Doraemon 2: Animal Wakusei Densetsu is an Action game, developed by Agenda and published by Epoch, which was released in Japan in 1992.

Plot

The story is basically faithful to the film, but some arrangements have been made, such as the addition of environmental destruction robot enemies on the Nimuge side and some developments being significantly changed. The game begins with a space lifeboat crashing on Animal Planet, and the objective is to search for friends and tools.

Why It Rocks

  1. The game is an improvement over Taiketsu Himitsu Dogu!! (despite being decent), since the game is more lika a platform game and despite that, there's still shooter stages, which are still pretty good and even better than before.
  2. Good controls to work with, the controls are very tight responsive and while they are a little clunky for the jump, they still are good and is designed with it, so even if you aren't that great of a player, you will never had trouble to play this game at all, much like the other Doraemon games with great controls that are tight and responsive.
  3. Really good graphics that are even better than the first game and is arguably better than the other Doraemon games graphics on GB, since it is pretty detailled for a Game Boy game and the sprites are just as awesome as it was in the first game, the backgrounds are easily the absolute best part of the graphics since they are incredibly well detailled for a Game Boy game and almost look like they came from a NES game, especially in the forest levels, making the graphics of this game not only awesome but also impressive for a Game Boy game.
    • The facial graphics of the characters displayed during conversation scenes are great and even look the anime itself, with a wide range of expressions.
      • In addition, stills from various events are also included, faithfully recreating the atmosphere of the film. Locations that appeared in the film, such as Chippo Town, are recreated in an RPG style, providing a great sense of immersion.
  4. Awesome soundtrack, most of which almost sound like they come from an Infogrames title, since here the soundtrack is extremely catchy, impressive and give a good atmosphere for the game levels, such exemples are the map musics, the Forest level or even the title screen theme that all sound great, in fact the soundtrack is so good that there isn't any bad musics at all, and it is pretty memorable unlike Taiketsu Himitsu Dogu!! (which had decent soundtrack but is pretty bland and forgettable).
    • There is background music that perfectly suits each scene as stated before, such as a ruined city, a fast-paced shooting stage, a misty forest, and the eerie yet hot home planet of Nimuge, and the tones are all very beautiful.
      • If you use the hidden item "Mini Karaoke Set" , you can listen to the sound test to your heart's content, which is cool and that wasn't even present in the first game.
  5. There is even a hidden element in which if you play the sound of defeating a boss on the "mini karaoke set," all the enemies on the field will be annihilated . Gian's singing voice was still alive and well made on the Game Boy, which is impressive.
  6. The story is good and changes some of the thing found in the movie this game adapt from.
    • The newly added Nimuge robot has a theme that calls attention to environmental destruction such as "hedrons" and "freon," and has a message that matches the image of the Doraemon feature films.
    • Not only are the "ancient documents" and "lucky moon" that appeared in the original work key items, but the "sleeping flute" that was mentioned meaningfully in the myth but never appeared in the end also appears as an item, making it a well made adapted adaptation of the original.
  7. There's bonus stages much like the first one but here they are way better because they had weapons and even extra lifes, some stages is also room for 1-UPs, which is cool.
  8. There are also plenty of game genres combined in this game, including terrain that acts as a catapult, falling and sliding floors, a side-scrolling shooter, bonus areas and hidden 1UPs, which make this game never repetitive at all, which is pretty much why this game is awesome and is shockingly one of the better Doraemon game on 8-bit console, if not the best 8-bit Doraemon game.
  9. Great boss fights that are a big improvement over the ones from the previous game, since here they are more challenging and are pretty unique, also one of the weapon deal more damages to them than another, and some of them doesn't do that much damages to them to the point of being impossible to kill them, making you had to choose for the better weapon, which is pretty cool.
  10. Extremely fun gameplay that is like the first game but in platforming and a hybrid of platformer, adventure and shoot 'em up, the real reason of why this game gameplay is awesome though is because of the action stages that are extremely fun especially with great weapons, and the platforming sections are very good too, in fact it is almost Doraemon combined with Mega Man gameplay, which doesn't sound like a bad idea at all and instead is an excellent idea, and would later be that style of gameplay for the SNES games (albeit not that much because they are mostly Mario clones for the platforming).
  11. Balanced difficulty, not too hard nor too easy, at least for most of the time.
  12. Good level design, filled with so many unique levels and levels that are well balanced, it is well balanced in the sense that there is platforming and action at the same time.
    • Many of the enemies and traps are easy to avoid, but because they are one-hit kills, you can play with a moderate sense of tension.
    • As mentioned in the game's features, there are many weapons and items, and there are many clever ideas throughout to keep you from getting bored.
  13. This game feel like an alpha version of the SNES games and in a good way, especially because of the fact that there's a map where you choose levels although it is more simple, and this is released before the first SNES Doraemon game, which might indicate that this game inspired the SNES games formula.
  14. Along with Doraemon: Taiketsu Himitsu Dogu!!, this is one of the only good Doraemon game on Game Boy since the other are either mediocre (Doraemon Kart) or are just plain horrible (Doraemon no Game Boy de Asobouyo: Deluxe 10 being the worst offender and same goes for the Study Boy series).

Bad Qualities

  1. However, in this film, the federal police do not appear, and Doraemon and his friends succeed in fending off Nimuge's all-out attack on their own . After listening to Nimuge's side of things, they discuss the matter with the people of Animal Planet, and after modifying the environmental destruction robots that appeared in this film to their original roles in reverse, they make peace with the animals, and start afresh by cleaning up their home planet, resulting in a happy ending.
    • Nimuge's side also explains that it is true that they committed the evil act of aggression, but it is also not hard to sympathize with them, as they were "forced to live a miserable life as a way of paying the price for their arrogant ancestors" and were driven to a corner. The story includes developments that were not in the original, such as their reform and salvation, as well as their reconciliation with Animal Planet, and they are saved, unlike in the original, where they were arrested without a say in the matter by the federal police and ended up as mere villains.
    • In addition, the enemy environmental destruction robots are remodeled for environmental conservation and the reconstruction of the city, conveying the message that "tools depend on the person who uses them." In addition, the theme of ecology that was discussed in the original work is not lost.
  2. The ending of the story has been changed to something completely different, and while it isn't bad, it is divise to peoples if it is good or if it is bad.
    • First of all, in the original work, the villain Nimuge, who is likened to a "human being who destroys the environment," is portrayed as purely evil, to the point that the original author admitted that "the message may have been too obvious," and this was maintained all the way to the end, but this has been changed in this work.
    • Since this was a controversial part of the animated film, opinions are likely to be divided on whether this change is an improvement or an unnecessary addition.
  3. You still die in only one hit, in which it is a major red flag since some of the levels are quite hard, and chances in the later levels to die are high, it doesn't help that the hit-detection is a little wonky despite being decent enough to not be considered bad and being actually good.
  4. There are some dead ends that can be dead-ends for first-time players, such as when the screen scrolls all the way to the end in a shooting stage.
  5. Pencil missiles are hard to use. After firing, you can control the missile with the D-pad, but since you move with the missile, it's easy to screw up and die.
  6. When retrying a level after you die, you have to re-enter the stage (which also involves conversations), which slows down the pace, and is a bit tedious, although this was also a problem in the first game too.
  7. The screen constantly flickers on the underwater surface, which hurts the eyes and feel like it wasn't finished to be programmed.

Reception

The game received positive reviews by critics and especially players, who consider this game to be an improvement over the first Game Boy.

Trivia

  • The game was developed by a completely different studio compared to the first, which lead to the game being more of a platformer and less of a shooter compared to its predecessor (though there are sidescrolling shooter stages here and there).
