woodpecker, Casper the Friendly Ghost, Maisy Mouse, Peter Rabbit (2012), Mofy, Miffy, Hello Kitty, Fireman Sam, Postman Pat, Pingu, Noddy, Musti, LazyTown, Pinkfong, The Backyardigans, Yo Gabba Gabba, Franklin, Little Bear, Blue’s Clues & You!, Barney & Friends, Sesame Street, The Muppets, Gummibär, Baby Einstein, Bob the Builder, Fifi and The Flowertots, Roary the Racing Car, The Powerpuff Girls, Garfield, Chuggington, The Berenstain Bears, Olivia the Pig, Ben 10, Kid vs Kat, Toopy and Binoo, VeggieTales, Peanuts, Trulli Tales, Storybots, Jelly Jamm, Superbook (both 1981 and 2011 versions), Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, Let's Go Luna, Molly of Denali, Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum, Steven Universe, The Loud House, The Casagrandes, Caillou, and Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!. Some shows, like The Owl House, The Ghost and Molly McGee, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Nature Cat, and Ready Jet Go, don't have their own YouTube channels, but you can still find clips, or full episodes of them on Disney Channel, Peacock Kids, PBS Kids, and more respectively.
    • There's also bunch of anime that really fit for kids, such as Doraemon, Magical Doremi, Pokémon, Digimon, Ultraman, etc.
    • Or, if your family wanted to watch something they want, you could also buy the official (VHS/DVD/Blu-Ray/iTunes/Amazon etc.) releases of the shows or watch on streaming services via subscription (Netflix/Prime Video/Max/Paramount+/Disney+/Peacock) or watch for free (Tubi TV for example).
  3. Click the “Not Interested” button if any of these videos show up on a video that is not related to these cartoons.
  4. If these videos keep appearing in the related videos section, go to your watch history and remove the Cocomelon Videos from your history by hovering over the video and clicking on the X button.
  5. Leave auto-play turned off on YouTube, as the auto-play feature is incredibly useless because it plays random videos until you turn it off.
  6. If you can, get the safe-vision app. It will ask for your child's age, and it will give a good list of videos for your child to watch. You can even go to parent mode, to select some good videos, that are blocked to be unblocked.
  7. Inspect element can help as well, as it can remove these videos from recommended, but please note that it isn't permanent.
  8. If possible, download the YouTube Go app. You can save approved videos and watch them offline. However, if you have an iPhone, then you can't get the app, as it's not available on iOS yet. However as of 2024, the YouTube Go app does no longer function anymore.
  9. If you don't have cable or satellite television, but have YouTube, and your kids want to watch cartoons, try finding some DVDs and/or Blu-Rays, if you have a DVD or a Blu-Ray player, at retailers such as Walmart, Target, Best Buy, or any store, that stocks cartoon DVDs, or Blu-Rays. If you can't find any, then you can find some on online stores, like eBay (beware of scalpers and scammers though) or mostly on Amazon for example.
  10. If you want, find children's videos on YouTube, but the ones that want to teach something to children, that they can give them something productive and useful for their life, and if it can be something beyond the colors, such as alphabet, math, multiplication tables, animals, shapes, or even a foreign language as well, such as Spanish.
  11. People without cable or satellite can tune in to their local PBS Kids 24/7 station, or other equivalents if they're not from the USA for their little kids.
