Final Fantasy VI (Final Fantasy III in its North American release) is the sixth mainstream Final Fantasy game in the franchise. It was originally released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1994 and subsequently ported to the PlayStation in the Final Fantasy Anthology compilation and the Game Boy Advance and mobile devices. It was both developed and published by Square.

Plot

1,000 years after the War of the Magi nearly destroyed the world, the Gestahl Empire seeks to combine magic and science to conquer the world. A team of heroes must now stop the Empire and its general Kefka Palazzo, from reenacting this ancient war before history repeats itself.

Why It's Full of Life, Dreams, & Hope

  1. The main villain, Kefka Palazzo, is considered one of the greatest and most evil villains in video game history, taking sadistic pleasure in poisoning the kingdom of Doma, betraying Emperor Gestahl, and causing the very destruction of the world and becoming a god and staying in power for a full year before his defeat. In addition, there's also his iconic laugh.
  2. Amazing storyline.
  3. Fourteen playable characters, the largest of any Final Fantasy game. Three of the characters are well hidden.
  4. Some likable characters such as Terra, Celes, Locke, Cyan, Edgar, Sabin.
    • Even if he is an optional character in the first part of the game, Shadow is brilliantly well written.
  5. As the game advances, the heroes obtain Magicite, the remains of an Esper, which act as the summons. Equipping the heroes with Magicite also allow them to slowly learn their magic abilities by obtaining Magic Acquisition Points through battles.
  6. Equipping some Espers also add permanent stat bonuses with each level up.
  7. Two major worlds, the World of Balance and the World of Ruin.
  8. Awesome music, courtesy of Nobuo Uematsu.
  9. No true main character. Each character has their own reasons for fighting the Empire and Kefka.  Despite this, fans consider Terra Branford the main character due to her being in artwork and the representative of VI in Dissidia: Final Fantasy and Celes because she has more prominent role in World of Ruins.
  10. Dancing Mad, which plays during the final battle with Kefka, is the longest piece of music in all of Final Fantasy. It is over 17 minutes long. It's popularity is rivaled only by One Winged Angel in Final Fantasy 7.
  11. This game is notable for one of the longest ending ever next to Final Fantasy 7 and 8 endings.
  12. The World of Ruin has Celes trying to reunite with her friends for the final battle with Kefka. Not every character needs to be obtained, but the good ending requires them all.
  13. Features many useful Relics, such as Sprint Shoes which speeds up your character, Ribbon which cancels bad status aliments, Running Shoes which can cast automatic haste in battle, Genji Glove which allows your player to equip 2 weapons, Reflect Ring which can reflect magic attacks and the Moogle Charm prevents random battles allowing you to explore dungeons.

Bad Qualities

  1. Mog, Gogo, Umaro and Gau have no personalities, Though It is excusable as it is the first time that a final fantasy game has more complex characters
    • Despite being a prominent character, Edgar has no character development whatsoever.
    • Strago and Relm only exist for Shadow's backstory.
    • Shadow (while a good character as mentioned in WIR #5) is very underutilized as he stays permanently only for the Floating Continent quest which is the last quest in World of Balance and if you don't wait him at the end of that quest he will die and be unavailable for the majority of the game.
  2. Some of the playable characters are completely useless or just have better alternatives .
    • Umaro is uncontrollable and cannot equip armor nor weapons.
    • Setzer's slot ability is awful as it is completely RNG based and most of the time he does a very pathetic move that "heals" your party for only 20 HP. His awful stats and limited weapons that he equips doesn't make him any better.
    • Gau goes completely berserk when he uses enemy attacks and he is completely overshadowed by Strago's more reliable blue magic attacks and Relm's sketch.
      • To make matters worse Gau does not equip any weapons.
    • Strago and Relm have awful stats and they are introduced way too late. To make matters worse Terra and Celes are better spell casters and they were introduced from the beginning of the game.
    • Cyan's ability takes a lot of time to charge, although he deals massive damage to enemies. Thankfully the Steam and Mobile ports allows you to control the other characters while he charges.
    • Gogo has the lowest stats of all the playable characters.
  3. Final Fantasy VI has the most problematic ports in the series.
    • The SNES has terrible translation which often ruins the characters' personalities, is heavily censored and is extremely buggy.
      • For example, there's a bug that makes your attacks 100% accurate even if you have the darkness status.
    • The PlayStation Anthology version also has a terrible translation in addition to long loading times and lower quality music, which is inexcusable as the PlayStation is more advanced than the SNES.
    • The GBA port has very terrible music and very oversaturated colors.
    • The Steam and Mobile ports have awful sprites, animations and an unappealing HUD.
    • The Pixel Remaster, which fixes the PlayStation and Steam/Android ports' issues (as well as replacing the latter), lacks the bonus content found in the GBA version.
  4. If you use Relm's sketch ability on an invisible enemy or it just fails, it will glitch the game.
  5. The final boss battle with Kefka and the Tower of Gods (though epic) is extremely easy if you have party members with Curaga (or Cure 3) and/or the Paladin Shield. In general, because of the overpowered abilities, items, spells and summons your characters will have by now, the battle will become a cakewalk.
  6. The game, along with Final Fantasy V, sadly never got a DS or even a 3DS remake like III and IV did, instead receiving the Steam and Android ports.

Reception

Final Fantasy VI received widespread critical acclaim, particularly for its graphics, soundtrack, story, characters, setting, and mature themes, and won numerous awards. It is widely considered to be one of the greatest video games ever made, and is often cited as a watershed title for the role-playing genre. The game was a commercial success, with the SNES and PlayStation versions selling over 3.48 million copies worldwide by 2003, as well as over 750,000 copies as part of the Japanese Final Fantasy Collection and the North American Final Fantasy Anthology.

Game Tips

  • To use Blitz techniques, you need to input the commands while the cursor is pointing towards Sabin. This can be hard to figure out as the game doesn't explain it clearly enough.
  • Play with all the playable characters as in some parts you control 2 or 3 parties

Trivia

  • At the time of its release in the U.S. Final Fantasy II, III, and V had not been released so it was renamed Final Fantasy III for U.S. audiences. II, III, and V would be released to the U.S. years later.
  • The main villain of the game, Kefka, is similar to the DC Comics supercriminal, the Joker. Both are evil clowns, both are pure evil (actually depends on the adaption of the Joker), both are completely insane, and both cause chaos for the sake of chaos. The only difference is that Kefka has magic powers and the Joker does not (though the Joker did temporarily become a god by absorbing Mister Mxyzptlk and becoming Emperor Joker).
  • One enemy in the Kingdom Hearts Union X is visually inspired by Kefka.
  • The original name for Terra was Tina, It changed to Terra because the Developers thought Terra sounds more exotic.
  • It was confirmed by an interview with the developers that Shadow is Relm's Father.
