"Fairly OddPet" is the first episode in the ninth season of The Fairly OddParents and the introduction to the new character, Sparky.

Plot

When Timmy realizes that everyone in Dimmsdale has a pet except for him, he adopts Sparky, a mischievous fairy dog. But owning a fairy dog proves to be a much bigger challenge than Timmy could have ever predicted.

Why It's A Pet Peeve

  1. For starters, this episode completely contradicts the events of the episode "That's Life!" from the third season, as Timmy is shown to have previously killed all his past pets, which is not true. It also comes off as a "joke", what with Cosmo and Chet Ubetcha trying too hard to be funny about it.
  2. This episode feels like a poor rehash of the special "Fairly Odd Baby" from the sixth season. For example, in that episode, Cosmo and Wanda wanted to have a baby simply because everyone has one. Here, it's the same thing with Timmy wanting to have a dog just because everyone else has one. Another thing is that Sparky and Poof are also similar in that they don't really contribute much to the series since Sparky is just a dog and Poof is just a baby. Not helping matters is that they both unintentionally caused trouble around town until it was resolved at the end of their respective debut episodes.
  3. Timmy immaturely wishes that the entire Turner household was full of cats so that his allergic mother can get exposed to them and for both her and his father to change their minds as a result.
  4. Mr. Turner idiotically doesn't recognize his own wife, who caught an allergic reaction from the cats surrounding her as a result of Timmy's aforementioned wish that caused her to swell up, and has her alongside all the cats kicked out by Sparky, despite Mrs. Turner doing nothing wrong.
  5. Plot holes:
    • Why couldn’t Timmy just wish for his parents to agree in getting him a pet?
    • Jorgen states that Sparky has been brought back to the pet store various times over the years. Sparky later backs this up by showing off many of his previous owners, who appear to be adults instead of (miserable) children, and yet adults (and non-miserable children) are not supposed to know about fairies.
    • Why would Jorgen work in Fairy World's pet store (and the mall) if he is the leader and enforcer in all of Fairy World?
    • Since when did fairies need jobs and money?
    • When Sparky buried the house while Timmy was asleep, Timmy wishes it back up and Cosmo, Wanda, and Poof can be seen with their wands in this scene. However, in the later scene where the magic fleas are biting people and Timmy wishes them back to normal, Wanda mentions that they can't because Sparky buried the wands, but they just had their wands and granted a wish earlier when Sparky had already buried things. At the very end of the episode, for the sake of plot contrivance, Cosmo, Wanda, and Poof’s wands suddenly appear in the water.
    • When Timmy and Sparky were on the crop duster plane that Mr. Turner invented, Sparky takes the only parachute that is left on the plane and hops off with it, leaving Timmy behind and causing the plane to crash, nearly killing Timmy, who ends up landing on a pool. Sparky is a magical fairy dog, why would he need a parachute?
    • How did Dimmsdale’s Dam appear right near Timmy’s house?
  6. All of the running gags get old quickly.
  7. Timmy contradicts himself. He says that he should finally give up Sparky due to his dangerous results, but after he watches a short clip of himself and Sparky in past times, Timmy starts feeling bad and says that he should not have been so hard on Sparky because he was "just being a dog" despite all he's done, which is a bad moral lesson to kids.
  8. Predictable ending.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Very good animation that is a step-up from previous seasons, despite lacking of Dave Thomas's face expressions. It looks cleaner and the visuals are more smooth.
  2. The episode suceeds at getting you to feel sorry for Mrs. Turner of all characters.
  3. There are some moments that can be funny such as Sparky trying to do a song until get hit by water.

Reception

It currently has a 4.1/10 on IMDb.

Trivia

  • This is the first Fairly OddParents episode to be in widescreen for the first time since "Wishology!".
