Final Fantasy V is a medieval-fantasy role-playing video game developed and published by Square(now Square Enix) in 1992 as a part of the Final Fantasy series.
The game first appeared only in Japan on Nintendo's Super Famicom (known internationally as the Super Nintendo Entertainment System). It has been ported with minor differences to Sony's PlayStation and Nintendo's Game Boy Advance.
Plot
The game begins as a wanderer named Bartz investigates a fallen meteor. There, he encounters several characters, one of whom reveals the danger facing the four Crystals that control the world's elements.
These Crystals act as a seal on Exdeath, a demonic warlock born from a tree given sentient life after being used to seal away countless evil spirits. Bartz and his party must keep the Crystals from being exploited by Exdeath's influence and prevent his resurgence.
Why It Rocks
- Gilgamesh, one of the most famous and hilarious villain in the series made his first appearance.
- Job class system which made its debut in Final Fantasy III now returns now with more enchantments (see WIR #3).
- Jobs can be mixed to form all new different job combinations!, for example: a warrior with white and or black magic, a dragoon with blue magic, a white mage with warrior abilities, a black mage-monk, etc.
- The villain Exdeath, one of the most threatening villains in the series.
- Travel to different worlds as the plot advances.
- Good soundtrack which is normal for a Final Fantasy game.
- Interesting characters, especially Bartz, Faris, Lenna and Krile.
- One of the best, most epic and hardest final boss battles in the series.
- Unlike the previous Final Fantasy games, You don't save the elemental crystals.
- Some funny moments such as Galuf and Bartz being attracted to Faris after they discovered that she is a woman.
Bad Qualities
- The magic now is casted instantly instead of charging before being casted like the other Final Fantasy games with the ATB system which makes the game less strategic.
- The Steam and Android ports have terrible sprites and HUD.
Reception
Final Fantasy V has been praised for the freedom of customization that the player has over the characters, achieved through the greatly expanded Job System.
Despite being released only in Japan, the Super Famicom version sold more than two million copies. The PlayStation version has earned "Greatest Hits" status, selling more than 350,000 copies.
Trivia
- Exdeath is very similar to the Biblical demon known as Legion as both are entities created from countless evil spirits.
- In the japanese version Bartz was named Buttz. It was changed to Bartz due to his name sounding very similar to butt
