Freaktown is a Canadian animated television series that was created by Peter Ricq and Philippe Ivanusic-Vallée. It premiered on Teletoon on June 20, 2016, and ended on October 9 of the same year it premiered. The series aired on Disney XD in Asia and Cartoon Network in Australia and New Zealand.

Plot

An undead skeleton named Ben Bones along with his two best friends named Lenny and Priscilla have to protect Freaktown to make sure Sweetlandia doesn't destroy the place and turn it into a place full of sweets, fluff and fairies.

Why It's Too Freaky And Should Be Destroyed by Sweetlandia

  1. It has excessive toilet humor and gross out humor (for instance, Lenny briefly farts during the theme song and Taylor is seen peeing in the episode "Tinkle Taylor, Soldier Spy"). In fact, most of the gross out humor can go out too far to the point where it feels more like an adult show than a kids' show.
  2. The theme song is poorly done and very disgusting. The rest of the show's soundtrack doesn't fare any better.
  3. Bland and hammy voice acting, especially from Cory Doran as Lenny.
  4. There are lots of unfunny jokes and terrible lingo.
  5. Incredibly cheap flash animation that actually looks worse than other Canadian cartoons like Numb Chucks, Rocket Monkeys, and Scaredy Squirrel. It doesn't help that it was provided by PiP Animation Services, who also animated other shows like Doki and Wandering Wenda (and they did a far better job at doing the animation for both shows compared to this show).
  6. Most of the characters are either unfunny, unlikable, and dreadful, including Ben Bones and Lenny. On that note, a few of them (such as Wereshark and the Fluffies) are bland and dull to the exact point they don't have a clear personality.
  7. The action scenes are unpleasantly boring and unenjoyable to watch even less than one minute.
  8. The character designs and title cards are lazy looking.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. The premise of ugly designed monsters battling magical fairies and sweets is creative and pretty interesting, though it is executed poorly.
  2. Some of the characters look creative and expressive.
  3. There are a few good or decent episodes.

Reception

Freaktown was met with mixed reviews. It currently holds a 4/10 rating on IMDb.

Trivia

  • After airing the show on Mondays during the Summer of 2016, Teletoon suddenly aired multiple episodes of the show on the last Saturday of August before going on hiatus. The rest of the show's only season was dumped into a Saturday afternoon slot in October 2016, appropriately enough, with the last ten episodes being aired on a lone Sunday afternoon.
