"Farfour Is Caught Speaking English" (Arabic: تم القبض على فرفور وهو يتحدث الإنجليزية) is the first episode from the first season of the infamous Palestinian-Hamas "children's program" Tomorrow's Pioneers.
Plot
Farfour and Saraa discuss martyrdom and the reclamation of Al-Aqsa with Sanabel, a call-in guest. Farfour and Saraa then speak with Hadil, another call-in guest, to whom Saraa explains that "the day Islam rules the world there will be justice, love, and peace, and all the people will love one another. That is history." She then discusses the goals of fasting, praying, reciting the Koran, and studying and speaking in classic Arabic. Later on in the episode, Farfour is caught speaking English by Uncle Hazim and is chastised. Saraa explains to Farfour that he must have pride in his Arabic language and that the Moslem culture is a dominant force in the world. Farfour tells Saraa of his intention to, "[set the] cornerstone for world leadership under Islamic leadership" with "our beloved children" and Saraa responds that the show shall act as a "nucleus" for the reunification of Gaza, Jerusalem, and Ramallah into one Palestine. Farfour also teaches about the importance of prayer. Later on he states, "Yes, we, tomorrow's pioneers, will restore to this nation its glory, and we will liberate Al-Aqsa, with Allah's will, and we will liberate Iraq, with Allah's will, and we will liberate the Muslim countries, invaded by murderers." Uncle Hazim speaks of the murders of children and clarifies, "not just the Palestinian child, but also the Iraqi child, as you can see they kill and slaughter the children and the women. Whoever followed the news yesterday could see the fetus and its mother... I'm sure you saw that, Saraa." Saraa acknowledges that she had and that it was very moving. Uncle Hazim continues "they are doing it in Iraq, in Afghanistan, and in Palestine and a while ago they were doing it in Lebanon."
Why It Was Caught Speaking English
- The episode's most controversial aspect is Farfour being punished not for any support of the Israelis, but for simply speaking English.
- Saraa and Hazim explicitly labeled speaking English as "terrorist talk," despite the fact that many Palestinians are proficient in speaking the English language.
- The episode displays xenophobia towards Americans, British, Jews, Mexicans, and other English-speaking communities.
- One major example is Farfour‘s attitude, of which is already unlikeable and not only that racist to those who speak English or for those who have English as their second language.
- Very generic and weak plot.
- The scene depicting Farfour's torture is shockingly violent and disturbing. While his character is portrayed as a terrorist, in this instance, he is punished unjustly.
- This episode is pretty much a Hamas recruitment episode.
- Like the show itself, it's propaganda at its purest.
- Even Walt Disney's last surviving child, Diane Disney Miller, hated the episode much like the entire show in general.
- This episode set a negative tone for the series, starting an already controversial show on an extremely low note.
- Overall, this episode is ultimately insulting to people who speak English by calling them enemies of the world.
Trivia
- The episode would later spawn memes of it.
